When I first saw the question, this is immediately what I thought of as well. I never liked the song No Way, but I do love the "metal" part of the song and wish that it had been the part they developed instead.
But LedZep, while initially branded as metal, is not metal in the vein of what metal is now. LedZep is rock'n'roll. Iron Maiden is metal. Time has changed what metal means. Many PJ songs definitely would have been considered metal in the 70s, but it ain't the 70s
since you're obviously this thread's resident metal expert, what constitutes being metal? We know Metallica and Iron Maiden and the rest of the usual suspects. But I've heard Skid Row and bands like that called be called metal. that's metal? I've even heard Limp Bizket referred to as metal. the term "metal," like every other sub-genre of rock music, is vague.
I'm gonna say TREMOR CHRIST. It's not their biggest, loudest or fastest song, but that's not necessarily what metal is either. If there's ever been one song that stood out from the rest of PJ's catalog to me as sounding completely different from their other work, this is it.
The bass is up front, the drums are heavy. Both of which are metal staples. The structure of the song, the lyrics, the theme...it all lends itself to the metal genre very nicely. I can easily imagine many metal bands doing this song...they'd make it "more" metal, but still, the essence of the song and its sound would remain unchanged.

LIVE... i gotta say the (sometimes) harmony between mike and stone on the ending of porch. THe metal influence is all in the guitars... its quite, 'there' actually.
All the songs listed so far are definately more punk than metal.............all in all PJ shifts more towards punk than metal.
well that makes sense, though they quote metal bands as influences they broke throgh as a grunge band.... which is almost an entire offshoot of 80's punk
though interestingly enough if you watch the documentary on metal, headbangers something (i dont quite remember) it branches out all the types of metal, including many punk genres including grunge
I'm not really into metal....in fact I hate most bands that are considered metal these days, but I think that You Are is a pretty dark and metal sounding from the beginning. But today it seems that speed defines metal, so that probably doesn't work. Their fast songs are more punk and their dark slow songs are more metal to me.....girl, hold on, nais, brother, etc...
Hmm...
Go - if You change vocal - music is rather metal
blood-punk
lukin - punk
rearviewmirror - the end- yes! after Ed vocal (i've almost forget about the finish...)
push me, pull me - ??? or maybe not..\
nothing as it seems-it might be metal ballad
bushleager - the beginning - light version of metal
spin the black circle - punk
bugs - waltz of drunk bum
dirty Frank - peppers or chili
Brother-yes
Most of them - Go

Well, Skid Row, Poison and other '80s bands of that ilk are not "metal" and never were. Limp Bizkit had plenty of metal influence, but I wouldn't necessarily say they qualify as true metal.
To me, metal bands are the hardest of the hard. Sepultura was metal, but AC/DC, for example, is hard rock. My true headbanging days are far behind me now and I don't listen to the radio so I couldn't really tell you what metal is these days...maybe Disturbed and those types qualify, but metal in its truest form is still carried by the likes of Slayer
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow
They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
lyrically, HOLD ON is by far the most metal song Pearl Jam has.
Hehe, Words about Riding atop a black horse dont appear that often in PJ catalogue do they?
heck yeah it is. i love that line. closest thing to a metal lyric PJ ever came up with. Sounds like the next lines should be about overlooking a battle field or slaughtering the innocents or something.
I remember Stone saying the he listened to Motorhead and Iron Maiden, he even played bass in band March of Crimes then he met Steve Turner and he got Stone liking punk.
They do have a big punk influence as well as metal, but I'm not sure what metal sounds like.
Here’s a question you might need to ask
What’s self destruction and how can we last?
"I cannot stop the thought of running in the dark.
Coming up a which way sign. All good truants must decide."

Or more realistically, I think Deep is the most metal sounding song, although it's not metal.

Alone is metal all over to my ears. The chords, the stops, the screams, the solo, and lyrics about burning from lost love.....classic metal!
The bass & lead guitars in Deep particularly stand out.
Blood,Go, STBC, BOJ, Lukin, Animal, etc are all to fast & frantic to be metal in my eyes, and all are punk
you should just go a step further and shoot yourself in the true Jeremy fashion.
