not necessarily "heroes", but people who are at the "top of my heap", in terms of respect for their ideology, brilliance, personality, contribution to humanity, etc.

All three are against the grain, quirky, at least somewhat curmudgeonly, intently concerned with the well being of ALL humanity, and had massive conviction.

I think you have to be very careful of who your heroes are and very practical about why these people are your heroes. I think it's a bad habit to say that so and so is flat-out your hero...so and so can be your hero when it comes to this or that trait or accomplishment, but you are bound to be in for a sea of disappointment if you just say that some person is your hero period. Humans are a weak, fragile lot; and, their weaknesses will always outweigh any strong point they may display. I'm not saying don't admire that strong point, I'm just saying don't generalize the good thing to the point you start forgetting the person is in fact just a person--just like any other.
  • as long as you realise everyone has their faults and weaknesses, there is nothing wrong with having heroes. if someone has mastered a certain aspect of their life, and its an area you also wish to master, that person should be admired as a hero.
  • sometimes things are over analyzed. for me the word hero, just means someone i have looked up to at some stage in my life, and that can change depending on what point in your life you are at. when i was 6 yoda and luke sykywalker were my heroes. the only non fictional character that i would call my hero is my brother.

for me, heros represent the best of ourselves, yet being human and therefore flawed, they also help and allow us to accept our limitations.

i will never understand why we talk this way about soldiers but shit on teachers. that's america's biggest problem right there. not that i don't respect what they do... but it makes as little sense as our unquestioned acceptance of violence on tv and in movies, while nudity gives us fits.

Not sure what you're driving at here ... Not everyone shits on teachers, and not everyone respects soldiers. Not even sure how one thought leads to the other.

I will agree with the nudity point, though ... Some titties on TV are the end of the world, but its OK to make movies that graphically portray physical and psychological torture under the guise of entertainment value.

titties???? what about a penis?? is that too much to ask for? i know guys have an 'issue' with their penis but come on... something for the girls would be nice, you know. perhaps if we saw all kinds of penisea on our screens guys wouldnt be made to feel so lacking and inadequate.

yeah, becos the people on american tv are 'average' in the physical appeal dept ;)

as to titties, i think most americans think of the janet jackson breast thing at the super bowl a few years ago. we drag our feet for months on health care, but her tit pops out for 1/10th of a second on national tv and the entire country went ape shit and congress was having hearings the next day. over here, titties on tv apparently ARE the end of the world. we'll be scorching in hell before we ever let a cock on tv.

I think its more along the lines of religious folks caring very much about this issue and people in high places acting like they give a shit in order to gain the support of these people.

are you serious????? thats fucked up. though extremely amusing.

but lets be honest here SS titties can be mesmerising for some lads. they see a pair and totally lose the power of speech and any manners they may or may not have had as their tongue rolls out of their head and they spew the most obscene words.

you know... i was standing in the kitchen tonight refilling my wine glass and it suddenly occurred to me that conjoined twins are same sex twins. i wondered whether conjoined twins could ever be male/female. i guess not.

they come from the same fertilized egg, and are genetically identical, so that's why they would be the same sex i guess.

it's a wonderful story isn't it cate. i saw moira kelly so emotional in an interview earlier. heartbreaking what she has been through. such a strong lady.

    enjoy the wine :)
