The 50 States Food Thread

I thought this would be fun to try...if it doesn't catch on, oh well but...

Basically this is a thread dedicated to great food unique to your location. Amongst all us members here, surely all 50 states could be covered?

So go ahead, post what state you live in and a special food item or restaurant, etc anything...that is exceptional and can only be found in your neck of the woods.

I'll start it off for Michigan...

There's a place in Farmington Hills called Jaws, themed with movies playing and real live sharks swimming in shark tanks. They serve enormous hamburgers that you can barely finish even if you walk in starving.

http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/19/233434/r ... gton-Hills

Again, make sure whatever you post can ONLY be found in your state!

And also, feel free to add more than one thing to any given state if it's already been covered but you have another idea.

Copy/paste state list and add your contribution to keep it updated.

I'd recommend The Chimes if anyone is in the LSU area on a trip to Baton Rouge. As for New Orleans, damn near anywhere would be good... it's hard to find BAD food down there.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.
  • I love this place....

    http://whitefencefarm-il.com/

Its about 20 miles southwest of Chicago....

This place has the best fried chicken you have ever eaten......Yeah I realize chicken is chicken is chicken....

But its the BEST fried chicken you have ever eaten!!!!

They serve it family style, with potatoes, gravy, corn, coleslaw, cottage cheeese........

We go on Mothers Day...And there has to be 500-700 people sitting and eating at all times throughout the day.......Its amazing how busy this place is.....

    But its worth the trip....

Because it is the BEST fried chicken you have ever eaten!!!!
    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
  • The Thurman Cafe in Columbus, OH

Known for amazing, huge burgers. It's been on the food network a couple times, and some newspaper (I wanna say USA Today or NY Times) ranked it as 13th best burger in the country. Also, the wings and subs are absurdly big and good. Great atmosphere too, it's basically just a small little dive bar with great, great food

Awesome place for breakfast, have huge burgers, and their shakes are out of this world! Presidents (current and past) have been here, actors, athletes, etc.
Popular joint and damn near impossible to get in on a Saturday.

    For California:

Not the best, but very unique!

Oki Dog has locations on Fairfax, Sunset and Pico Blvd. in L.A. Their specialty is an Oki Dog, which consists of a flour tortilla, filled with 2 hotdogs, pastrami, chilli and cheese. It is obviously very unhealthy, but when you are stoned at 2am, it is pure bliss!

I just added Pizzeria Bianco. If you are ever in the Phoenix area, this is a must stop! Rated by many food critics as the best pizzeria in the country for many years...who would have thought a place like that would be in Phoenix?!!?
Anyways, you wait forever to get a table (sometimes up to 3 hours) but when you get your pizza you know why you waited!

best mexican takeout on long island:
    http://www.greencactusgrill.com/orderez ... mmary.aspx

it's a chain, but only on the island, owned by long islanders, started by a long island woman. :)

as to a GREAt local place to have a great mexican meal in the restaurant:
    poco loco's in roslyn.....fantastic!
    spanish-mexican: besitos.....roslyn and huntington.

other ethnicities i'd really have to think about as we have a million italian and chinese restaurants, and yet my fave happens to be not-local chains here. hahaha.

    Variety and food done well:

Mark's Kitchen in Takoma Park, Maryland

    http://www.markskitchen.com/

It's not easy to find great food, like off the chart in DC, and this isn't even in DC. It's about a block or two away from DC. Anyway, it is solidly good, and caters to vegans and omnivores with the same amount of skill. I LOVE their cappuccinos - it's like they use milk from a glass bottle. Very community oriented. 50% of the time when I ask for a medium rare burger do I get medium-rare as opposed to just medium. However, it's still the best within miles.

Ohio needs to be changed to Swenson's. The king of Ohio picked Swenson's as the best burger in the world. I've eaten at Thurman's in Columbus, and it's just not on Swenson's level.
