Is anyone else interested in serial killers?

I know the title of the thread may sound strange/morbid...but recently I've really gotten into reading and studying them. My girlfriend has a good amount of books on serial killers, which kind of sparked my interest.

The main one I find the most fascinating is Ted Bundy. Charismatic, intelligent, handsome...but brutally violent, and 100% evil.

Most interesting...and maybe part of the reason why I'm so pulled in is because in 1974 he committed some acts in Utah...in areas that I am so familiar with, and have been my entire life. He abducted Debbie Kent, a 17 year old student from Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah. A knee cap that matched her age and size was found at the site that Bundy claimed to have dumped her in Fairview, Utah.

I graduted from Viewmont High School in 2006. Ted Bundy also escaped from the Davis County Jail (now a courthouse) in Farmington, Utah. I grew up less than a mile away from that building. An English teacher I had in my senior year was at VHS the night Kent was abducted, there was a play being performed. He walked by a man he said to be "Good looking, and clean cut." Later, he found out who that man was. He looked Ted Bundy right in the eyes.

Perhaps his involvement with the community I've grown up in is the reason I'm so interested?

Ted Bundy's so creepy because he looked so normal. And it's weird because I think I could have been taken in by him - a cute guy who comes up to you with his arm in a sling and asks if you can help him. Sure, why not?

The Ann Rule book on him is the best, I think. The Stranger Beside Me. She knew him, too. Ick. It's a really creepy book, not to be read late at night.

Not a serial killer (just a killer ;) ), but I HIGHLY recommend "Executioner's Song" by Norman Mailer - the story of Gary Gilmore. It's like 1100 pages long and I've read it twice (maybe 3?) times.

Seriously though, I've read a couple of books about him and it is interesting trying to understand what/why made him who he was. There's a film as well isn't there? I'm terrible with names, it might just have been called Bundy, but I couldn't guarantee that.

Sadly, I have a friend who killed 2 people about 15 years ago or so. I have another friend who killed 1 person. I also know of a neighbor kid who killed a lady in a robbery of her purse. He ran her over after stealing the purse and he got away with it. The guy with him took all of the rap. I guess this buddy of his decided why should they both go to jail, however; it was the one I know who actually killed her. A lot of people I know had to go in front of a grand jury and they all lied to keep this kid out of jail. Sick! I know good people too, but I happen to know these people and I knew them all quite well.

Hahaha! Nah, I definitely don't have the heart to harm anything except for flies and spiders.

Yeah the film is called Bundy. Watching it is actually what sparked my interest in him...then after reading up on him, I discovered his acts in Utah and then learned of my English teachers experience and just...wow....he was a different breed of serial killers no doubt.

Another one is Gacy...really interests me. What blows my mind though is how long the Chicago PD neglected to investigate him because of his involvement with the community...didn't want to bring on embarassment to the higher-ups. Think about how many boys COULD'VE been saved...:(

although i have no interest in serial killers, i was reminded this week of the serial killer that killed right up the street from me when i was in high school

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Ramirez

my spanish teacher had a crush on him...yeah she was a waste of a human being
  • When I was 15, a boy my exact age (9 days younger than me) was arrested for killing a woman and her two little girls. He was convicted and imprisoned. Eventually it was learned that he had killed another woman 2 years earlier, when he was THIRTEEN!

The crimes were brutal home invasion stabbings. He ended up not technically being a serial killer because he was caught. This took place back in Rhode Island in the late 80s. Last I heard, the state was continually charging him with new crimes that he allegedly committed in prison... you know, to keep him "inside." I won't type his name because the bots record links to this site. I don't want to give him any new attention.

oooohhh serial killers my favourite subject.

the misbegotten son - jack olsen. this ones the story of arthur shawcross. who after being released from jail for killing a boy and a girl went on to murder several women.

the shoemaker: anatomy of a psychotic - flora rheta schreiber. this ones about joseph kallingar

shot in the dark - mikal gilmore. about his brother gary gilmore.

the riverman - robert keppel. green river killer. this ones interesting in how it shows ted bundy insinuating his way into the investigation in hopes of staying his execution.

obsession - john douglas. douglas was the head of the FBIs inverstigative support unit. any of his books are worth reading

whoever hunts monsters - robert ressler. ressler is also a former FBI guy involved in the establishment of VICAP and the behavioural sciences unit.

the last victim - jason moss. moss corresponded with manson and dahmer amongst others wanting to figure out what made them tick. he especially got involved with john wayne gacy. being a young guy gacy wold have found him quite tantalising i imagine. anyhoo... he moss himself not so long ago.

any book by anne rule is worth reading too.

we have our own serial killer now, with the Pickton case.
if you don't know of him hes a pig farmer who killed prostitutes and fed them to his pigs. some of the ways he had supposedly killed them is pretty brutal...

I am with the investigative side of Serial Killers, the mindset of a SK and what leads them to getting caught. One my favorite shows is The Next 48 etc. I must tell you about one the most haunting movies about a Serial Killer and that was Russian Andrei Chikatilo and the movie about him CITIZEN X. The movie and the things he did to the Russian ctizens were totally scary.

I read all murder books in general. Probably 1/2 of my TV watching has to do with true crime, 99% of that real life murder stories. BF always thinks I'm trying to figure out ways to get rid of him! Don't know why it intrigues me. Just does. Always has.
The only person I ever wanted to write was Charles Manson. Mostly because it would be a trip to get a letter back from him. He's so nutty the letters I have seen that he has sent are just crazy. I mean he will never get out so it's not like he will come and get me.

Uh oh, Doc Just said Helter Skelter on the hockey broadcast...Maybe a sign I should send a letter.

you are aware that manson isnt in prison cause he killed anyone, right??

oh and may i suggest you read(if you havent already) the last victim by jason moss. he decided to write to gacy, dahmer, manson and ramirez and its quite the tale of manipulation. you must always remember who it is youre dealing with. these guys can be quite disarmingly charming. not to mention super creepy.

I LOVE all that forensic shit! Right now I'm reading a book called "Stiff" by Mary Roach - it's about human cadavers that were willingly or unwillingly willed to med schools and forensic institutions...not really about crime, but still quite fascinating!

Yeah, anything by Anne Rule is a great read. I'm not sure if she wrote a book about Clifford Olsen I'd read it (he's the guy in the early 80's that killed 16 kids in BC)...I tried reading a book on Paul Bernardo and Carla Holmoka, but just couldn't' do it. But I think these types of books are necessary for people to read - you can't get so angry about a crime that you want to change the criminal justice system until you've read just how sick some people can be.

Can anyone recommend a good book on John Wayne Gacey?

I posted something on here a few minutes ago, but the lights started flickering, and I lost my cable...

So I'll make this short.. I've been interested in serial killers since I was attacked by a serial rapist. This creep stalked and attacked me in my own apartment. It was 10:30 in the morning.

I found out later that he had murdered a girl back when he was 16 yrs old, in which he finally spent time in prison for, but he has been free since this past August.

He's been a predator all of his life obviously starting from an early age. These serial rapist/killers are predators and they will always re-offend...
