Completely blown away last night...and it wasn't by PJ

After my recent 5 PJ shows in a month run in August/October, I was seriously having a hard time getting back into concert mode. I went to a few shows after the last PJ LA show and found myself really struggling to get into the music; it seemed like after the Pearl Jam run, other shows just couldn't cut it anymore.
Then I went to see a bloke named David Gray last night and I got the old feeling back. Now, fuck it, I know a lot of people on here will probably knock him since his music is worlds away from Pearl Jam, but I don't give a shit -- the man is an amazing performer and has the voice of a god. Even though the crowd mostly sucked last night, it was wonderful getting those old goosebumps back at a show based solely on the emotion and power of the performance. I don't usually gush over a performance unless it completely blows me away, but this one did.
Anyway, just wanted to share for those of you going through post-PJ depression mode. There is hope.
And here's a clip of the dude I am talking about in case anyone else wants to be blown away.
(It's not from last night's show since videos haven't surfaced yet, but it's my favorite song of his new album. Especially the end of the song.)

Love "Be Mine." Definitely a song I will have played at my wedding. It's gorgeous.

He didnt sign it with a New Jersey with accent , some people (ie, people who arent american) can like that about a Bruce cover.
even better, this cover is pretty spot on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEoeYoFc-VU David Gray & Damien Rice - Que Sara (Live Earth 2007). Wembley stadium, first act of the day, a fantastic & controversial singalong for a gig about global warming ("Whatever will be, will be!")
Also, at Live Earth:

Haha, I like what you did there.
But actually, no, I didn't just find out about him. I first saw him back in 2000 (or 2001?), and this was my fifth show of his. But it had been a few years, so it was nice to be mesmerized all over again.Everything has chains...Absolutely nothing's changed. - PJ

Geez I love that song. Some of his greatest work is his lesser-known stuff! (Lost Songs in particular has a ton of gems.)
The guy is definitely a poet. Lyrically, Life in Slow Motion (the album, not the song) is probably my favorite album of all-time (and definitely ranks in my top-10 period).
He played "Ain't No Love" last night and it really hit me how beautiful that song is, particularly this part:
On winter trees the fruit of rain
Is hanging trembling in the branches
Like a thousand diamond buds
Waiting there in every pause
That old familiar fear that claws you
Tells you nothing ain't no good
Pulling back you see it all
Down here so laughable and small
Hardly a quiver in the dirt
This ain't no love that's guiding me.
Oh, and on the new album, "Kathleen":
Cars they sound like waves that are breaking
On some distant shore
I gazed so hard into the great aching sky
It seemed that I, I wasn't here no more
That my rushing blood was a river
My eyes two stars
My blowing hair all a quiver
A whispering field of grass
That murmurs as you pass
Oh my darlin Kathleen
That whispers out your name
Oh my darlin KathleenEverything has chains...Absolutely nothing's changed. - PJ

I wish he would 'sail away'
Preferably over Niagra Falls.
David Gray is one of the musicians that people have playing in the background at dinner parties. People who listen to David Gray drive MPV's or big, off road vehicles when there's only two of them and the husband wears leather driving gloves and drapes the sleeves of his Lyle and Scott sweater over his shoulder and ties them in a knot on his chest. During the concerts they go to watch, the Wife constantly updates her friends on twitter about "how marvellous" the evening is.
Fuck. That.It's gonna be a glorious day...0 -
