Yeah... you can't watch a whole movie and then expect to get your money back because you didn't like it. That's like eating a whole meal and then expecting to get your money back. Besides, you are paying the theater for the service of showing you the film, so if they successfully showed it then they provided what you paid for. Call the folks who made the movie if you don't like how it was made. I used to manage movie theaters and the few people who expected refunds were so frustrating - and we never gave them refunds anyway (although if they were really nice and had a really good reason for not liking it we might sometimes give them passes).

I have never heard of that, nor has it ever occured to me that someone may ask for the $ back. Do they ever give it back?
When I was 17, I got free passes to a drive-in and one night I had no money to go out and do anything, so a friend and I went and used the passes. Well, we got to talking to the projection guy, he was flirting wih us, and missed his cue to switch to another reel and screwed the whole thing up. They ended up having to give everyone their money back. So, we got our money back and then had money to go out! HaHA! We didn't pay to begin with. We screwed it up. We ended up with money!

I say do you're research before seeing a movie. If all the critics say it sucks but the trailer still looks pretty cool, then I would wait till it came out on On Demand or DVD. Maybe, just maybe, if you came out of the theatre halfway through or before, maybe give them a pass to see another movie for free. But to watch a whole movie and then come back and say, because it sucked, that you want you're money back?? Not acceptable.

    Bottom line: Buyer beware.

Paying money to see Transformers 2, eh ... well, those in the legal community would call that "Assumption of Risk" ... no one to blame but yourself. ;)

dont even ask permission to see another movie... if i pay $10 for a shitty movie then i just sneak into another theater after its over... granted, i have way too much free time on my hands sometimes

really though you should always see more than one movie... its a victimless crime... those projectors are gonna roll regardless... hollywood makes bank even in the worst recessions... anyone else always do the double feature?

Haha!:lol: That's just the one I was thinking of where it was acceptable to give refunds. But that's because the cinematography actually made people physically ill. We had warning signs saying "you might puke" and "no refunds; enter at your own risk" and we handed out barf bags with the tickets. But we still gave out refunds or passes to reasonable people, especially if they left before the movie was over or got puked on by someone else.
  • I worked at a movie theater during my high school and college days. We occasionally had customers ask for a refund due to the movie "sucking". Our theater had a policy for all films that refunds could be given out within the first 30 minutes of the film playing. So if you're 20 minutes in and think, "Man. I don't like this," you could get a refund. On the rare occasions that we did have someone that stuck out the movie and then demanded a refund, our manager would calmly try to explain to them that they should have left earlier. The customer would then try to start a scene, so in an effort to keep the shouting down, our manager would always bow down and just give out a couple free passes.

I can recall one time an Aunt took her two nephews into the Sandler film Big Daddy. She came out about 15 minutes later and asked what the film was rated. When I told her PG-13 she said, " This can't be a PG-13. There must be a misprint on the poster and marquee because so far I have heard the "SH" word a few times and saw a scene where two men kissed. I just wanted to take my nephews to a nice movie."

I could not believe some of the things I heard from customers while working at the theater. It really lead me to believe that some of our customers had never ever been at the movies, or that they were not aware it was the 21st century.

I've only ever walked out of one movie: 'First Knight', a King Arthur movie that I made the mistake of going to in Cork in Ireland.
Although I was also severely tempted to walk out of Pulp Fiction which I thought was a pile of overblown horseshit.

  • I work in an arena box office, and you'd be amazed at the number of refund demands we get after concerts or shows... some are legitimate issue (broken seat, something obstructing view, etc.), but why the hell would you wait until a couple of days after a show to complain.

The first thing I ask, is "did you tell someone about the issue", and the response is usually "no". WTF, you saw an entire concert, may or may not have had a bad seat, but you now want your $100 back?

wow. no offense or anything, but if i was the movie clerk whom you asked a refund for after seeing pulp fiction, i would just make you watch it again and again until you grew to like it.

I think most movie theaters will give refunds within the first 20 minutes if you go in and realize this was not the movie you expected. I think that is reasonable. Beyond that though if you sit through the whole movie and it played fine on the projector and there were no technical issues and you ask for your money back you are a dumbass. I didn't even think any theaters would do that, if they would, I would like my money back for seeing Battlefield Earth 9 years ago.

really though you should always see more than one movie... its a victimless crime... those projectors are gonna roll regardless...

Victimless? Not quite. If you were never going to see a movie in the theater, nor rent it on DVD, nor watch it on tv, then... you have a possibility of being accurate. If you were at some point going to see the movie in the theater, on DVD or on tv, then the movie studios are making less money, and then they are the victim.

Reminds be of something that we did in high school... in one theater, if you went into the lobby restrooms, there was a janitor's closet that opened up on the other side to the restrooms inside the theater hallway.

I would never do that now, but as a poor highschool kid it let me see some movies :)

we just had the freebie double feature arguement in the office the other week.

i do the double feature from time to time. my arguement is, if i would not otherwise pay to watch the movie (theater, dvd, whereever) then i shouldn't feel guilty. The same argument works for snacks. Is it wrong to sneak in a soda to drink if i would otherwise not buy from the theater.

either way, i don't feel guilty about the double feature freebie. some how i don't think hollywood is hurting.

To be more accurate - my mom (who took me) made us leave.

We then asked permission to see another movie and got in to see the Hunt for Red October.
