Steele Rips Obama For Making Chicago Olympics Push
I'm not sure if this is good for him or not but he better deliver the Chicago Olympics or he'll look very weak going all the way to Copenhagen and become unsucessful. Some he already knows Chicago has been selected over Rio either way we shall see later on today.

[/b]Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele criticized President Obama on Tuesday for traveling to Copenhagen to pitch Chicago as a host site for the 2016 Olympics.
Steele said that sending Michele Obama, which was the White House's original plan, would have sufficed. "I think the First Lady would have been and should have been the lead here," said the RNC Chair. "Let her go and sell Chicago. But the goal should be creating not job opportunities seven years from now but job opportunities today. And I think that what the president is doing is not necessarily helpful and doesn't, in my view instill the confidence in the American people that the focus is there on jobs, wealth creation and moving us beyond a recession to prosperity."
Steele accused the president of leaving Congress directionless on health care. "This administration has been pushing like hound dogs on getting a health care bill passed pronto," he said. "And if it is that important, Mr. President, then stay at home and get it done. But don't then push the members of Congress to blindly go about this process, not reading legislation, not putting legislation up on the Internet for the American people to read, not giving the kind of I think leadership that is necessary to get your health care bill done."

i have so much to say about this and so little time. i think i will just make a few quick points.
1. when did michal steele begin to hate america?? correct me if i am wrong, but it is usually those on the right that are superpatriotic and filled with nationalism. i would think they would WANT the olympics to be in the US. to me, if he does not lend support in obama's effort in this case, then he is rooting against america. if we are the greatest nation in the world, wouldn't steele want to be out in front and leadingin this situation instead of throwing bombs at the president? i can not think of any time in my life where any politician has said they would not like the olympics to me here. obama is going to try to insure that we get them. steele should be supportive instead of slagging him in this situation. it almost seems to me that he is hoping that obama is going to fail here.
2. obama taking 2 days out of his schedule is not going to affect the health care debate. congress has been sandbagging on this issue for weeks. they want to delay a vote until after 2010 so it can be killed in the house. just last week olympia snowe even said she felt like she was being rushed and wanted to delay the committee vote on it. steele should shut his hole because he is clearly wrong on this issue.
i don't get how steele can call out obama for taking 2 days to lobby for us gettting the olympics, something that would showcase our country on the world stage, when it is congress that has been stalling this whole time.
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."
Michael Steeele is completely full of shit this i can assure you this is just his partian politics showing it's ugly face. Being from MD/DC area this guy is as crooked as they come especially when he ran for Congress and lost several years back. He tried too many politricks to mention in that run and STILL lost. He helped his sister to squeeze every dime out of Mike Tyson whom she was married to, then took that money get the position of Lt Governor of MD. He's complete sleezeball. However he looks nice and dresses nice and is the african american rep for the Republican Party and many seem to believe every word he says on Fox News.
Maybe he's afraid there maybe too much focus on Chicago when and IF Obama is finishing up his second term. Either way he should support the President in trying to get the olympics to the USA and to a beautiful city such as Chicago. If nothing else the crime rate will probably will decrease and that has to be a good thing for the city and state and country.

I read a very, very brief article on CNN saying Chicago would still need to build some new facilities for 2016.
Does he think it will all be built 7 years from now?
I would like to hear jlew's take on this or soulsinging since they are both from Chicago..
and he won't look weak if Chicago doesn't get it. There is a lot that goes into where an Olympics will be held. Him going there helps Chicago, but it certainly is not a magic bullet.
Yep, not a surprise...people get too worked up here and bitch and moan about others and then go tell mommy Kat or big sister Sea to take them away. Bunch of cry babies.
Anyhow, I'm just sick and tired of people criticizing EVERYTHING the president does...regardless of who is currently in office. Just like the idiots that thought GW couldn't run the gov't from his ranch (ever heard of cell phones???? Air force 1???? etc, etc, etc...they can do everything from anywhere), now idiots are saying that Obama can't be working on anything else if he's in pimping the Olympics. Really???? If a president can't do more than 1 thing at a time, he should quit. I'm quite sure that Obama is capable of driving through a ridiculously rushed, stupid version of a health care plan while pimping the Olympics...in fact, I wish he couldn't.
exactly my thoughts. Chicago would be building many new facilities downtown and surrounding areas. Construction (jobs) would probably begin 5 years before the events started, not in 2016.
I cannot imagine why a city would not want the Olympics coming to town. For every economic argument against the Olympics there are two arguments to refute it.
Yeah... no wonder why people in chicago (or any city, really) don't want the olymics there.
I'm originally from Pittsburgh, and every single friend or relative that I talked to there in the last few weeks was bitching about the G20... that locked the city down for a few days and made everyone's commute and life miserable... I can't imagine being in a city during the entire olympics (and the run up to it).

i actually turned down a chance to carry the olympic torch leading up to this winters olympics because of it

In the meantime cincy, try and be on your best behaviour so you don't get banned like jlew. that would be awful if you were both banned. goodness. this should go without saying, but that's one 3-some I don't want to be invited to.
Edited for the winky eye. gosh. i better not forget that

RHETORIC: VALERIE JARRETT WILL BENEFIT FINANCIALLY. Beck asked, "Is it possible that she is going to benefit if the Olympics come to Chicago?" Caddell responded, "Well, that’s the word. She has certainly had a lot of dealings going on in real estate." [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
REALITY: UPON ENTERING GOVERNMENT, VALERIE JARRETT DIVESTED ALL HER REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT HOLDINGS EXCEPT FOR A SINGLE INVESTMENT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OLYMPIC BID. Valerie Jarrett divested all her investment real estate holdings upon entering government except for a single real estate holding that she was unable to sell. This single real estate investment has been determined by White House Counsel and the independent Office of Government Ethics to present no conflict of interest in performing her duties as a White House advisor. It has nothing to do with the Olympic bid.

they olympics are not about pride and your country ... it's a scam - it's all about the money which is why most games are in the US ... you guys have had the olympics more than anyone for that reason ...
anyways - this discussion is moot now ...

i'm sorry you didn't get the olympics in chicago like you wanted but the reality is that it's a fraud ... we are getting this first hand in Vancouver where the IOC seems to operate with their own laws and jurisdictions - they are extorting provincial and municipal gov'ts and the people of British Columbia will be paying it for years.

Winter olympics are much more costly than summer olympics... I saw stats yesterday that basically every recent summer olympics has made a profit except Athens.
But like anything else, those stats can be manipulated...

i'm not sure how objective this site is ... so, take it with a grain of salt and it does involve a lot of reading - i tried to pick out the piece that is relevant to our discussion ...

Can the Olympic Games Be an Economic Success?
Our review of the existing peer-reviewed evidence on the economic impact of the Olympic Games reveals relatively little evidence that hosting the Games produces significant economic benefits for the host city or region.

Kenneth Bullock ,director of the Utah League of Cities and Towns, says despite the stated Olympic principals of fairness and sportsmanship, the International Olympic Committee, or IOC, and its sponsors are there to make money for themselves and not for the community at large.
"What really happens is it's a business and the IOC and the television rights and the sponsors are there to promote their products. For us to think that people are not going to benefit this monetarily is a little naïve on our part."
Anyone needing an ethics waiver need not be involved.....

Now that I've found out today that South America has never had the Olympics I'm happy as hell they were selected. It's about time if I could afford I'd go to Rio in a heartbeat. It's odd VH1 Classic is playing the 2004 concert RUSH IN RIO and I'm watching once again..
I heard today on CNN that the Olympics in the US is paid for privately according to the organiser to the Atlanta games, is that really so?

I got a one:
I thought the Chicago Cubs were the only Chicago entity to flame out in the first round of October.
Here is one more:
Children praise Obama, Chicago 2016 redux
He went to Denmark, to double-down,
To bring the games to his adopted town.
“The One,” with two other “Big O’s” in tow,
How could the IOC ever say no?
Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.
They were sent to make the city’s plea,
as a personal favor to their friend, Daley.
They promised their friend an impassioned pitch,
so he could make pals, and union laborers rich.
Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.
He leaned on them with his rock-star ways,
but the IOC was rather unfazed.
And to show the world how much he cared,
he met with McChrystal while he was there.
Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.
The committee returned a resounding “nope,”
should have sent goons, with a fat envelope.
The IOC rendered Obama moot,
“Forest Gump lite,” in a really nice suit.
Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.
The Daley Plaza crowd got punk’d,
heck, they didn’t even have time to get drunk!
Shows you what The Messiah’s worth,
the “Second City” came in fourth.
Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.
It’s Rio in 2016, on that you can bet,
does the rest of the world “love us” yet?
Barack Hussein Obama. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.
