just got the mail and the new issue of Drum! magazine. to my suprise matt was on the cover. i opened up and read the article, and it was very good. He talked about people hating on him for not playing like Dave Abbruzzese, or Jack Irons, gave insight on how they recorded the new record, and he described his hate towards the "fakers" in the music business. overall a very well done article. there are a few measures of drum music from the songs the fixer, and gonna see my friend. I'm not sure if it is anywhere online, but i would suggest buying it.

Matt kicks ass. I had great seats for all four Philly shows and was amazed at his stamina. The man is incredible.

Then again, all of PJ kick ass.

  • very true. he is a very solid and powerful. one of my favorite drummers, and not just becuase he plays for Pearl Jam. his style is awesome, and he uses great dynamics, and is an incredible all around musician.

  • Awesome, thanks for posting this. I love Matt Cameron's drumming. Living in Australia i may not be able to get the mag for a month but i'll be checking my local newagency every week.
Fuck i love playing the drums it's my lifeline and it's great to have mags like Drum and Modern Drummer because you get the chance to read about your fav drummers and what they like.
    Thanks again. :D

  • I've always been dismayed by people who state they dislaike his work or with Dave etc were back in the band. Granted, every Pearl Jam drummer I have seen has been awesomely talented, but Matt is the drummer now and he is the right person for the band. How do i know this? Because he is in the band.

Keep on banging away Matt - plenty of us love ya work!

he pretty much said how people say that he doenst play like the other drummers. he referred to the "internet geeks" as the people who criticize his playing style. he went on to say that jack irons parts are the hardest drum parts to re-create becuase Jack played with such a swing style and very different from cameron. he said that he plays very different from Dave, and he doesnt care what people think. He says he "couldn't care less" that people dont like his style or how he plays a song.

Sounds like an awesome interview ... "Internet geeks".

That's about it. Most people who are actually musicians talk about Matt's skill as a drummer. Its the people without that background that knock his style. Not surprised to hear that Jack's parts are a challenge for stylistic reasons. As for Dave A.. .. Well, the guy hasn't been in the band for years and that's a dead horse that needs to be left alone.

Just hasslin' the Hoff ... I get it, everyone's preferences differ. I imagine what chaps Matt's ass are the people who confuse disliking his style with a lack of technical proficiency.

Matt's a monster on drums. What he's done on this new album is truly amazing. I've loved his playing with the limited SG that I'm familiar with. He's one of my favorite drummers. ...except on a ton of the early stuff. Might as well change the singer too on the early stuff, since it's not the same songs anymore. But I'm probably paying more attention to the drums than most.

Yup. I said "I've loved his playing with the limited SG that I'm familiar with". I'm not as up on SG's music as I am on PJ's music. ...so, the limited catalog I'm aware of, out of their full catalog. :D

I do feel that Backspacer is the first studio PJ performance that seems to truly do Matt justice ... I remember hearing Binaural (one of my favorite albums) and thinking "Where's Matt?". Live, he's all over those tunes. Same with the Riot Act songs. On these records, though, the drums fade into the background. Not so with Backspacer, where he is just a powerhouse on Got Some, Gonna See My Friend, and even Speed of Sound.

Yeah, I've got to catch up on the early SG music. The latter music is what I've mostly heard, and I prefer the production of Down On The Upside to some of the earlier production they had. :)

    A - fucking - MEN!

I have my feelings about how he plays the early stuff, but you are 1000% right. This is truly the only album that you really FEEL the drums on (except some of RA). I think the band sounds a little more spontaneous in a good way. Some of the other Matt albums sound dry, like Matt had played it so many times, it became homogenized, like on Avocado even... but Backspacer has a presence of sound unlike the others, plus it sounds more like a band and less like they're trying to make things perfect (though it did come out perfect!).

Ultramega okay i.e their first thing isn't worth much of a listen, except Beyond The Wheel which is just one of the best vocal performances ever.

Go to Badmotorfinger (one of the best albums ever, every song is flawless) then Superunknown then back to Louder Than Love. Probs make sense to listen to Superunknown next but meh Badmotorfinger you gotta hear, its just insane on every muscians part.
