Those seats that year were done in blocks so the earlier you arrived the better.
This wasn't necessarily true. You were assigned to a certain block by seniority, so there was no way to change that.
Within the block, it was first come first serve, but getting there early didn't quite mean a better seat. They handed out the tickets in order (row 1, seat 1; row 1 seat 2, seat 3, 4 etc ...) ... So the first people in line got tickets to the far right of the stage. If you showed up 15 minutes later, you got front row center. If you showed up half an hour later, maybe you got second row center ... which to me is better than front row to the extreme right.
I remember laughing at people who basically camped out at the venue to pick up their tickets that year, because it really was a crapshoot as to where you were within a given row.
