A better question would be....Is Pearl Jam your #1 band?....Whether you like U2 or NOT they will always have around this world twice as many or more fans than PJ.
Why the hell worry or fret over U2 focus on the bands that work for you?

U2 isn't in the same class as the Beatles no matter how you cut it. They're barely the best band from Ireland.
I agree with pretty much everything you've said...hadn't put that much thought into it since I was never a HUGE U2 fan, but your post explains why I lost interest after Pop...
I also think U2 gets a lot of undue criticism/backlash....
I don't understand how people can be fans of guitar-based rock, and say they hate ANY band that is so widely considered one of the 'greats'. It's like saying you hate PJ or the Hip or any other established, mainstream, yet somewhat unique band which has contributed largely to pop culture. Even if you're not a big fan of the music, and can't stand them as people, there should be SOME modicum of respect, or at least tolerance...I think if it's pure venom spewed at one of these bands, people are usually being that way out of some kind of musical inferiority complex (like, I'm so indie), or....they just have bad taste in music, with no concept of, or appreciation for, rock n roll lineage. To each their own, I s'pose.
i respect their body of work a great deal though.
and, i know it's shocking to hear this coming from a PJ fan, but i really respect the hell out of Bono.

becos he has done more for other people and to fight poverty and other important international issues than you will ever be capable of doing. he could sit in a mansion counting his money and paying 18 year old escorts to blow him all day, but he doesnt. instead, he puts himself out there and wears his heart on his sleeve, knowing that it costs him a lot in the way of respect from people like you but willing to pay that price anyway in order to support causes that need recognition from people with his kind of visibility and audience. you would think that of all people, pearl jam fans would understand and respect that.
