then how can you see the show, mun? whoa, glow in the dark guitar's & drum kits. the guy's would come up on stage with glow in the dark costumes. that would so rock. rock hard! yeah!
I went to the first 8 shows in 06. The first night in Toronto they used those for most of the show, it was terrible. Glad they toned it down after that and used them sparingly.
"If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph: The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music." KV Jr.
As someone had mentioned the higher the production costs the higher the ticket prices plus most bands play the same songs each show and it makes it easier for the lighting designers to program less looks. PJ's lighting designer does a great job considering she gets a setlist right before the show and has to wing a lot of the looks.
And... the more gear, the more trucking, more electricity therefore the enviro footprint gets worse yadda yadda...
1) I thought the lasers in Toronto for Severed Hand in 06 were cool, but I can see taking them out if they cost $5K per week.
2) Lights, properly done can add something cool to certain bands. I'm a huge NIN fan (at least equal to my liking of Pearl Jam), and I love what NIN does with their visuals. Even for their stripped down shows the lights are good. Check out these videos of their light guy (he loves his job): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1djLMZa ... re=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luSVGWxXx9M
3) For Pearl Jam I don't need lights. Its just a very different vibe. Even for NIN I don't NEED lights, but I like what they do.
edit - and whatever a band does in terms of visuals they've got to back it up with good music. All the lights in the world aren't going to hide the shittiness of a band.

I enjoyed the U2 360 show, but I'll bet they'd kill to be able to mix the set up
every night. The more complicated the production the harder it is to be
spontaneous.
The only band that i can say was justified to have a light show or screens is PINK FUCKING FLOYD every body else should just give it up ,i say fuck the lights but turn up the volume
As this latest tour has shown, it's all about the music with Pearl Jam. Their shows have been kick ass almost from the beginning.
That said, other than a strobe during RVM, a disco ball during Wishlist and Ed occasionally reflecting a spotlight off his guitar, they pretty much do nothing in the way of a light show. I mean, it's about as low tech as it gets.
Personally, I don't mind geeking out over some lasers now and then and I also like some of the "story board" videos that other bands (Rush  , U2, etc.) use. I wouldn't want Pearl Jam to ever become "choreographed," but what would some lasers hurt? Yay? or nay?
You're saying all this because you live in Vegas. Vegas people always want more lights!
I have no patience for bad music and stupid people...

They used laser lights in Chicago 06. but thing like that are great for casual fans. For instance at that Chicago show, the girl i took with me was enthralled with the laser lights and didn't really care about the music. Those effects enhance the show for someone who doesn't know every song
"All I Ever Knew" available now in print and digital formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks.
They actually have a pretty good light setup, its better from the floor then the lower bowl, and it really looks best in an arena but its actually pretty good for minimalist set up.

I've never liked the strobes...for the simple fact that my wife has epilepsy
Although I like the fact that you can pretty much guess when they will use it...like in RVM as someone else said or when it gets to the end bit of Go and I can turn to her and shout "cover your eyes!!!"

I've just witnessed PJ at LA3 and LA4, then Springsteen at Giants and then KISS at MSG. Three shows had quite restrained light shows that came second to the music or, more accurately, fitted in with it and complimented it, and one needed a whole nuclear powerplant to run the fucking thing and the show relied on it (KISS).
PJ and Springsteen blew KISS off the planet with their integrity, quality of songs and stage presence. KISS relied on the lights and pyros to entertain (I wasn't impressed and was happy to see the end of the show). Springsteen had a lot of video screens, but this enhanced the show for those who were miles from the stage, and even then, what they did with it was quite beautiful and often moving.
Give me Pearl Jam with their current light and stage set up anyday. It's about the music and I think they have the balance perfect.
yeah - what is the band's "policy" when it comes to screens? in Toronto at the Amp they used them (I assume they are the venues). They didn't use them in Vancouver., I remember thinking in T.O., I guess they have decided to let the people in the back actually see.
mjb
believe they were used in 06 - anyone remember where?
In Cleveland, they were used in World Wide Suicide, Severed Hand, and Inside Job if I'm not mistaken. They used the strobe during Rearviewmirror last year at VA Beach....I like a lil bit of a light show myself.

I am an epileptic as well, so whilst I cope with strobes, I too have the 'cover your eyes' moment.
I love the fact that they are such a good band that they don't need to enhance the performance with lights, plus is certainly bumps up the carbon neutral costs.
I dunno, sometimes lasers have their place, and can look awesome, but I go to a gig for the music!

But do bring back the bat.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me...
i almost had a seizure at the end of RVM. may have been induced by other things.

I trust their judgement as to what they decide to add in terms of enhancing the experience.
I would have no problem with a light show if that's what they decide to go with....
