Respect to you Hitch-Hiker, I love the union too.
Living in Ireland you have some great players to watch and support at this moment. Looks like Ireland are nailed on to win six nations, they are the most exiting team to watch these days.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

How do you guys think Football players and Rugby players would match-up against each other in their respective sports?
Good question, I don't think either would do to well. I don't think rugby players would be able to handle the size and speed of football and I don't think a lot of Football players would be able to handle the constant pounding (depends on position obviously) and sustained fitness levels required for rugby.

I've gone over this over and over again with many, many, friends. And this is coming from an American, a die hard Eagles fan. I am absolutely ADAMANT that rugby players - once they were familiar with the sport of football - would be just as good, if not better, than football players at their respective sport. But NOT the other way around. Sure, football players are big, fast, and strong. But so are the best rugby players in the world. And they do it for 80 nonstop minutes. In American football, there's a stoppage every 45 seconds.
PS - I'm glad you brought this topic up Booomm. Good stuff.

I have to disagree, I don't seem many rugby players that have any shot at running a 4.4, 40. I think the size and speed put together make the difference. Like i said, I dont think football players could play rugby either though.

That begs the question - in what world do rugby players run 40 times? Watch an 8-man or scrum or fly half breeze goal line to goal line.
It doesn't really help the argument, but Dhani Jones in that stupid show he has on Travel Channel went to play rugby in England on like a division 2 team and could barely keep up. Then again, it is Dhani Jones.
Oh, and believe me, there's plenty of rugby players that run a 4.4 40. Again, they just don't get tested on those.
so what's the argument... conditioning? I'm sure the football player could build his stamina. What position would most Rugby players be in the NFL? Linebackers, D-Lineman, maybe a few safties? I think those dudes would get torched! Physically they would probably hang, they're tough guys, but athletically I don't think so.

You gotta watch more games. These dudes have athletic moves out the asshole. They would most likely play any position on defense. On offense they would probably play every position other than quarterback and maybe O-line. And they would of course play kicker and punter. Football players were never built to have the stamina of rugby players, but rugby players have been built to have more than enough physicality and athleticism as any football player. Remember, just because they're not playing football doesn't mean they're not 10x the athlete that football players are. Rugby players get paid the same, if not more, than most NFL players. The NFL is just not relevant in every other country where rugby is played. Hence, they go play rugby instead of football because that's what they were raised around. Our country is very small minded when it comes to sports. We think everyone else is crazy because they don't play our 3 major sports(hockey doesn't count).
With that said, offensive lineman, d-lineman, linebackers, tight ends, could never keep up on a rugby pitch.
They would be able to cover an NFL reciever, or create seperation from a corner? These two athletes( Rugby,Football) are similar, and that's why I brought the question up. I do think both could succeed in the other sport, but IMO the rugby player would have more limitations. Someone needs to make the transition, so we can squash this.
have you ever seen a Canadian football game, it is called the CFL and it is great. we just had the grey Cup on sunday and it was 100 times better than most Super bowl
of and hockey is the only reason i believe in a god and my god names is bobby clarke.
NFL - 49ers
MLB - LA Dodgers
NBA - LA Lakers
NCAA Football & Basketball - Cal
Don't really like hockey.
My favorite sport is whatever sport my team is doing the best in, so right now its the NBA. I've checked out emotionally from the NFL, but I still watch every sunday and Super Bowl Sunday is still the greatest day of the year, but the NBA playoffs are pretty exciting too.
When comparing NFL to Rugby, are you talking about Rugby League or Rugby Union.
Rugby League has more in common with American football and I think the players from RL could make the transition to NFL.

I'd agree with this. I don't know a huge amount about American Football, but from what I've seen I think it would be easier for Rugby players to make the transition to American Football than vice versa. From a fitness and stamina standpoint Rugby players appear to be conditioned better to me, but like I say, I'm not fully informed on the matter.

I think the average Joe Schmoe in the US knows rugby union. Rugby League isn't even remotely as popular here - which in itself says something, that rugby is the #1 growing sport in the US.
