Just would like to add that this is old news. Doctors told me not to let my children go to bed with a bottle over 20 years ago.
seriously. i am 40 and i remember the little girl next door and her baby teeth were all rotted (tho not to the point of needing to be replaced, or maybe they just didn't do it back then) b/c she went to bed each night with a milk bottle. poor kid had to go thru her early toddler years with terrible teeth until her new teeth came in.
.
The same thing happened to my Mom's friend's son (early '80s). They put him to bed with his bottle each night and his teeth rotted. I believe they ended up pulling two of them.
There's no difference between sending your kid to bed with a mouthful of candy or a bottle.
Ummmm...don't get me wrong, cavities aren't a good thing. But that he can't live with them for 3-4 years??
Granted I'm not a dentist, but that just seems silly to me.
Also how do they know it was milk that caused it?
he was still drinking a bottle to go to sleep.something about the proteins in the milk break up teeth. he is not having them anymore, now its almost 2am and he wont go to sleep but im not gonna give in. i dont think it would be healthy for him to have rotting teeth until he is 5.
You are supposed to pull the bottle out of their mouth as soon as they fall asleep to prevent this. Of course the milk will cause cavities. Its in every parenting book out there. You can dilute the milk with 3/4 water also.
Get em a Body Bag Yeeeeeaaaaa!
Sweep the Leg Johnny.
Above is a 5 minute story from the show Inside Edition 11 years ago. [Edit: Oops! It's "Hard Copy."] It makes a lot of gross points about bovine milk.
I'm vegetarian, but not vegan as I allow organic cheese in my diet. In cheese, the lactose (milk sugar) is no longer present. I had gone 7 years without drinking milk, and decided to taste it again: It was salty, bitter body fluid! It's disgusting to know that I used to enjoy the substance simply because I was habituated to it.
Do your own research about the protein myth. Humans only need 30-35 grams per day. Excessive amounts cause osteoporosis: Protein is acidic. To balance the body's pH, calcium is leeched out of bone (calcium is alkaline.) Taking calcium supplements doesn't help much. Most of it is is blocked by the intestinal wall to prevent nearby organs calcifying.
i edited it in my last post, but just to correlate:
btw - just as an aside, i just checked out the nutrition panel on whole milk and indeed, clearly, it states: 1 cup of milk contains 12 grams of sugar. yes, they are naturally occurring sugars within the milk, but indeed, SUGAR. i had always known milk contained sugar, but i saw someone post that it does not. it does. many, many naturl foods contain sugars. yes, they are different from table sugar, but sugar none the less...and letting anything with any sugar sit on your teeth overnight, night after night, no brushing...you bet....can most definitely cause cavities.
i said it doesnt contain sugar... it doesnt.. it contains lactose... which is not sugar.
its akin to saying "hey dont eat those 3 oranges or your teeth will rot out"
oranges, which contain far more 'sugar'.. or fructose.. are definitely worse for the teeth than milk
a little perspective here please... babies and young kids need milk... end of fucking story.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

There is no conclusive proof of this. This theory was suggested because they found people on lower-carb/higher protein diets had higher levels of calcium in their urine. However research has shown that protein increases the absorbtion of calcium from the gut, and thus they excrete more.

maybe i missed it, but wouldn't a two year old still be working with baby teeth?
I can think of worse things people are eating than milk. Milk is arguably bad for you.
milk is only arguably bad and not bad b/c the FDA is owned by the meat industry...check out Marion Nestle's book Food Politics...she worked for the FDA and quit b/c it sucked.
maybe i missed it, but wouldn't a two year old still be working with baby teeth?
yep, baby teeth.
also, for dunky: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/dair ... ducts/71/2
The good: This food is a good source of Protein, Vitamin B12 and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Vitamin D, Riboflavin and Calcium.
The bad: This food is high in Saturated Fat, and a large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.
also for those interested...since i mentioned earlier about the whole milk vs. 2% or skim... http://pediatrics.about.com/od/milk/i/05_milk_2.htm
According to the AAP recommendations, if your toddler isn't going to continue breastfeeding, you should switch her to whole milk once she is 12 months old. Next, switch to skim or low fat milk at age 2 years.
you need to qualify your statement. MILK itself did not cause it - GIVING HIM A BOTTLE TO GO TO BED WITH is what caused it. we brush our 3 year old and 18 month old's teeth before they go to bed, after milk, for this exact reason.
no point in saying "parents, milk is bad". utter rubbish.
^THIS^
I am in the process of breaking our 2 year old of milk in a bottle at all, nevermind before bed for this very reason alone. Also switching her to 2%

I think milk is bad too. My parents were obsessed with milk when I was a kid. I was made to drink 3 whole glasses a day with each meal. I grew and developed really early, had a lot of weight problems as a kid, and have had lots of endrocrine problems. For the past few years, I've been thinking about all milk I drank in my early years, and I just have this feeling that some of these problems could be traced back to it.
But I agree with the others who have pointed out that the bottle before bed is probably the cause of the tooth problems.

So milk makes kids/people obese, not cookies and twinkies? So now thinking back, milk is the cause of all your problems...wow, this is getting ridiculous..

If it was whole milk, I could see it maybe causing a problem with weight, but not with the rest of what she was saying.
Wow this thread really pissed me off. It's not the milk that caused the cavities. It's the milk in the bottle to help the kid to go to sleep without brushing his teeth afterward. The only thing my kids are allowed to have after they brush their teeth is water. It doesn't cause cavities...

Than again, I'm no doctor.
Agreed, except I don't think whole milk causes weight problems. It reminds me of people who order super-sized burger/fries meals but opt for the diet soda....milk is good for you, most of the other shit people eat is not, and yet milk is to blame..let's get real..

Well first of all, milk has a lot of calories- even low fat milk. It's a pretty substantial drink! If you think about drinking 3 big glasses of milk a day, that's a lot of added calories even a kid doesn't need. But that's not my point. Cow milk contains natural and artificial hormones. Studies are starting to show that these hormones (also those found in processed soy products and meat products) might make girls develop earlier and also lead to many endocrine problems (not just diabetes, but reproductive hormone problems, which in turn can be linked to metabolic hormone problems) throughout life. Weight problems can also be the chicken or the egg in this situation. The female endocrine system is very delicate, it plays a big role in the body's overall systems. Today, I drink regular processed milk in very small amounts (like in coffee), and I try to avoid any meat that isn't hormone-free. I also avoid eating a lot of soy, which contains phytoestrogens and may throw off the body's balance.
I am definitely not the first person to suggest that hormones in processed milk and meat can interfere with girl's natural endocrine systems. People just didn't really think about it 20, 30 years ago. I didn't say that milk was the cause of "all my problems." But I do really think it played a role in many of the endocrine issues I have had throughout my life. And yes, my weight problems as a child were related to early puberty, as is common for many girls. I wasn't talking about obesity, I was talking about early puberty and associated weight gain. Please educate yourself before you downplay other people's medical problems. Women's health issues especially are still poorly understood, and it won't get any better if people are so quick to dismiss them.
I did not claim that "milk causes to be obese" or that nothing else does. I have a lot of opinions about obesity itself and its causes, but I'm not getting into that now. I wasn't even talking about obesity at all!

Is milk really that good for us? Why do calves stop drinking it before they are a year old? Why do humans stop taking their mothers' milk at such a young age?
We have been sold a bill of goods by the dairy industry and they have done a very good job convincing us that we need to drink milk. If you like it the same way you like a snickers bar or a ham sandwich, then great, but i don't see it as a necessity. All of the things we get from milk are available to us in other ways.
Another thing I've noticed is that when people are having health issues - especially digestion related, one of the first things they are told to do is eliminate dairy from their diets for 1 month and see what happens. I'm not a doctor (not even close) but in my mind there are too many reasons not to drink milk...and just so people don't accuse me of having some kind of hidden agenda, I owe a lot of what I had and did growing up to the dairy industry (travel, education, etc) as my dad is a senior executive at a company in the cheese business.
