    Matt is the shit!!!
  • Sometimes you just cannot compare musicians with each other. Matt is a great drummer. I have only seen PJ twice live in 2006 in Brisbane. The first night I thought Matt was a bit 'closed up' but the second night he rocked the place like you cant believe. As far as I am concerned Dave A and Jack Irons are history. Matt is the man and sounds just awesome on Backspacer! Rock on Matt.... :)

I've always been dismayed by people who state they dislaike his work or with Dave etc were back in the band. Granted, every Pearl Jam drummer I have seen has been awesomely talented, but Matt is the drummer now and he is the right person for the band. How do i know this? Because he is in the band.

Keep on banging away Matt - plenty of us love ya work!

Well said! I get sick of the Abbruzesse lovers. They live in the past. Matt has been with PJ for a long time now, longer than Dave and Matt is here to stay so the Dave lovers better bloody well get used to it now once and for all. Matt rocks, he's great, I love his drumming and he seems to be an awfully nice guy to boot. Matt was with early PJ, remember that little old album called "Temple of the Dog"? Who was the drummer in that? Matt was, that's who, way before Dave was ever seen or heard of, so as far as I'm concerned he was with PJ since their inception and Dave was after that fact.

Any detail on what he meant by "fakers" in the music world?

That can mean a lot of things. Just curious.

Sorry man i think you may have missunderstood, just meant to go listen to all their stuff extensively so your arn't limited to their collection as i think they are on par with PJ no doubt.

Yeah, I've got to catch up on the early SG music. The latter music is what I've mostly heard, and I prefer the production of Down On The Upside to some of the earlier production they had. :)

What order of the albums would you go from, starting with the album I'm most familiar with of theirs DOTUS

Ultramega okay i.e their first thing isn't worth much of a listen, except Beyond The Wheel which is just one of the best vocal performances ever.

Go to Badmotorfinger (one of the best albums ever, every song is flawless) then Superunknown then back to Louder Than Love. Probs make sense to listen to Superunknown next but meh Badmotorfinger you gotta hear, its just insane on every muscians part.

Hold up, here. Ultramega OK isn't all that bad. Flower is a pretty kick ass tune as is Beyond the Wheel like you mentioned. Nazi Driver is pretty good too. I think it is definitely worth exploring, but for the guy wondering where to go to next, I think you might be right in suggestiong Badmotofinger. Slaves and Bulldozers and Jesus Christ Pose are pretty epic songs in my opinion.

Also, Ultramega OK was their first LP, but they have two EP's before that, Screaming Life and Fopp. These have been released together on a CD called "Screaming Life/Fopp"

From someone who has NO background in drumming:

Jack had awesome beats with soul and depth (In My Tree, Who You Are) and Dave was fast and had great fills (Porch) but Matt is steady eddie. There is something to be said about steady.
  • I know Matt Cameron is a badass drummer and I love his stuff, I just miss what Dave did on specific songs. I was wicked excited when he joined the band. I just wonder if eddie flipped out abput Matt being on the DRUM cover? ;)

    EDIT: because I can't spell.

  • From what I remember reading....Dave A. appearing on the cover of a drummer magazine was one of the contributing factors to Ed wanting him fired from the band. Nice to know you Matt

can you give us a bit more info on the matt vs. jack vs. dave a. stuff?? i'd be interested to hear what matt thinks of it.

he pretty much said how people say that he doenst play like the other drummers. he referred to the "internet geeks" as the people who criticize his playing style. he went on to say that jack irons parts are the hardest drum parts to re-create becuase Jack played with such a swing style and very different from cameron. he said that he plays very different from Dave, and he doesnt care what people think. He says he "couldn't care less" that people dont like his style or how he plays a song.

I knew he'd notice one of my postings on the subject. :D:lol:
    hahaha

further proof the band reads this board

i'd love to see you and matt sit in a room and drum and critique each other. i'd be really curious to see what he has to say bout your drumming.

Haha... no contest. He would win on his material!

I did have this conversation with Ben Harper's drummer (from the 90's) Dean Butterworth, who happened to recognized me (strangely). He agreed that Dave A was awesome with PJ, and wondered why they changed too. That was a cool funny moment.

I just went to guitar center today and they had it in finally. Pretty sweet and long article. they get into some really cool details about how ridiculously hard he hits night after night (warping drum heads, bending cymbals all the time) and how he and brendan recorded the drum parts for the album.

Oh and apparently hes not using a keplinger snare anymore. it says its a "roy haynes" snare (?)

yes he is using a roy haynes model snare now. Roy Haynes is a phenomenal jazz, and all around drummer. he has his own line of snare drums, and Matt likes them

Just happened across this article I recall reading 13 years ago which backs-up your recollection.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/pea ... ystery_man

"Vedder's authority was clear to all in 1994, when drummer Dave Abbruzzese was abruptly fired from the band. "Dave was too much the rock star," says a source close to the band. "He was giving cover-story interviews to drumming magazines. He was happy, he was achieving his dream. That bugged the fuck out of Eddie. I witnessed Eddie drawing mustaches on Dave's face on the cover of Modern Drummer.""

Assuming Rolling Stone indeed had a source inside the band, that means that...

    This is not ok...
    daveAbruzzese2.jpg

But apparently this is perfectly fine....
