Fruit and Veggie Diet

So I'm doing a diet where for one week I can only eat fruit and veggies. I did some research and mainly the diets out there are just fruit and for 30 days. I figured it couldn't hurt to add veggies plus I know I'll be so sick of fruit. I also know I wouldn't last more than a week. I'm on my second day and already I'm dying for food. But honetsly, it's all in my head. I feel physically pretty good! I normally eat fast food and junk daily. Plus Soda. This is to help get away from that...

Any suggestions? Anyone do a diet like this before?

I did a similar diet and it worked. I dropped agout 30 pounds in one month. I was excercising alot as well. Just try to keep yourself busy is the key. I ate fruit for breakfast and lunch and then veggies for a mid afternoon snack and dinner. Breakfast is most important as it gets your metabolism going. That's why the mid afternoon snack won't hurt because your metabolism is going and you're not hungry. Breakfast and keeping busy are the keys!

It's definitely all in the head. I did the Master Cleanse for 18 days last year(which I'm going to do again), and it's a great test of discipline more than anything. Actually got a lot of good tips from peeps around here too. But remember, diets - especially only for a week - is a very small change. The long term life changes are the ones that actually show beneficial changes. For instance, all I drink now is water with an occasional Gatorade, eat chicken and salads during the week, and have kept off 15 pounds. I did the cleanse and lost more that amount in those 18 days. A quick diet like your suggesting will drop the weight, but definitely not keep it off.

please do not do this any great length of time. of course you feel good right now; you were eating crap. however, as great as fruit and veggies are for you...you also need fat and protein! it doesn't have to be from a meat source, but you do need it! i think anything short-term really won't do much harm, but do realize...when you go back to eting nomrally, you may not keep off all the weight-loss.

sorry, don't mean to be a debbie-downer. it's a good way to kick-start weight-loss, but find more balanced way to do so long-term, and the benefits/rewards will stay with you.

    good luck!

I appreciate all the feedback. It's good from people that have done it.

About the protein, I'm definitely adding that to my intake. Edamame has it and I have a fruit shake with protein. I have to do it short term because I want to go back to eating normally. I mainly call it a diet because it's my daily eating....I'm not really doing it to lose weight as the main goal. That's just a benefit. I haven't been able to drop these certain 5 pounds with any kind of exercise because of my addiction to junk. I am not kidding..I have chocolate and soda daily. It's a very hard habit to break. A strict diet with terms where what I can eat is black and white, no gray area is what I need to jump start eating healthier overall. Does that make sense? Am I delusional?

About the Master Cleanse...I've tasted the mix prescribed. How did you drink only that for so long? I'm seriously in awe with your willpower. I do not think I could do it for one day.

    good.
(fats are important too, but given it's just a week, again..i think you'll be just fine)
and yes, it makes total sense.
it is very difficult to break bad habits, and doing something regimented is a great way to go about it.

and idk how anyone goes without eating - not by choice anyway, even just a day!

For the spring solstice I went on a 4-day fruit fast. I ate only fruit, which I mostly turned into juice with my uber-cool juicer, and then water. I definitely recommend drinking lots of water. Even with eating a lot of fruit I felt parched. 4 days was excessive.

For the summer solstice I decided to do a 3 day fruit fast, and I lasted 2 days.

For the autumn solstice I decided to do a 3 day fruit fast, and I lasted 1/2 day. The coffee withdrawal this time was extremely painful and longer than usual. I actually stoped drinking coffee the day before so that I would be good to go during the solstice, but my face still hurt well into the next day. I think I'm going to celebrate the winter solstice with a lot of chocolate.

The first time I completed a fruit fast was winter solstice 2007. It was for 2 days, and I felt really good afterwards. I don't know how people can complete 30-day fruit fasts as I was feeling pretty weak after 4 days. When I started to eat again my heart pumped *loudly* It was like it all of a sudden had energy to pump it, but it concerned me how I could feel the heart beat. Not a palpitation, but just a strong beat. Definitely pace yourself getting back to a non-fast-like diet when you are done.

I definitely notice I"m more joyful the more fruit I eat. When I was on the 4-day fruit fast I didn't include TV or music or computers, and only phone calls from my twin. I knitted, and needlepointed, and read a lot. It was a joyful experience. A great way to celebrate the change in seasons by slowing down my life and just flowing with the sounds of the world and a book about food aphrodisiacs (Memoir of the Senses by Isabelle Allende.) :D

  • Can I just point out the process by which fat is lost? Essentially you need to keep insulin release low and steady. The reason for this is that when insulin is released it basically tells the body to stop using body fat for fuel, and to start storing the calories you consume, in fat cells (this can include carbohydrates and proteins, as well as fat itself). Fat and protein have a fairly insignificant effect on insulin release, where as carbohydrates to varying degrees, have a huge effect. Fruits in particular, are high in sugar which would provoke a larger insulin release, and thus limit the times your body is physically able to access its fat stores. Protein and fat blunt the release of insulin, so are your best friends (along with low G.I vegtables) if you want to lose weight.

This is of course not to say that you can't lose 'weight' on a diet like this, but there is a big difference between losing body fat, and losing body 'weight'. For example, you could lose say 2lbs of weight in a week, but two-thirds of that weight loss could be made from stored water and muscle. See the body needs protein for various functions and if you don't get adequate amounts (which you wouldn't on a strict fruit/veg diet) the body will start using your muscles as its source. So if you lose mostly muscle and water, you could potentially still be left with flab.

I don't know if any of the above is useful at all, but I felt like chiming in

It isn't that bad. I did less maple syrup than that preferred. It's all about being mentally prepared, and working your way into the Cleanse. By the 11th day I started to become extremely agitated very easily.

seriously. i love fruit. i eat a ton of it on any given day. but to eat fruit and only fruit? yikes! i don't think i could do that. or i could, but i think i would be a very miserable bitch. i also can see no *purpose* to it except to torment myself, so yes...not something i would choose to do. however, i do agree with the more healthy choices = a much happier you. i know i feel so much better when i eat well.

I started it for eating healthier but when I got home last night every bit of food in my house looked DELICIOUS. I even thought a Saltine would be wonderful. I had gotten to the point before this where I never wanted to eat anything but junk. I'm definitely seeing this as a positive.

I agree with the protein concerns. I am doing my best to get a good intake of it. Powders work.

The hardest thing here is, Ms. Haiku said, the caffeine. I don't drink coffee, I drink soda. For the caffeine. Every day. Right now I am getting a serious caffeine headache. Caffeine and chocolate are my really bad cravings that I usually give in to! It's so hard! But I'm going to take some aspirin...and go get some cantaloupe!

Jearlpam...man, still I am not sure I could do a liquid diet. I need to chew! :)

i'm imagining a dancing saltine, taunting you...and you fiending like a junkie.

sorry to laugh at your pain. as to your caffeine issues, ouch! that is a definite side-effect. it is best to wean yourself off caffeine, not go cold turkey...due to the intense headaches. normally i would suggest adding more and more decaf coffee mixed with regular, or in your case....mix caffeine-free soda with non. but given that you ae going the 'all or nothing' route...i will simply wish you well! it WILL pass, and a lot quicker than you think. and, in time, still ditch the soda - bad news, but the chocolate, if you eat at least 60% cocoa dark chocolate, is good for you...in moderation. so buy the ghiradelli individually wrapped dark chocolate. that's wh i do. balance is key to all things.

let us know how it goes....stay aay from the saltines! :P...don't kill anyone and good luck! :D

I did warn people that I might be seriously looney by Friday. hmmm when you said that I imagined the salty goodness! The only way I've gotten through the caffeine fix before in my endless short attempts to quit soda was a good ibuprophen. I love dark chocolate.

How do you get past the stuff that's really bad that you really like though? Is it sheer will to be a healthier person? I find it hard to refuse the milky way or peanut m&ms when they're calling my name....or the jack in the box tacos at midnight!! :)

Thank you for the luck! It's only day 2....

Wow! Congrats on quitting smoking! I know that is not easy by any means and the temptation never goes away. I don't smoke but my mom did for years and quit too. I do appreciate your advice...I don't think you're preaching. Even if you were though, this thread is really helping me keep my motivation! My boyfriend and I are doing it together but we do tease each other to see who will break first. It's a reverse motivation. He kept talking about IN N out last night because he knows I'm weaker when it comes to food cravings! Cruel but just to prove I can hang, I didn't give in.

This thread is also helping me get through my workday. I used to love it(my work) but lately I'm bored!

    thanks!
and my main point was....it DOES go away. really. thus why i said, if you stick with it, you WILL get past it, if you want to. that really is IT, for breaking any bad habit. as you said earlier, it is simply *sheer will* to WANT to eat healthier, to not smoke, to exercise...whatever it is you want to break and/or improve.

and yes, good motivator! tho most definitely, women are overall worse with sticking with diets then men. woomen are more emotional eaters, suffer more intense cravings....so yea....kick his ass and win!

and i hear ya on the work front. i like my job, but it is filled with these posckets of time with next to nooottttthhhhhiiiiinnnggggg to do. i seriously could NOT work at this job without this board. and you bet, i appreciate the convo too! :D

funny too, as to motivators...i actually seem to do better w/o competition, just do thing ssolely for myself, pretty quietly. when i announce my intentions too often, i usually fail. if i just make up my mind and DO IT...make my own plan, i do better. i read recently that it IS quite common too, the more people you tell can sometimes backfire, you don';t stick with it. not to say *you*.....b/c obviously there is much evidence for group cheering being VERY helpful! good luck!

I do hope the temptations go away somewhat but my mom said every time she smells a cigarette, or the smoke I guess it makes her want one. That's what I meant by that temptation not going away.

You're totally right for me too, the more people I tell, I tend to fail. I think it's just the intrinsic motivator that works no matter the amount of people you tell. If it's not for yourself, then you'll fail. Period. I just tend to not be motivated for more than a few days on anything, whether it's budgeting(I'm a shopper at heart), eating better,...etc. This thread is helping though, like no person can because there isn't really anyone I can talk to about it as much during the day. Yeah my boyfriend, but not so much since we don't work together. So thanks for that too decides!

So thanks for that too decides!

well as ever, everyone is different. i DO know smokers who are tempted...forever. but most i know are not. me, i smell a cigarette, 9x outta 10, i want to vomit - i am repulsed and cannot imagine i walked around smelling like that. tho sure, there are times i just think of the *idea* of smoking, the enjoyment i got from it....but still, not really temptation. also, for me anyway, i find the longer i am "successful" the less apt i am to fuck it up. i know just how much i loved smoking, and how utterly hooked i was, and how fucking hard it was to quit..so yea, motivators to tel my brain, i don't miss it. so i don't.

as to the motivation - yes, it was an interesting article..sorry i can't remember where i read it. but basically the synopsis was, the more people you tell about your plan to quit/exercise/eat healthier...the less apt you are to do so, simply b/c for some reason the act of "telling" about it, in some sense gives a feeling of satisfaction/accomplihment, like you almost did it already. i've also read about the big differences between men/women in regards to such things too. of course, they are generalities, always exceptions...but i do find a lot of truth in em.

bottomline, you GOT it....motivation must come from within, and you absolutely have to want it!
i discussed your fruit and veg diet with mr. dream over dinner....pretty much summed up that yea...i don't think i could ever do it. i want to improve my health/longevity and i do want to lose weight, but...not that way. we all have to find what works! i wish you much success in the battle against evil junk food! and hey,. it's only one week...you can do it! then, share your success in keeping off the junk. 8-)

I haven't read through this entire thread, but the thing with diets, once they are over you go back to your old habits. Do you plan on living on just fruits/veggies forever? If not then why bother? Find a good mix of smaller portions of foods you like (and get rid of all soda), and add in some exercise. You should start losing weight AND be able to keep it off by maintaining the new lifestyle.

Thank you. But, losing weight isn't my main goal. It's just a jump start to healthier eating habits. I could stand to lose a good 10 lbs but I'm not dying to do it. I'm ok with how I am. I just want to be healthier.

    Speaking of bananas:

it only took me about 35 years to realize that bananas and apples are uber-drugs. Oh, man! What good chemicals in those little packages. The texture of a banana makes me gag sometimes, and apples are too hard on my teeth sometimes. That's probably why it took so long to realize this fact.

Now that I know, though, I eat a banana before I run, and apples when I'm ready to challenge my teeth :D

as mentioned earlier, i eat a ton of fruit, daily. this week my produce has been utterly fantastic!
you know how it goes, can be hit or miss at times. but man, this week, jackpot! bananas have been great and clemtines back in season - yummm! and they are fab! berries were/are good, tho nothing outstanding. but yes, i've missed my clementines over the summer, tho enjoyed red grapes instead.

oooooooooooo and last night hubby made a kick-ass stirfry with broccoli that was top notch, red and green peppers and yellow squash (and yes, shrimp, but you ignore that part ;)) and . it was so YUMMM!

and i did NOT drink any wine so yay me! :D

Hehe a little red wine would be ok... ;)

Hmm you know my fruit has been good this week too. But as far as apples, I'm weird and I'll only buy pink lady or honey crisp. They don't get mealy. I hate mealy apples!!!!

I'm very happy clementines are back in season. It seems like price-wise melons never had a season!!

when you go thru as much wine as i do, no it's not. it's not a 'problem' in any sense, except for my wallet and probsbly my waistline. thus, i want to cut back. like you, i too need to set myself stringent parameters when i desire to change, thus, no weeknight drinking. also, i have just way too many risk factors for breast cancer, and there has been too much of a correlation with alcohol/breast cancer, so yes....i want to avoid that as much as possible!

mealy apples suck. so does mealy bananas! i like granny smith apples. but i am weird, i don't ever just bite into and eat an apple; i prefer to slice mine up.

clementines are just adorable and uber-tasty gifts from other nature. i was so psyched to buy a bag on sunday! i think i had a thread dedicated to them not long ago(hate that you can't search yours, or othr member's, thread titles anymore).

Clementines are the baby oranges, right? They are very convenient and easy to peel. Definitely a must for those of us trying to add more fruit eating to our lifestyles.

You eat baby oranges? How do you live with yourself?

I tried to get into Wine for a while. I like whites. Especially Rieslings! I can't get used to drinking anything warm. I won't even drink my water if it's room temp. Maybe one day.

I only eat sliced apples. I won't bite it. I'm weird like that too... I don't like meat on the bone either but that's not for this thread.

clementines are soooooo good and I can eat too many in a day. I would bring them to work and just line 'em all up on my cube wall. Everyone eats them with me. The way you and I go back and forth we should probably PM!

I'm inhaling grapes right now! yum!
