Do yours have free run of the house?
  • unlost dogsunlost dogs Greater Boston Posts: 12,553
Yes, when we're home. When we're out the are gated in a way that they get the kitchen, hall, foyer and front porch room (in summer, no front porch room in winter). No free ranging upstairs, in the bathrooms, or the living or dining rooms when we're out. Mainly because Sweet Pea on occasion likes to carefully select a book from the bookshelf and shred it into tiny pieces. Sailor and Tessie are both very good about leaving things alone.

Is your house spotlessly clean, fairly neat, sort of a mess, a complete disaster, or someplace you're too ashamed to show anyone?

How long do you think it is good to be in a job before trying something different or before trying a different employer for the same job?
  • unlost dogsunlost dogs Greater Boston Posts: 12,553
If it's a high-level management position I'd give it 2-3 years. And if it's only two, you'd better have a really good sounding reason for not staying longer since they probably invested a lot in you. If it's not that level of responsibility/scope of role, then I think a year is acceptable.

    Do you think that's reasonable?

Yes. I had 2 in the entry level and 10 in the senior management in the same area. Just started a new job Monday. Never thought I would have been there that long. I hear others say 5 years tops in that mgmt role or you get stuck and stop growing. For entry level, I would suggest 2-3 honestly because I look at someone moving after only 1 year and don't hire them for fear they'll leave me that quick.

How many jobs have you had at one time?

Only two when I was alot younger (working is against my nature I think)

Oddly, it wasn't my summer stint as a security guard at a sewage treatment plant. It was when I worked at a local newspaper and was assigned to cover the most crushingly dull bedroom community you could ever imagine. After interviewing the 130 year old woman who ran the historical society about 50 times, I finally moved on. Even with my imagination, I couldn't find stories in that freaking town.

Vacuum telemarketing...that sucks. Literally. (Sorry, I know, I know _ I just couldn't resist.)

Ever just walk out of a job and not go back?

yeah, that was the job...I was in college and some dude told me about a 'great money making opportunity'. Told him I wasn't gonna do telemarketing, he said 'it's appointment setting' (nice comeback). I set one 'appointment' to some poor lady who barley spoke English, never went back, and never got paid...couldn't do it, take advantage/high pressure sales that whole bit.

Any jobs you wanted to do 'just to try it'?

Fighter pilot. But I don't like to fly so I guess I can't really try that. Dog trainer would be a more accessible thing for me to try.

What uniforms (if any) have you had to wear for jobs?

    marlboro=black shorts and marlboro gear
retail=khaki shorts and denim shirt (I HATE khaki, it does unjustice for some people)
    medical field=scrubs

did you wear any uniforms that you couldn't stand?

Mostly scrubs, which I loved. Like wearing pajamas to work every day. With black clogs. All I was missing was a bathrobe.

Hated the security guard uniform I had to wear at the sewage treatment plant.

When my mom sold the family house about three or four years ago, she found my circa-1980 McDonald's uniform in an upstairs closet. Blue polyester pants with matching smock, white cap. Good times.

When I worked on an ambulance we had to wear a uniform that made everyone's ass look enormous. Other than that, the uniform wasn't too awful.

What do you usually wear to work now?
