To be in the spirit of "Ed" I would say get some pinot noir, as I know he was drinking some from a friend's vineyard a while back. I don't really like pinot, however, so I really don't have any good recommends...sorry.

I guess it depends on what your price range is, but I must disagree. Blackstone is only good if you don't want to spend more than $8-10.

I read Ed likes a Barolo red wine 20 to 40$
we tried some once- kind of a treat since we drink too much to buy wine that expensive
it was good though ours was a Cab I think
a good dry red wine is a Chianti- a Gabiano about 10-12$
a good red Zin is Seven Deadly Zins
Night Harvest was good- a CA Merlot
    getting thirsty here :D
  • how about something made from a Pearl Jam fan...like me! My winery is called Sleight of Hand Cellars, and I am in Walla Walla WA...hunt some down!

Yeah...I don't like merlot either, or cab for that matter. Personally, I always drink pinot noir or malbec.

Here are some of my favorites...

Pinot - Best for you $ - Tapiz 08 and Dahlia Reserve 08
Pinot - Under $25 - Tower Brook 07, Acacia Carneros 07, Fly Catcher 07, Valley Of The Moon 07
Pinot - Over $25 but worth it - Barnett Vento Valle 07, Laetitia Reserve 06, Gryphon Larklinn Reserve 06

Malbec - Valentine Bianchi 06, Ben Marco 07, Zolo Malber Gaucho Select 08 (best deal for your $), Altocedro 08

    Arizona...

I also work at a Scottsdale private golf club and we have monthy winemaker dinners. I was just wondering if you do stuff like that? We have a wine cellar and limit the dinner to 30 or so and charge an exorbitant amount of money. The winemakers work with our chef.

I see you have a club too, which might be worth it to me. I probably buy a dozen or more a month. :D

Let me know if you ship, so I can try. AND...there is always a possibility of visiting. My husband and I just bought land in between Crescent City CA and Brookings OR and are planning a coastal trip all the way up.
  • I actually have a distributor in AZ, Frank-Lin Beverage, who just bought Wunderlust Trading Co. My wines are at Whole Foods, and a few other spots. Would love to come down for a winemakers dinner though! Let me know if you can't find the wines...the Illusionist is cellar door only right now, but I can ship to AZ, so....

Rosemount Shiraz ('01 in particular) would be my choice. Not a big fan of Cabernet or Merlot--Shiraz is a tad fruity, a slight bit strong but without the complete dryness of Chianti or Sangiovese and none of the wood barrell oakiness of Cabernet. If you get lucky and find the '01 Reserve buy it (runs about $25)! It'll be one of the best red wines you'll have, otherwise any other odd year of Rosemount seems to be good to really good...not as good as 01 but better than say Yellow Tail (cheap but ok) or any of the other low to mid end Shiraz, Cabernet or Merlot I've tried.

Back to the topic though, what do you mean by "buy wine for the shows"? You're not allowed to bring bottles into the venue, right?

I assume that is a rule at all venues... However In LA and San Diego I was not searched at all and could have brought a little bit of booze with me... My DW's purse was looked at though... Not sure how security is back East...
