dont really understand the whole "did he rape rape her" or not controversy. No one under the age of 13 can give consent. So even if she said "yes" to him and gave consent it means nothing of course. I mean wasnt he 44 when it happened? And she 13? He was in control of the situation, not her. It was rape.
whoopi suggested it wasnt rape, because "she was aware and her family was aware". I dont know how the family could know about the rape, and even if they condoned it, how does that make it okay. And secondly, I am sure the girl was aware of what was going on, so yeah she was aware. But still, the fact remains, a 13 year old cant give consent. Plain and simple.
I dont know what his punishment should be. I dont know about statute of limitations. I dont know, how the jury should deal with the fact that the girl now woman who was raped forgives him and believes he shouldnt be punished.
I do know that what I talked about above is the law and stone cold facts.

The thing to remember though is the statutes of limitations and juries don't really come into play in this case. They guy pled guilty, but skipped the country before the judge could hand out his sentence. It is basically the same as if he had broken out of prison the day he got there. My understanding is that all there is left to do is for a new judge to choose a sentence to give him. If they did some how give him a new trial I am not sure how that would work, since he admitted to what he did in court.
Am I the only one who can't read the last part of the thread title and not think of Burt Reynolds on celebrity jeopardy?

Has anyone seen the petition that supposedly around 100 or so actors signed saying that he shouldn't be charged ?
No, do you have the list of names? I'd like to know who is ok with raping 13 year old girls.
well you asked
has now been signed by more than 70 film industry luminaries, including Polanski's fellow directors Michael Mann, Wim Wenders, Pedro Almodóvar, Darren Aronofsky, Terry Gilliam, Julian Schnabel, the Dardenne brothers, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Wong Kar-Wai, Walter Salles and Jonathan Demme. Actors Tilda Swinton, Monica Bellucci and Asia Argento, as well as producer Harvey Weinstein have also put their names on the petition. Yesterday, Weinstein stated he was "calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation".
i'd be interested to know if these asshats would give to shits if polanski was plant manager or some other profession they consider beneath them
fucking scumbags
Agreed, but Terry Gilliam is still the man. I'll give him a pass on this one.
The concept of getting a bunch of filmmakers to back him up is pretty funny. I have an idea... I'm going to get a bunch of friends who are amatuer photographers and musicians like me to sign a petition saying I'm a good driver, and if I ever get pulled over for speeding, I'll show it to the officer. I'm a genius!!
i don't understand how anyone can defend Polanski....
he fed quaaludes and champagne to a 13 year old girl and then had anal sex with her....how is that even close to consensual??? the victim probably just wants it all to go away because she is older and maybe has kids of her own and doesn't want this all over the news and understandably so.

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

i get what you're saying...i've just lost a lot of respect for those that are defending him
agreed!!!
i simply don't understand it.
why?
truly, if any of them thought about it thoroughly...thought about their sister, their own daughter perhaps....at the age of 13 (or any age, really) being raped.....would they ever support this? again, it does not matter if the victim won a huge settlement in a seperate, civil case, does not matter that at this point in time the victim just wants it all over....the fact remains, polanski was convicted and never served his time. would anyone seriously say it's OK, simply b/c 30 years have passed? wtf?! that should anger everyone. i never quite understood how he got away with this. besides, we all know if he were not a famous/talented director....NO one would be signing a petition to help him out. :x :x :x
i cannot believe some of those names on that....actors/directors i have so admired. shameful. do any of them have children? i think so. i do not know how ANY of them can think this is 'right.'
Agreed, but Terry Gilliam is still the man. I'll give him a pass on this one.
No, he is someone that supports raping 13 year old girls. Hardly "the man" and not worthy of any sort of pass. I hope Terry doesn't have a daughter.
i'm pretty sure he does....i think she was even in the film 'Brazil' as Michael Palin's daughter

Good thing he is not both an analyst and a therapist.
I don't think there are too many plant managers who have the ability to make Harvey Weinstein millions of dollars, which makes it even more sleazy.
