I know that not everyone here is a huge Springsteen fan, but you have to respect the show he put on for his final night at the Spectrum - three hours, twenty minutes of gloves-off straight up rockin' and rollin.'

Here's the whole setlist - which, by the way, included Born in the USA in full. The challenge has been issued to PJ, here's hoping they blow the E-Street Band out of the water :)

Excellent. Ed won't want to be topped.

How the hell is Ed's voice going to hold up for these shows? I predict by Halloween he's all fucked up. In which case I hope he gets all drunk with us and wears a costume and makes a mess of the show. I'd be happily entertained with that. Keep it tight on the 30th though Ed.
  • that is a beautiful set list.

  • That is an amazing set list! Out in the Street, Promised Land, and Rosalita... I'd kill to hear Bruce & E Street play those songs. Not to mention all of Born in the USA... but CLOSING with Rosalita!? Amazing. And only one song form the last album... even THEY know it sucks. When you'd rather play (and the audience would rather hear) your entire album from 25 years ago, that's gotta be a sign. I really liked Magic, but Working on a Dream has maybe 3 good songs, and at least 3 that are really, really horrible. I have never seen Bruce (except his solo tour in the mid 90s, which was killer), but what a great time to be a fan. After they WERE playing a lot of the new album at the beginning of the tour, they've really wrapped up the tour nicely.

And you're right, Ed's voice is not going to hold up for all 4 nights of Philly. They did a good job spacing them out a bit, but the 31st is gonna be rough for sure. What a run though... I'd kill to go to all 4 of those shows, too.

The thing with Pearl Jam is they need to follow REM's lead (yes, I know PJ plays way longer shows)... REM put out an album full of short songs too, but they said "Since the songs are shorter, we play more songs live." At most of the last few shows, it seems like quantity wise, they're the same as the Pearl Jam shows of the past, but other than San Diego (I'm guessing, here), it doesn't seem like they were all that lengthy time-wise. Johnny Guitar and some of those songs are 2 1/2 to 3 minutes... they should play TWO to count it as ONE on the setlist. :)

31 songs on the Bruce setlist, and I bet not one of them is under 3 minutes. And remember, most of that band is probably now in their SIXTIES.

Hmm ... that's 31 songs. Doesn't seem THAT long to me ... wasn't LA4 31 songs? Does Bruce have fairly long songs on average compared to PJ?

It's 31 songs, but the show clocked in at three hours and twenty minutes. Much longer than any PJ show - on this tour, at least.

Sorry but I doubt vedder will WANT to out-do one of his idols. That would be kind of weird, wouldn't it?

What if PJ plays the same setlist every night? Now THAT would be a first-time-ever!!! LMAO!

It was amazing last night. One of the top 5 shows I have ever seen. Didn't leave the stage till 11:45 shattering the 11 pm curfew.

I saw two 3 hour plus Bruce shows in a week. I've seen 2 three hour plus shows by PJ out of 48 shows. I can't wait to see what PJ pulls out for these.

That would be nice to see (The Price You Pay) - I might have seen it on the 1980 tour, but I can't really remember!
Regarding PJ, they don't have as extensive catalog as Bruce (yet!) so they don't have as many 'haven't been played since xxxx' songs yet, but I'm sure they will get there.

Hey philly people and everyone who will go to philly for the PJ shows:

I envy your guts, in a good way. Did any of you know that the day after John Lennon was killed, Springsteen put up an amazing show at the wachovia?

"One of the most memorable performances came on the night of December 9, 1980. After learning of the assassination of John Lennon following a performance there the night before, Bruce Springsteen opened the show with a statement regarding Lennon and said "it’s a hard thing to come out and play but there’s just nothing else you can do." With members of the E Street Band in tears, Springsteen and his band put on 34-song marathon which ended nearly 3 and 1/2 hours later with a scorching version of Twist and Shout."

Have fun! Fuck the phillies (I hope they win the WS), go see PJ!!!

I didn't realize this until just now, but Springsteen's first arena show he headlined was at the Spectrum almost 33 years ago - October 25, 1976.

No wonder he put on a helluva show last night.

    Great set Bruuuuuuuuce!!!!

Wish I could have been there!

Anyways, I really doubt PJ will put up those numbers, but then again...they are playing 4 shows.

PJ has played 3 hour+ shows only a handful of times. Bruce does it at least 25% of the time.

I hope PJ blows the roof of the fuckin' place!!

    By the way...F Philly!

My one and only Springsteen show was at Giant's Stadium - the final show there. It was a brilliant performance and I'm only a casual Springsteen fan. After seeing Pearl Jam rip the roof off at LA3 and LA4 it was a great follow up. Unfortunately my next night was KISS at MSG and they sucked ball - spectacular, but missing the heart and soul of the PJ and BS shows. Stanley is an idiot.

Bruce played Born in the USA in its entirety and it was excellent - one of the albums that really changed my view of music in the 80s when i was in high school. It intorduced me to The River, Darkness and other brilliant works from Springsteen. What was really good was how some of the songs were (only) slightly different in tempo or arrangement from the album - "Downbound Train" was probably the highlight from the album on the night - so full of emotion and dispair (I'm sure we've all been there). But then again, No Surrender and Bobby Jean rocked about as hard as Born To Run. I just could not stop thinking of Regan and his misreading of the song Born In The USA during its performance. The show will go down as one of the best I have seen. I'm converted.

After seeing the two acts within a few days of each other, I feel they are both the best at what they do - some similarities, some differences but the same integrity. Maybe Bruce and The E-Street Band is at a place today where PJ will be in 20 or so years. Whatever the comparisons, I think both bands give 100% and fire the belly of their audiences. I felt the same love and comraderie in both crowds and the same admiration and respect for the audience from the performers. To see parents with their kids at the shows - and even grandparents at the Springsteen show, I get the feeling both acts cross over the generation gaps and are held in such high regard by their fans, that passing the love onto their kids is a special thing. None of this I felt at KISS who I feel should give up. Having said that - I'm looking forward to Ace Frehley's solo tour of Australia.

As to how can PJ top his Spectrum shows, I really don't think they have to. They just have to go out and perform to their usual standard and everyone will leave happy. We are fans of one of the best band on the face of the earth - let's be happy with that.

Quote of the year right there! Thank you! That interview pissed me off where he said something about "I drink like there's a faucet over my head and smoke like a chimney. It it's a challenge, here's what I'm gonna do to make it even harder." Pair that with the part in the last DVD where he's holding a lit cigarette saying "I wish I could find the magical cure for my throat" or whatever. And Ed thinks Bush voters were stupid...

Maybe Bruce will come out for the encores on 10-31 and blast through a few songs with the band, that will help top that setlist

If PJ has a set similar to LA 4 that might top bruce

I know that not everyone here is a huge Springsteen fan, but you have to respect the show he put on for his final night at the Spectrum - three hours, twenty minutes of gloves-off straight up rockin' and rollin.'

Here's the whole setlist - which, by the way, included Born in the USA in full. The challenge has been issued to PJ, here's hoping they blow the E-Street Band out of the water :)

he will be at MSG on 10/29, then doesn't play until 11/2 (in DC)...so it's conceivable that this could happen
  • 15 minutes of Kitty's Back :o That is incredible. I have seen Bruce 10 times and he never disappoints but these set lists are something to behold.

[quote="The FixerI was at the spectrum for 3 of the 4 Springsteen shows. Kitty's Back was almost 15 minutes. PJ does have big shoes to fill...I hope EV was there to witness the last show. Crowd was amazing.[/quote]

  • well, i've loved the boss since the mid 70s. but i gotta say that for the last 10 years or so, his 3-hour shows include about 40 minutes of one-note guitar strums, one-word shouts that go on for a couple of minutes, and him running the length of the stage slapping hands but not singing at all. i'm NOT putting him down ... i'm just sayin' ...

show length seems like an arbitrary measure of how great a show is. the philly set list says more about the show's quality.
    Give way to nature ...
