Nice place right around a lot of your hotels at 20th and Walnut. It's called the Irish Pub http://www.irishpubphilly.com/20thstreet/home.php
There's also a great head shop, Wonderland, at 21rst and Walnut

The Bards down the street is better and so is Black Sheep a few blocks away.

Here's my friend's restaurant/bar recomendations (Philly native and super cool chick)

    Ok! here we go!!

Restaurants (and a few bars mixed in)

Matyson- favorite restaurant in philly! A little more upscale. Probable need a reservation through open table. Awesome three course meal for around $50. mostly sustainable food. right off rittenhouse square… and a byo! http://www.matyson.com/
Continental Midtown- super hip Stephen Starr restaurant one block for your hotel. Cool décor. Lots of options for food and price. Good for big groups. I used to be a bartender there! http://www.continentalmidtown.com/
Lolita- amazing Mexican byo-tequila! incredible margarita flavors that they let you mix in with your own tequila like passionfruit elderflower or lime guava. try the carne asada… it will blow your mind no reservations but on a GREAT block so you can put your name in and get a cocktail here (http://www.apothecarylounge.com/indexApo.html) or grab a marg and snap a picture in the photobooth here (http://www.elvezrestaurant.com/ ) http://www.lolitabyob.com/lolita/
Rouge- Touted as the best burger in philly. Right on rittenhouse square. Fun vibe cause it’s right on the park but all the food other than the burger is so-so and kind of expensive (http://www.rouge98.com/ )
Grace Tavern- awesome low key bar/restaurant, lots of good beer on tap, great tunes on the speakers, casual but well prepared bar food, ask for a side of the blackened green beans. they aren’t on the menu but they are killer!
Reading Terminal Market- this is perfect for lunch or snacks! There are a bajillion different vendors ranging from thai food to organic produce to chocolate covered cookies to cheesesteaks. Really fun and festive but only open til 5 or 6. http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/
Royal Tavern- go-go-gadget gastropub! This is the south philly option. Great bar food. Also, next door to Dive bar where you can still smoke inside(http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-dive-bar-philadelphia ) and near to Ray's Happy Birthday Bar (http://www.thehappybirthdaybar.com/) Rays is amazing in an of itself, it's worth visiting just to see the (out of service) urinal trough that runs along the bottom of the bar. classy.
Little Petes- best diner in philly. Open 24-7. go there for a late night grilled cheese and watch the amazing show of post-bar antics. Obama even ate there when he came through Philly. http://www.zagat.com/Verticals/Property ... =8&R=71557

    Bars

As mentioned above- APO, The Dive, El Vez, Grace, The Dive, Ray’s
Barclay Prime’s library- This is actually a steakhouse right on rittenhouse square but if you want to feel super swanky, go the front library for a cocktail. Mahogany walls and scotch. http://www.barclayprime.com/
Drinker’s Pub- up beat, popular bar right off rittenhouse. Fun jukebox. Buy a 40 oz at the bar and then go get your picture taken with the cardboard cut out of elvis in the back! http://www.drinkerspub215.com/drinkerspub215/
The Khyber- Philly’s main rock bar. This has your name all over it, Sandi. In old city. Shows every night. Cheap drinks. Nice bartenders. http://www.thekhyber.com/
Sugar Mom’s- in old city. beer and arcade games and awesome people. I have never had a bad time here. Ever. They even have pretty decent bar food if you need a late night nibble. http://citypaper.net/food/restaurants/i ... gar+Mom's#
Eulogy- tiny little beer bar in old city on a pretty popular block. Every imaginable beer in the world. Literally. http://eulogybar.server101.com/

    Other good things to know

Avoid south street at all costs. I am serious. Over priced and trashy.
most every bar in the city supports the “City Wide Special”. It’s a shot of whiskey and a PBR for around $5. not a bad deal if you want to go nuts.
    HAVE FUN!!!
