indoctrinated? subjected to more propaganda than north korea maybe? i think so.
i would never deny we're subject to plenty of indoctrination and propaganda (see me in the vet's day thread), but if you think we can even compete with north korea, you truly are delusional.
differnet kind of propaganda. much more advanced
but nowhere near as complete, controlled, or exclusive. the truth is out there easily enough. this very website is proof of that. to act like we have it worse than north koreans is a complete slap in the face to all people in the world who are truly oppressed.
no they weren't. but last i checked, a few rich rock stars preaching from their stage didnt have much to do with that. i'm not saying he souldnt say whatever the fuck he wants onstage, im just saying it's laughable to think eddie vedder's 15 second stage rants make a difference on anything. the work he does offstage matters far, far more in the grand scheme of things.
I don't regard him expressing his views onstage as preaching. And I never said that he speaks onstage to make a difference or convince anyone, but those of us like-minded people enjoy hearing his slant on things. It's not such a big deal, and I enjoy hearing him speak because he's a great public speaker and he invariably sheds an interesting angle on things. I find him entertaining, both as a singer, and as a conscientious individual.

i'm not so sure i agree with him being a great public speaker all the time. you really should hear his dream speech from the cleveland 06 show... i've heard more coherent political rants from my hippy friends while they were tripping balls i won't deny it was entertaining though. even the rest of the band was cracking up and looking at each other like "what the fuck is he talking about?" that was the night i decided i didn't care if he never talked politics again. it was like when your buddy is drunk and making a fool of himself but you don't really have the heart to tell him. you just feel embarrassed for him and want to get him home before it gets worse.

i wish i could find a transcript of that speech.
I didn't say he was a great public speaker all the time. And the fact that he may have fucked up on occasions makes no difference. If anything it just makes him more human/down to Earth - which is something many people around here seem to have a problem with.
Regardless, the majority of the time he hit's the nail on the head.

fair enough. i'm just now fixated on that speech. it was the most surreal moment i ever had at a pj show. it kinda makes me wonder if some people here are right... he seemed to be straining so hard to find new things to say about the same old subjects and it didn't work. maybe he's just figured that at this point he's said all he can say about certain subjects and he ought to just move on.

I'll make a point of checking it out. I'm curious now. :geek:
Perhaps, they didn't mention anything about Gitmo as was suggested -- to respect the end of the Spectrum. I'll buy that, it does make sense. But for such a public voice that Eddie used to be at shows...to drop off to nothing since the election of Obama...well, it makes me wonder what the Hell happened. Will he ever mention politics or social issues again at PJ shows? Was the Spectrum really out of respect? I guess we'll see. I liked hearing what he had to say.
personally, i really, really think so. as far as the spectrum, i definitely think it was all about celebrating the venue, going out with a bang...a happy and positive note - focus on the history of the venue, and nothing else. totally classy how they did the place proud imo. they all seemed to be having a BLAST and for all these reasons why i think that is why politics were noticably absent.
i think politics and social issues will both resurface at pj shows in the future. again, i don't think it's necessary for them to mention causes or politics they support or disagree with at every show. also, given how clearly in support of obama the whole band was/is, i don't find it odd that not much has been said since. however, given enough time and possible disappointment, i am sure we will hear from ed again! pearl jam has been far too vocal from day one to shut up now. also, the bush years probably were the height of ed being so vocal, regularly, at shows. i would never expect that to such a degree again, at least i hope not...b/c that would mean we elected another GW somewhere down the road.
i think ed and pj will always be outspoken for causes they believe in. but you bet, only time will tell.
