The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

Out of work? I left at 6:45 tonight. Late breaking case. :x And I'm not even on call! :x :x :x
But then I came home, and Mr. Unlost had chicken parm, and we watched "A Perfect Murder." And, best of all, I had two (large) glasses of wine.

Boston cancels school, workers told stay home
By Colneth Smiley Jr.
Tuesday, January 11, 2011 - Updated 2 hours ago
With up to 18 inches of snow predicted to hit the Hub tomorrow, Mayor Thomas M. Menino called off school for tomorrow, told non-essential workers to stay home and pleaded with business leaders to keep employees off the road.
Gov. Deval Patrick tonight also told non-emergency employees who work in the executive branch of state government to stay home. He said executive branch offices will be closed, except for those providing emergency services. The MBTA will also be running normal hours, the governor said tonight.
The mayor announced that a snow emergency and parking ban for the city begins tonight at 9 and all schools will be closed tomorrow. Flights at Logan International Airport are also being turned around as quickly as possible to avoid the impending storm, airport officials tell the Herald.
Meanwhile, public safety officials are urging Bay Staters to leave their cars at home and take public transportation or work from home, as an early morning nor’easter churns up a potential commuting nightmare.
“The problem with the storm is the timing and the potential impact it can have on the morning commute,” said Peter Judge, spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. “If you do not have to travel then don’t. Consider public transportation or telecommute. We want to keep as many people off the road to stay ahead of the storm.”
The storm is expected to hit New England tonight prompting the National Weather Service to put a winter storm warning in effect from midnight until 7 p.m. tomorrow.
“Snow will be moving into the Greater Boston area between midnight and 2 a.m.,” said meteorologist, Alan Dunham. “Snowfall will be heavy throughout the night into the morning through noon. It will taper off in the afternoon but won’t come to a complete end until Wednesday evening.”
Weather service forecasts 6 inches to a foot of snow in downtown Boston, 10 to 18 inches of snow outside of Route 128, and substantially more snow along Interstate 495 with a foot and a half of snow expected in the Worcester County area. The least amount of snow will be 3-to-5 inches on the outer Cape and Nantucket.
“Poor visibility” and a snowfall rate of “1 to 3 inches an hour” will be a major factor in the morning commute possibly making it difficult for road crews to keep up with the storm, said Dunham.
MEMA is staying on top of the storm holding conference calls throughout the day with the National Weather Service and key agencies throughout New England. “We will be activating the state Emergency Operation Center in Framingham in the morning,” said Judge.
Reports of school closings have already begun, with Lawrence, Lynn, Revere and Carver calling off school already.
Luisa Paiewonsky, highway administrator for the state Department of Transportation, said motorists should anticipate low visibility and heavy snow. Paiewonsky said the department is ready with personal and contractors on standby.
At Logan Airport airlines are scrambling to re-book passengers as other airports deal with cancellations and delays because of the storm.
“We are monitoring the storm and have crews on standby” to clear the runways said Phil Orlandella, spokesman for Massport/Logan Airport.
“The airlines are tying to get as many flights out today as they can because tomorrow there will probably be no flights out of Logan in the morning. Airlines are canceling because of the storm,” Orlandella added.
Travelers are urged to check in with airlines regarding departures and arrivals. Massport said many airlines are re-booking passengers and will try to get them back into the system late tomorrow afternoon or by Thursday morning the latest.
