A better question would be....Is Pearl Jam your #1 band?....Whether you like U2 or NOT they will always have around this world twice as many or more fans than PJ.
Why the hell worry or fret over U2 focus on the bands that work for you?
Peace

He didn't seem too worried about them...seemed like he was just wondering about other people's opinions.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,

I've always laughed at the people who say they dont like U2...I mean what exactly is there not to like? Bono? give me a break..U2 is one of the most influencial bands to ever walk the planet..deal with it. Its like the people who say "I dont like the Beatles" who cares! bottom line is you owe most of the music YOU listen to TO THEM...just like U2

Whatever Im smoking? Maybe you should remember the words of the lead singer of the band whos forum you are browsing....U2 and Bono in particular are the REASON hes in the music business and many many many bands have listed U2 as an influence
my main issue with U2 is the way they completly sold out hard in the last decade. Starting with Actung Baby through Zooropa and Pop they were changing their sound-something that they had been doing from the start- but once Pop went bust they stopped taking any chances and rather concerned themselves with making a record that sounded like what people thought U2 should sound like. I mean All that you can't leave behind sounds like a great record but the thing is they simply rerecorded the Joshua tree. The last three albums are such a footnote in terms of creative innovation that it's lame. Of course people were so scared of their beloved U2 turning into a techno band that they embraced this boring middle of the road shit with open arms. That and everything is so contrived, I mean they put on a great show but compared to Pearl Jam-since this is a PJ board- you never know what may happen and while Bono may tag some cool stuff the songs are are going to be the same maybe one or 2 may change and they're going to be presented in exactly the same way. The point of all of this is they stopped taking chances and it's a sin because I loved the shit out of Pop I thought it was a fantastic album good songs and great effects/production. I can empathize to a fault the problems in my argument (live show is the same because so many effects are needed etc etc and the appeal of a back to basics approach) but those two things don't excuse the mindnumbingly boring middle of the road stuff they've been releasing lately. If I wanted to listen to watered down U2 I'd listen to Coldplay and if I wanted a completle lack of artistic growth I'd listen to the Foo Fighters.

Get real, plz.
U2 isn't in the same class as the Beatles no matter how you cut it. They're barely the best band from Ireland.

nice....
I agree with pretty much everything you've said...hadn't put that much thought into it since I was never a HUGE U2 fan, but your post explains why I lost interest after Pop...
I also think U2 gets a lot of undue criticism/backlash....
I don't understand how people can be fans of guitar-based rock, and say they hate ANY band that is so widely considered one of the 'greats'. It's like saying you hate PJ or the Hip or any other established, mainstream, yet somewhat unique band which has contributed largely to pop culture. Even if you're not a big fan of the music, and can't stand them as people, there should be SOME modicum of respect, or at least tolerance...I think if it's pure venom spewed at one of these bands, people are usually being that way out of some kind of musical inferiority complex (like, I'm so indie), or....they just have bad taste in music, with no concept of, or appreciation for, rock n roll lineage. To each their own, I s'pose.
i dont like them. well i sort of like the early stuff, but other than that, it is garbage to me and i have no friends that like them only people on the ten club are ones i know that like them. but just my opinion. people get very testy if you dont like their band. who gives a shit?? if you like them then who cares??
and, i know it's shocking to hear this coming from a PJ fan, but i really respect the hell out of Bono.
why he is an egomaniac!!!
becos he has done more for other people and to fight poverty and other important international issues than you will ever be capable of doing. he could sit in a mansion counting his money and paying 18 year old escorts to blow him all day, but he doesnt. instead, he puts himself out there and wears his heart on his sleeve, knowing that it costs him a lot in the way of respect from people like you but willing to pay that price anyway in order to support causes that need recognition from people with his kind of visibility and audience. you would think that of all people, pearl jam fans would understand and respect that.
