Your Team Of The Decade....Yanks, Sox, Phils, Cards
Being a DIE~HARD Red Sox fan I have to admit after looking at the numbers the Yankees are the team of the decade. :( Above is te order I would place the teams.
BY THE NUMBERS
NYY BOS PHI
Regular season rec. 965-651 920-699 850-769
Regular season winning PCT .597 .568 .525
Avg. wins per season 96.5 92 85
Avg. losses per season 65.1 69.9 77
Division titles 8 1 3
Postseason berths 9 6 3
Postseason record 48-39 34-23 18-8
Posteason winning PCT .551 .596 .692
LCS berths 5 4 2
World Series berths 4 2 2
WS titles 2 2 1
Not only that, but the Yankees averaged 96.5 wins per season. This, to go along with four AL pennants and an overall regular-season winning percentage of .597.
Team of the decade?
Yankees
Year Regular season Postseason
2000 87-74 11-5
2001 95-65 10-7
2002 103-58 1-3
2003 101-61 9-8
2004 101-61 6-5
2005 95-67 2-3
2006 97-65 1-3
2007 94-68 1-3
2008 89-73
2009 103-59 7-2
Total 965-651 48-39
The lowlights - Had American League's fourth-best record in 2008 at 89-73 but missed the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
The payroll - $1.67 billion.
The stat - Closer Mariano Rivera has not had a save opportunity in their last eight postseason games.
The case for - Another championship would strengthen the argument for the Yankees, but to do that they must break the powerful Curse of Alex Rodriguez. Seattle lost all four postseason series in which Rodriguez appeared. Since Rodriguez joined the Yankees in 2004, they are 1-4 in postseason series with a .333 winning percentage for 21 games. Rodriguez has been noticeable for his failures in that span. He has hit .245 with four homers and nine RBIs in 94 at-bats overall and .100 for 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Rodriguez will again carry the burden of having to produce, or watch the Yankees perish.
Red Sox
Year Regular season Postseason
2000 85-77
2001 82-79
2002 93-69
2003 95-67 6-6
2004 98-64 11-3
2005 95-67 0-3
2006 86-76
2007 96-66 11-3
2008 95-67 7-4
2009 95-67 0-3
Total 920-699 35-22
The lowlights - On Aug. 15, 2001, the Red Sox were 65-53 and trailed the Yankees by five games in the AL East and Oakland by one game in the wild-card race. That was not good enough for general manager Dan Duquette. He fired manager Jimy Williams, replacing him with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan. The Red Sox went 17-26 under Kerrigan and missed the playoffs.
The payroll - $1.17 billion.
The stat - In this decade, the Red Sox are 13-3 for postseason games in which a loss would end their season.
The case for - The Red Sox, who had a winning record in every season during the decade, would end all debate on the subject by winning a third World Series championship. That would make Boston the third franchise since the 1960s to win three World Series in a single decade. The others were the Yankees in the 1990s and Oakland in the 1970s. The black mark against the Red Sox is they finished ahead of the Yankees in the regular season only twice during this decade, in 2007 and 2008.
Phillies
Year Regular season Postseason
2000 65-97
2001 86-76
2002 80-81
2003 86-76
2004 86-76
2005 88-74
2006 85-77
2007 89-73 0-3
2008 92-70 11-3
2009 93-69 7-2
Total 850-769 18-8
The lowlights - The Phillies started the decade at the bottom, going 65-97 in 2000 to tie the Chicago Cubs for the worst record in the majors. Because of the format in place at the time, the Phillies received only the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft. With slugging infielder Mark Teixeira available, the Phillies selected his neighbor: righthander Gavin Floyd of Severna Park, Md.
The payroll - $795.1 million
The stat - The Phillies have won at least 85 games in seven consecutive seasons, the longest current streak in the NL. The Cardinals are second with two consecutive 85-win seasons.
The case for - For the Phillies to stake a realistic claim to the title, they must repeat as World Series champions. Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" is the last NL club to win consecutive World Series, in 1975-76. The Phillies could earn style points with decisive series wins. They were 11-3 in the postseason last season. Boston went 22-6 in winning the World Series in 2004 and '06.
ST . LOUIS Cardinals
The record - 913-707
The highlights
1 World Series championship
2 National League pennants
6 NL Central titles
1 Wild-card berth
The lowlights - A year after their World Series triumph, the Cardinals stumbled badly in 2007 and had their only losing record (78-84) of the decade. They joined the Angels (2002-03), Florida (2003-04), the Chicago White Sox (2005-06) and Tampa Bay (2008-09) as world champions who did not make it to the playoffs in the following season.
The payroll - $831.6 million
The stat - The Cardinals have won eight postseason series in the decade, most among NL teams, and tying them with Boston and the Yankees for the major-league lead.
The case for - The Cardinals need three things to happen: No. 1: Win the World Series. The Cardinals would join Boston as the only multiple winners in the decade. No. 2: Have Boston eliminated in the AL playoffs. The Red Sox would finish the decade with fewer World Series appearances than the Cardinals . No. 3: Have the Yankees eliminated in the AL playoffs. They would finish with as many World Series appearances (3) as the Cardinals but one fewer championship for the decade.

i loved how the godfather of sports talk radio blew this off like it's nothing on fridays. basically giving a big fuck you to any caller who bought up this silly bs talk.

must have missed that, but he's not wrong in saying it's silly time-filler talk, I'm sure his approach at it was not respectful though.

When I do listen, it's usually the first 10 minutes to hear what the topic is and what guests he might have. Other than that, I'm moving around the dial, usually towards FM.

during this decade 20 different franchises played for the league pennant, which is pretty good. the other 10 did not get to for a number of reasons, poor management, poor use of payroll.

05' White Sox 11-1 (including WS sweep)
the Yankees were team of the decade in the 90's also.
2010 counts for next decade right? i think the phightns are set up real well to be in the mix with this core for the next 2-3 years...and luckily they did not give up the farm for cliff lee, they are well stocked in the minors after some of these guys move on.
as far as team of this decade....it is really tough to say. there has not been one dominant team you can point to like in other decades. the sox won 2 series, so i guess you have to go with them?
you think?
i kind of like having so many different teams win the whole thing....
oh, but if you're talking about steroids and all the other failings of bud selig, then yes, i am with you.
The RED SOX were undefeated (8~0) in THe World Series

This sentance still makes me shake my head with a smile.
If you have to put a team on it ... I'd put 2 ... call it the decade of the Yanks & Sox.
Their rivalry was never more heated.
They won 4 titles between them.
Their two ALCS tilts in '03 and '04 were arguably the most memorable series of the entire decade, even more so than every World Series (with the exception of maybe '01 and '02).
But again, it doesn't have to be anyone's decade.
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez
Cardinals come in ahead of the Phillies, no question, as NL team of the decade.
Sorry have to disagree with ya. I believe The Braves were the team of the 90's.
Love the Phills but yeah they are like maybe 4th best this decade. Probably the Yanks are first.

i understand the braves had a hell of a decade in the 90's but how do they beat out a team with 3 championships and a 125 win season? please explain.
no question, huh?
For the 1 team out of the last 10 years. It has to be the 05 White Sox. The combination of 4/5 starting pitchers had a minimum of 14 wins, 4/5 starting pitchers had a maximum era of no higher then 3.87. The bullpen with the Cliff Polite, and Neal Cotts who were unreal, Cotts not giving up 1 earned run after the all star break. Both had ERAs under 2 in nearly 70 appearances each. Plus the addition of Bobby Jenks, one of the best bullpens in history. Offensive lineup was balanced very well. Speed in the front, power in the middle, and balance in the back. Plus the defense by Crede and Rowand. This team dominated the league in 05 and raped the playoffs. Dream come true for Chicago.
Not in my mind. The Phillies have been great the last few years, but the Cardinals have been one of the best teams almost every year.
7 division titles, more than twice as many as the Phills
8 playoff series victories
The Phillies were crap for the first half of the decade.
Um who had a 125 win season in the 90's? I know Seattle had about 115 wins in the early part of this decade but I don't think anyone had 125 wins in the 90's. And if you are talking about the Yankees yeah they had 3 World Series championships, but they came in the late part. They were pretty bad in the early 90's if memory serves me correctly.

The Yankees had 114 wins in the regular season. And 11 wins in the postseason.
2 Championships, 4 Pennants vs. 2 Championships, 2 pennants. Plus they made the playoffs in 9 years, Bostons less, though I'm not sure just how much. You could make a case that the Yankees earned TOTD just by winning their 4th pennant, though I would have given it to Boston for the 2 titles.
