Besides the music what's the most crucial element of a show?

Sound Quality. Actually was at a Def Leppard show that sounded AWFUL -- and then, they turned it UP, and it was just garbage noise at that point. Am spoiled with Greatful Dead, James Taylor and KISS -- all of whom have phenomenal sound engineers and PA systems that are just amazing. Not sure, I think the Dead are the only concert that's actually pumped out in STEREO! May be everyone these days.... Blue Man Group, whoa!

PJ is great, but I find Stone gets lost a lot, not a lot of definition on his parts. Not sure I've ever clearly heard Ed's guitar when all 3 of them are shredding -- which I think is kinda the point.

Then, the Band's Energy/Interest/Attitude -- which really is just the music. Love being close, love rare tunes, love hot chicks, love the aroma, love it all -- but after the music itself is the band's attitude....

    And Covers. Just dig 'em....

Here's something I noticed over my 3-show tour. At OLF I knew I'd get greatest hits set and so really enjoyed a few other tunes -- Lowlight, IMT, plus the two new tunes and covers. But when some songs came on, I was already waiting for the next one, like I'm on the boards at home going, "C'mon, what will they play next." I found myself doing that -- and i would stop.

"Hey, this is really a great tune I've heard a gazillion times, but they're shredding this right now! Enjoy!" I mean most songs I want to hear a gazillion times, yes even evenflow and YL, but others....

And then at LA2, with a first timer next to me, vicariously experiencing it all fresh and new was AWESOME.
But still -- at SD I fell back on "sigh, SH again... yep, here's GTF..." Dude I'm with was all, "Ack, DTE AGAIN!"

So I've decided that now I will LEARN all the words to GTF [edit: laughs that someone else above already listed G2F!], it really is an awesome song, I just have seen it at EVERY SHOW, it's my "every show" song and never really dug it to begin with, but now it's grown on me. Which I hope means I won't have to hear it next tour, but I'll be ready for it!

Sieze the moment, enjoy every note and nuance - and that's where I wound up for the last hour of San Diego!

    But SH? meh...
    [sic] happens
  • not having to pee. lol!
    this is really important..!!!
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
  • there is really only one true answer.......the most crucial thing is the mood of the band!....are they having a good day?

When they are extra playful and smiling/joking more than usual and enjoying the night...the shows are always soooooo much better IMO.

Ok, honestly, being able to see. That is a requirement. That's about equal to the music. Without being able to see, being there is the same as being in the car listening to a bootleg. Actually worse. Once, I was so far back on the floor, I couldn't see. All I saw was the tops of the bandmember's heads. Just their hair. That was not good. Some people may have been satisfied with just that but I wasn't. Those were bad seats, and I had just an ok time when you weigh the nights highs and the other frustrations together. I don't want to turn this into a ticketing, seat assignment discussion. All I'll say is that being able to see is just as important as being able to hear.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

    Yes. Oatmeal raisin please.

  • - the setlist?
    - the energy/participation of the crowd?
    - how close your seats are?
    - the merchandise?
    - the type of venue?
    - special guests?
    - how much weed is being passed around?
    - something else?

    For me....

    - Setlist means everything
    - Crowd energy means a lot
    - I'm usually happy with my tenclub seats.
    - Merchandise means NOTHING.
    - Type of venue means a little. I like things all nice and close....like the Spectrum!
    - Depends on the guest. I loved Ace Frehley last year but always hate when Ben Harper takes the stage.
    - Don't have to worry about what's being passed around because they day I show up to a PJ concert without any weed is the day I die.

  • All ridiculous responses. The truthful answer is the ease of getting out of the parking lot when the show is over.

What? That's the most ridiculous response of them all!

This is so true. Why don't hot chicks in general dig on some PJ. (Exception made for Evergreen...schwing) I think it has to do with the fact that most hot chickens are less intelligent and more concerned with trends and material goods/success so that's why they click their pretty little shoes into DMB and KOL shows. PJ has deeper meanings and the songs are a lot more intricate and meaningful and that type of stuff makes Barbie's head hurt. I suggest if you want more eye candy at the show you do what I do... bring a beautiful chicken like I did. I did my part in SD. Its up to you jammers. Make it happen. Go up to that coffee shop girl and ask her to be your date to the most epic show in rock. The rest of us wandering eye guys are counting on you sacking up... for once in your life.

Eddie wearing his white pants. :D

After that, energy, setlist and tempo. I really like it when the tempo is not so rushed. PJ nailed it perfectly in Hartford '08.

PJ women are the coolest women I know. They're laid back, don't have to dress like a slut at concerts and know how rock out! Do you guys really want up to dress like we're looking to get laid? We're there to rock out...and have a great time doing it. You're looking in the wrong place if you're looking for a PJ chick looking like eye-candy. It's not us!! But we're the coolest chicks you'll ever meet! :D

Totally agree. If I dress like a slut that means I can't totally rock. I'd be worried about my boobs falling out of my shirt or something. Good for you, bad for me. I can't drink too much because then I'd fall off of my slut shoes. If I'm there, I'm probably drinking and partying every bit as hard as a dude. And not caring what I look like while I do it. There is a time and a place for slutty clothes, a PJ concert isn't it. This is a jeans and t-shirt band, and we're most likely dressing like it.

Anyway, I'd say the thing that matters most to me is the people around me. If they are rocking or not. If I'm by some lame people, it just wrecks it.

You can still rock some hot gear and rock out. How about a tube top made out of a white pj tee with a little knot in the back keeping your jubblies on lock down. Flip flops are cool so you don't gotta wear high heals. Maybe a hot little summer dress? There aint mosh pits anymore so you don't gotta worry about the frat boys grabbing on you anymore so lets step it up ladies and look spicified. Come on.
