Eating and browsing in Boston?

Taking the girlfriend there next week.

We are staying at the Sheraton.

Anyone have any food suggestions? We like Indian,Thai, Persian, BBQ & Steak, but are open to most others. We are Planning on going to Abe and Louie's before the Swell Season show at Berklee.

Also, what is a good neighborhood to browse...any good "indie" neighborhoods?

We are trying to avoid any areas with too many backwards baseball-capped massholes!

Any good pubs for Irish music?

That's awesome! Sorry I can't be of help, but I'm sure the good people from Boston are chomping at the bit to help you after that comment ;) ..

Try the Capital Grill for steak. A great old fashioned neighborhood with limited massholes would be the North End. Preferably Hanover St. It is an Italian neighborhood with great restaurants. Fanueil Hall has lots of bars and clubs if you are into that kind of thing. The Hard Rock is across from Fanueil Hall on Clinton St. off of North St. Try a Duck tour also. Goes through the city then into the Charles River for a great, unobstructed view of the city. The Freedom Trail is also a great walking tour of the city. http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

PS Southie is a great Irish neighborhood. Anywhere around there would have traditional Irish music along with many beers on tap. Enjoy!

Capital Grill has one of the best Belvedere extra dry martinis, imo. Lovely drink....
Along the freedom trail, if you're into raw oysters, hit the Union Oyster House....mere stumbling distance to the Bell in Hand. Take Pleasant Street down the hill from the Bunker Hill Monument and The Warren Tavern is a good pub.

    I'm sure you'll have fun!!!!

So, I've been out of Boston for 5 years but, here's some (potentially dated) opinions.

Grille 23 > Capital Grill for steaks.

If you want to steer clear of the douchebags, avoid the Faneuil Hall bar scene after 10 PM, it's like a bug light for fucktards.

Duck Tour is a good call ... go during a weekday afternoon if you can, it should be less busy.

Hmm, Irish Pub ... there are quite a few in Boston (obviously) ... but when I was in that mood, I fould myself at the Burren in Davis Sq (Somerville), you can take the Red Line there or a small cab ride ... Redbones is over there as well if you're dying for BBQ, a lot of people love it (I think it's overrated)

I'll try and think of some other tidbits ...

  • I was there a few weeks ago attending a Bruins game

Definitely get seafood. Any resturaunt has good shit.

There is a lot to see in Boston with the rich history

If you want a good irish bar go to The Tavern I forget what street it's on

Best poured Guinness I've had in some time

Abe & Louies or Capital Grille are good for steaks, you can get Capital Grille at home I assume though. Also right by Abe & Louie's if you want good seafood try Atlantic Fish. Tell Jen the manager you're a friend of mine. Legal Seafoods is decent as well, though I think in the city you can do better at Atlantic Fish or Union Oyster House. Anthony's Pier 4 was once the premier seafood place (its on the water on Northern Ave past the aquarium) but its gone decidely down hill in recent years, though the popovers are still quite good.
For BBQ, Redbones in Somerville as Jimed mentioned is decent, though East Coast Grille in Inman Square in Cambridge is better.
The North End is loaded with Italian restaurants, many small and overpriced. Your best bet in the North End is a late night stroll for a cannoli at Mike's pastry.

Faneuil Hall is your basic tourist trap area, overpriced shopping, a very large food court type area, a few decent but not outstanding restaurants. Pizzeria Regina is a decent option if you like thin crust pizza. The original is in the north end and there's one at Faneuil Hall.

Harvard Square in Cambridge might be a good take for a walk and browse. And you can get a great burger at Bartley's or some great Tex-mex at Border Cafe (both no frills/no atmosphere places with great food).

Will you have a car or just confined to the city/public trans?

Definitely have to agree about Davis Square in Somerville. The Burren is a great Irish Pub and Johnny D's has unreal brunch on the weekends. Easy to get there via red line, which is much quicker then the green. Central square also has some cool bars, especially The People's Republic of Cambridge.

I also highly recommend taking the orange line to the Sam Adams Brewery and catching a tour. They are free and hook you up with both free beer and a glass!

    Enjoy the trip.

Never have truer words been posted.

There are many great places, but if you wan't indie I recommend cambridge and it's various areas like Harvard and Davis Square.

We will have a local friend schlepping us around by car, but we will also be on our own, using public trans some of the time.

Thin crust mostly, although some places have their version of thick crust.

You can take the commuter rail from South Station to Mansfield. There may be shuttles from the train station to Gillette. Not far......

The North End is a cool place to walk around. You can get overwhelmed with all the Italian seafood places, but I would highly recommend Giacomo's! Little tiny place and you have to wait outside to get a table (usually), but the food is fantastic! The Fruiti de Mare is unbelievable!

Second Mike's Pastry for a cannoli. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!

It would be a tough ticket against Miami. I think they run a train direct to Foxborough for games still. But its a hassle from the city, it would encompass your entire day...but you could tell her about all the upscale shops at Patriot Place, surrounding the stadium...maybe you go to the game and give her your credit card to shop for 3.5 hours.

How about Celts/Suns Fr Nov 6?
Right in the city, probably can find tix on a release a couple days prior to game. (There's alway Miley Cyrus at the Garden Mon 11/9 too, )

I do have more to say!

Newbury street is very cool...I like the mellow vibe there...and it was very close to our hotel.

The Fenway Park tour was great...the tour guide made it fun!

Abe & Louies char their steaks, even if you get it cooked medium!

Berklee performance center is a great venue!

The Boston common is a great place for a stroll on a Sunday.....we ran into Roger Daltrey there!

The North End is amazing...huge lines for the pastry shops.....love the small Italian grocery stores!

Who knew that Boston had som many historical sights!....a few more then L.A. :)
