Wasn't just the last two it was all four

    Corduroy
    Animal
    Gonna See My Friend
    Why Go

I like the slow ones personally ...

  • I prefer the slow ones, too.

    Release
    Long Road
    Hard to Imagine
    Oceans (yet to see live)
    One man stands alone awaiting
    for her to come home
    eyes upon the horizon
    in the dark before the
    darkness leaves the dawn
  • When I saw them for my first and only time in '08, they opened with Oceans.

had a bit of a false start, but it was great nonetheless. Release seems like an amazing opener to me also.
  • I thought I like the slow ones like Release, Of the Girl, etc. but when they opened the Spectrum on the 27th with Corduroy, I changed my mind.

Nothing like screaming, "The waiting drove me mad" with the crowd, because the waiting did drive me mad!! :D
I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club.
  • Seen Release in Pittsburgh a few years back as an opener, best one I have seen in 9 shows.

Release from the Atlanta '94 show still gives me chills. . . though I do like a rockin' opener as well. I suppose that when it comes to PJ I just don't really give a damn as long as I'm at the show!

I've only seen 12 shows but I've seen 6 slow openers and 6 fast openers. I have to say that, despite my first ever PJ show opening with Animal in 93, I prefer the slower ones to open. My top 3 that I've seen are:

    Sometimes (Shepherd's Bush)
    All or None (The Vic)
    Hard To Imagine (MSG 1)
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

Ive only been to 3 shows but Ive heard Wash, Cant Keep, and Animal as openers. Wash I think is easily the best slow opener since it is still a heavy song at the same time.

But after hearing ANIMAL as a fuckin opener at philly I have to say that song tears the other 2 to shreds as far as openers go. Animal is probably in my top 5 PJ songs and that song got me SOOOOOOOOOO pumped when they just broke right into it.

  • Can I go with Release into Corduroy? But Release or Oceans would get my votes.

I've been to 3 shows and the openers were:

    Go
    Hard to Imagine
    Long Road

While I prefer a slow opener, the next 5-6 songs should be rockers.

    For instance:

    Release
    Breakerfall
    Hail Hail
    Why Go
    Save You
    Dissident
    Got Some

Then the 1st encore can be all acoustic to even it out.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

    8/5/16 Fenway, 8/7/16 Fenway
EV Solo: 6/16/11 Boston, 6/18/11 Hartford,
  • My vote also goes to the slow ones to start with Release and Long Road as my two favorites. That said, when they opened with In My Tree (semi slow) that was awesome.

I was HUGE on fast openers, especially Corduroy, for a long, long time . . . . I'm becoming more partial to slower openers now, especially if they are immediately followed by Corduroy with little to no pause in between the songs . . . that to me is a great opening.

Like in Toronto this past summer . . . Of the Girl straight into Corduroy. Was a pretty awesome start to the show.

I think any slow song followed by Corduroy is the perfect opening now.

Here are the openers I've seen:

    Release
    Severed Hand
    Hard To Imagine
    Wash
    Long Road
    Sometimes

Slower is my preference. Long Road is a personal favorite, but I must say that Release, Wash and Hard To Imagine are all fantastic openers. Severed Hand not so much. Sometimes was good, better than Severed, but not on the level of the others.

  • I guess I'm in the minority since I enjoy openers like Breakerfall or Go. Something to just take your face off from the opening note.

Definitely slow. More emotional, more intense. Gives you a chance to take everything in, the band, the fans, the atmosphere, and brace yourself for whats about to come. I almost feel cheated when they start off with a rocker cause the only time they play songs like release or long road or oceans or hard to imagine is to open, so if they start off with a fast song you know theres no chance of hearing 1 of those songs.
  • Been to over 2 dozen shows and Ive only had a fast opener 3x. Twice was in Philly last month. Got to say a slow opener is the way to go. Gets you settled in and a nice way to begin what will be a long set. When they come out everyone is going crazy and its cool to soak in th atmosphere with a slow opener. Favs (besides the obvious classic opening of Release) are Wash and Sometimes. "sometimes I reach to myself . . . " awesome. Heard Oceans once in '98 and that was special too.

    Release
    Long Road
    Corduroy
    Oceans
    Love Boat Captain
    Wasted Reprise (x2)
    Wash
    Of The Girl
    Why Go

11 Shows, 10 different openers. Of those my top three would be Release, Oceans and LBC. I tend to prefer slower openers as a way to ease into a show, but hearing something like RVM open a show at this point would be really cool and out of left field. Breakerfall always seemed like a great opener to me as well.

Shows I've been to have opened with:

    Of the girl x2
    Can't keep
    Alive
    Long Road x3
    Release
    Severed Hand
    Small Town
    Betterman
    Oceans
    Sometimes x 2
    Why Go
    Last Exit

Long Road is definitely my favorite opener so I've been lucky. Release would probably be my next pick. For fast openers, nothing has been better than Why go and Alive for me.

  • Has to be a slow opener. Eases you in, makes you feel like your being introduced to the show, and makes the kick-off of the next song all the more dramatic.

whereas with fast openers - they're going to get to those songs anyway, so it just feels like you're coming in in the middle of things, or like they've skipped something.

  • I thought Sometimes was a really cool opener in seattle, i just love no code.
A fast opener like Corduroy would be cool too, tho it works great as a second song to get the crowd rockin.
