Jon Theodore, formerly of The Mars Volta, is the best drummer I have ever seen live. I think Danny Carey's great, but I think Theodore is actually much better. Just my take.
Thomas Pridgen currently In TMV is excellent also!
Currently: both drummers for The Dirtbombs, Arctic Monkeys drummer, Dave Grohl, I've always liked Lars, Vinnie Paul, Mike Portnoy (dream Theater), neil peart, the guy from def leppard (Hell if anyone can drum with one arm he gets my vote)

i'm just gonna chime in with two words: Neil Peart!
Edit: Just realized I read the OP wrong...missed the part about being exposed to new artists/drummers :-) I just jumped in with one of the best drummers I know of! oh well..
Nobody before or since had the power, swing and feel that Bonzo had. The minute you hear one of his drum parts, you know it couldnt be anyone only John Bonham. That says it all really
"...though my problems are meaningless....that don't make them go away...."

This thread is gonna keep me occupied for a while ... lotsa drummers here that i need to check out. I like Matt Cameron & Dave Grohl a lot, but IMHO, ALL drummers pale in comparison with Keith Moon when he was in his prime. Not even close.
Wrigley Field (Chicago) 7/19/13, Pacific Coliseum (Vancouver) 9/25/11, ScottTrade Center (St. Louis) 5/4/10, Sprint Center (KC) 5/3/10, Wachovia Spectrum Arena (Philadelphia) - 10/31/09, Key Arena (Seattle) - 9/22/09, Key Arena (Seattle) - 9/21/09, United Center (Chicago) - 8/24/09, United Center (Chicago) - 8/23/09, Colonial Center (Columbia, SC) - 6/16/08, The Vic Theatre (Chicago) - 8/02/07, Pepsi Center (Denver) - 7/02/06
Actually come to think of it, I just might be a puddle full of detriment.

Bill Ward.
Word. Bill Ward did, and I'm sure still does have some chops. Listen to any live Sabbath from the 70's and Ward will just rock the house. His drumming on all of Sabbath's first 8 albums was awesome.

It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
Hands down DANY CAREY, this is a no brainer. Go c TOOL live and then comment. Strike that, dnt c tool cuz I dnt want them to turn out like pj and have millions of tools following them- but dany is the best!!!!

I suggest you step out on your Porch.
Run away my son. See it all. Oh, See the World!
While others may be better on technicalities (like Danny Carey whom I very much enjoy) Keith Moon was like an amazing abstract painter, and his style can never be repeated. Truly one of a kind, and he was the backbone of The Who. The Who never did get their sound back when he died.

I really love Bryan Devendorf, the drummer for The National. He may not be as skilled as the drummers mentioned here, but he adds so much to each song.
I think the guy from Our Lady Peace used to be really good. I know their work has taken on the same fate as the Titanic, but back when they first started up until 2000 he was awesome. Especially on their first album Naveed. You could really hear his style come through. I remember reading how when they formed they were looking for a drummer and found him at age 18 even though he was a Jazz drummer and not a rock drummer. When Bob Rock (the Metallica producer) produced their album Gravity, he told him to tone down the drumming and for Raine to cool it on the vocals....and that is when OLP died. But, Jeremy Taggert was, I guess still is, and awesome drummer
Good call, man. I remember when their first album came out, I was a big fan. It's too bad they shit the bed rather quickly. I remember how similar the drummer's style was to Matt Cameron's. That album came out almost at the same time that Superunknown came out, and I also remember that the sound production for the drums on both albums was eerily similiar. Another weird factor is that Taggart and Cameron both played drums on Geddy Lee's solo album from the year 2000... Cameron plays on most of the tracks but Taggart is on at least one of them.
While others may be better on technicalities (like Danny Carey whom I very much enjoy) Keith Moon was like an amazing abstract painter, and his style can never be repeated. Truly one of a kind, and he was the backbone of The Who. The Who never did get their sound back when he died.
+1
Zak starky isn't that bad of a drummer. He does moony parts good. The best since moony died.
The dude from DMB just fucking kills on drums. Love his playing style to death.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
Sammi: Wanna just break up?
Ray Luzier is an absolute beast behind the kit, check out that sexy shit he's doing on the cymbals during the choruses Awesome stuff, that ending is pretty damn epic too.
in terms of more current music i think Dave Grohl and Jimmy Chamberlain are the two that stand out for me...but overall i have to agree with Moon and John Bonham.
but that's like, you know, my opinion man.

Besides all of the obvious drummers, I really like the drummer for Arctic Monkeys. He has a very unique style. Also Primus's second drummer Brian Mantia. I think he has alot more groove and style compared to their first drummer. The whole brown album is just pure bonham like grooves. And I always remember that crazy fill during the break in Antipop. He goes around his entire kit two times in a row, it's just this long ass fill that you don't even think is going to end.
I love that fill.
...but Tim edges out Brain in my mind. Brain has a cool, funky yet powerful style. Tim is just a beast with all sorts of crazy rhythms and fills. Check out his fill in Professor Nutbutter.

Chad Smith is a good modern drummer...its all about the groove baby, fuck all the fast and flash shit

about the whole groove part..... I don't care for drummers like neil peart and mike portnoy (especially portnoy).
I really like this guy from Minus The Bear. His playing style is so kickass. (its all about the groove and style)
