Some Amazing Drummers...

A a drummer and musician, I'm always excited when I get exposed to artists I haven't heard of, particularly when they have unique styles, originality, and a diverse ability. Here's a few drummers I've recently become quit enamored with:
Benny Greb - Benny is an incredible drummer from Germany I first discovered a couple of years ago. He's got great chops, but just an insane technique for grooving as well. He performs with a lot of different bands, as well as having a successful career as a teacher, clinician, and solo artist. Here's a clip - good stuff at 3:52

Aaron Spears - Aaron is an R&B drummer from D.C. He has played with Alicia Keys, James Brown, and Usher. I'm not a big R&B or Usher fan at all, but this clip of Aaron performing "Caught Up" at the 2006 Modern Drummer festival is sick!

Jojo Mayer - One of my recent favorites! Originally from Zurich, Switzerland and now residing in New York, Jojo Mayer has been playing with many diverse artists for almost 30 years throughout Europe and the US. More recently, Jojo has been venturing into New York's Techno / Multimedia / Avantgarde / club scene by promoting his own weekly party event called PROHIBITED BEATZ with his first solo project called NERVE. Described as an "endeavor in reverse engineering the textures and rhythms of the current stream of computer generated music into a live performed, improvisational format", NERVE and PROHIBITED BEATZ have created a reputation in the New York scene that already goes way beyond "a serious buzz". Check out this clip with NERVE from the 2005 Modern Drumer Festival:

Only other drummer, modern day drummer I can think of that is consistently mindblowing is Danny Carey
Honorable mention to Patrick Keeler from the Raconteurs as well.
The National? REALLY?! Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and likes/dislikes I suppose...I personally don't find anything great about the drummer from the National, much less the whole band. He's not doing anything I'd say was particularly noteworthy from an experienced drummer's perspective. They're not bad musicians or a bad band per se - there's just so many cookie cutter bands like them coming out of the Northeast recently, with the sports coats and ties, lead singer with the deep "Ian Curtis" voice - I've had it with the whole "indie" thing. It's not "indie" anymore - it's become rather formulaic and predictable. The looks, the sounds, the performance mannerisms...
Danny Carey on the other hand - he's a pretty good drummer. He does tend to get a little repetitive with some of his licks, but he's definitely got chops and stamina.
very good drummer. he always sticks out most to me from that band
Sammi: Wanna just break up?
from the Red Billings and His Five Shillings fame
I am a bit biased though

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.
I love that fill.
...but Tim edges out Brain in my mind. Brain has a cool, funky yet powerful style. Tim is just a beast with all sorts of crazy rhythms and fills. Check out his fill in Professor Nutbutter.

"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
Unique and powerful drummer, and a great personality, but not on the level of some of the monsters.

He really is awesome. Mastodon is perfect too...just keep getting better.
One of my favorite drummers is Steve Gorman. Awesome style, sound, and he's a humble guy.

Also, Tony Williams, Brian Blade, and check out young Eric Slick.

Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead. I've seen him with the Grateful Dead, Particle, and on his own "Planet Drum" tours where he brings drummers from around the world together to play. Never fails to impress with the variety of styles that he can play.

Possibly my favourite though is Jimmy Chamberlin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r2quBWxeWQ - 3 minutes of fucking relentless awesomeness!
I actually think tales from the punchbowl was Tims best album with primus. I don't remember the drumming in Proffessor Nutbutter but I remember towards the end of Over the Electric Grapevine Tim starts playing this awesome rhythm on the floor toms/snare.
