Could Pearl Jam use a LIGHT SHOW??

As this latest tour has shown, it's all about the music with Pearl Jam. Their shows have been kick ass almost from the beginning.

That said, other than a strobe during RVM, a disco ball during Wishlist and Ed occasionally reflecting a spotlight off his guitar, they pretty much do nothing in the way of a light show. I mean, it's about as low tech as it gets.

Personally, I don't mind geeking out over some lasers now and then  and I also like some of the "story board" videos that other bands (Rush  , U2, etc.) use. I wouldn't want Pearl Jam to ever become "choreographed," but what would some lasers hurt? Yay? or nay?
If I had known then what I know now...

Don't think that's happening anytime soon at least according to Stone:

About the possibility of a Pearl Jam concert “production” (a la U2): Stone mentions that he saw Nine Inch Nails “big production, incredible, huge – dramatic presentation….[Asked by the DJ When going to someone else’s show do you think “We should try that?] “I think you should try everything once. Didn't they have a pretty cool strobe effect for "You Are" during the 2003 tour? That's good enough for me!

They had the lasers at the two Toronto shows that year. I still don't get the people that said they were distracted by the lasers.

Thanks for posting this....I´m glad they feel that way about the shows, a huge production doesn´t suit them imo.....It´s all about the music....

Whenever I feel I want to see an elaborate stage show I´ll watch Pink Floyd´s Pulse DVD.....
The music ain´t too shabby either ;)

I could see Stone getting stuck in a pod as well (which, actually happened to U2!!!)

Why I don't like excessive lights... Then the lighting people become bandmembers. Their instruments being the lights. They have to be in complete synch. That means the band cant be too loose with the music, and the songs can't vary. Because the light people would be taken off guard. Led Zeppelin always varied and jammed out the songs in different ways. The lights were sparse. This gave the band freedom. I'd rather have the band and the music stand on it's own and speak for itself. Letting the light show take a back seat.

I'd give my left nut to see what Chris Kuroda (phish lighting designer) could do at a Pearl Jam show. I think good lights only add to the show and make the music even more intense

I would never want an "incredible, huge, dramatic presentation." Maybe just a little somethin'...

True....but tell me people don't like the strobes in RVM.

True - I, too, would never want it to get choreographed. But, dammit, I like lasers!! Just do 'em in a sloppy, Pearljamish fashion.:lol:

OH MY! That is what I've been saying for about 5-10 years now. IMHO, rock concerts are just an extension of the good ol' campfire sing-along! I'd prefer they stay more toward that, campfire, than Broadway.

Said the same thing in my LA2 write-up, saw the U2 extravaganza and just thought, "That is VERY cool, but it's not a rock concert...." If I don't need projection screens/closed circuit tv, I'm happy. No set changes, no dancers, no special effects beyond lightin' em up.

Funny though, EV at least had a fog machine! Oh right, we really don't need more smoke at a PJ show....

moe isn't touring as much as they once used to, and I heard there may be some attitudes between one another, but I'm not positive on that part, so he jumped over to UM. Even if you don't like them, go see UM just for the lights, they are top notch, you tube their NYE show last year for some examples. Reagan and some other guy have been switching for moe. recently, and whoever did moe.down was great, best lights i've seen by them in a while, not over the top or in your face, very good changes, etc... I hope he stays with them for a while
