I'd vote for Deep, if anything. Been listening to the Atlanta 94 version a lot lately. It's awesome!
Deep is a good suggestion.
oh- hear me out on this one- SAD.
think about it.
...wait I'm listening right now...I sort of stand by it...definitely the main riff is more of a metal riff...not totally, but we're saying the "most" metal sounding....
Porch? I think Go is a contender, as is the end of RVM. Not for you has a metallic edge as well. The intro to Bu$hleaguer...kinda metal riff. A lot of their solos are definitely inspired by old school metal - the solo in life wasted, for example.

Go is definitely punk.
But you could be right about Porch.
Well, if they dont have any, how about opening the next album with a classic riff 'in the ball park' Symphony of Destruction by MegaDeath, then transform it into something punk.
I would maybe stretch and say Severed Hand is a bit Metal live during the intro??? Not really my ear, so I dont know for sure...??
Everything listed thus far is truly punk...you are not going to find a metal song in PJ's catalog. Some may rock more than others, but no metal...sorry

Yep. My (metal) band did a sweet cover of GO awhile back. I wish I had it recorded to show everyone, but trust me it sounded pretty metal without having to change hardly anything.
off the top of my head i would have to say ..........NONE!
If i guessed i would say 3/4 of the replies to this thread are from people that very rarely if ever listen to metal. blood, comatose, rvm, these are all "hard rock" songs. sure they might have some heavier moments but in no way is it metal. in fact, none of them are even played in the same tuning as metal.

that's why I suggested sad. I'm no metalhead, don't get me wrong, but the tuning sounds more metal than anything else to me, and the main riff, though not metal, definitely seem more metal inspired than their others.
Also, I don't know if it's accurate, but I've always thought that the term "Heavy Metal" was first used to describe led zep...if you think of "metal" in that sense...I know it's not how we think of metal now and the point of the thread, but the line between "hard rock" and "metal" wasn't always so clear.
(and I've never thought of KISS as metal, as the OP suggests, it's more like...hmm...crap.)

There is no need for this argument to continue because there is no metal in PJ's recorded music. The most metal you will find is when Mike plays a tiny part of Number of the Beast (isn't it?) on the MSG dvd when Ed is talking about the bands that have made the stage bounce up and down
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow
They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

I think it's one of the more interesting discussions I've seen here.
Agree. Atleast the live version. More specifically, the live versions from '03.
Everything else is certainly more punk/pop than metal.
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
Deep, Alone. Brother (instrumental version in particular), Garden, Girl..
Actually these are the songs with a metal influence, but still no classic metal songs.. Eddie could not sing a true metal song, at least with his actual voice..
PJ music is simply Fuckin' Rock and Roll.
^^ Could be, but its just that there is no real discussion to be had . No Metal. Period.
I don't think it's so cut-and-dry as that.
We all know the members of pearl jam all have their own musical influences, which run the gamut across the genres in rock history. metal is clearly not the primary influence, however it's in their somewhere, discretely. what's good about pearl jam is they are a "rock" band. their music encompasses all of it.
Also, back in high school, in the 90s, there was always a rift between the more punk kids and more metal kids. I remember the punk kids hated pearl jam because they were too "metal" (i.e. they played solos). The metal kids were more likely to listen to pearl jam.
they borrow a lot from Led Zep, for god's sake. Zep was metal. maybe not 80s metal, but metal.
But LedZep, while initially branded as metal, is not metal in the vein of what metal is now. LedZep is rock'n'roll. Iron Maiden is metal. Time has changed what metal means. Many PJ songs definitely would have been considered metal in the 70s, but it ain't the 70s

even so, i think there a few little metal sounds in Vs. and Vitology. Vitalogy isn't the punk album its made out to be.

I disagree with NOTHING you say. It goes back to what someone defines as metal. There are certainly metal influences in PJ's music, but as far as any of the riffs or complete songs....I can't find one that anyone who has listened to true metal would classify as metal.

I don't think that's what the OP was asking. he said what is metal sounding. we know PJ isn't metal. I took the question as "where do you hear metal influences?"

How is Brother punk?

Let's not be stupid here, you know what I meant by "rock"...I didn't mean some are rock n' roll songs and some aren't.
I guess I just don't hear any true metal in any PJ song...just my ear I guess.

You forgot the word "fuckin'" before "rock and roll".. Pearl Jam are rock, but a superior level of rock, so it's "fuckin' rock and roll"..
