Pretty far. An uncle in Ireland had done one as a scholarly project, and he went back I think five or so generations. The WASP side of the family didn't go as far back, I think only to the great-grandparents. I was so excited to find out about my Portuguese great-grandmother. I had been hoping for an infusion of sunshine and spice in the otherwise kind of dull British/Irish blend. I guess Italian would have been too much to hope for... and I do so love the cuisine...
