When I travel to Philly next month, where should I try my 1st CS? I've heard of Pat's and Geno's but on a recent episode of Man v Food, he ate at Tony Luke's. Your thoughts?

  • Don't waste your time at Pat's or Geno's. Tony Lukes is my pick, but there are lots of other great options that I'm sure you'll read about later in this thread.
  • Dalessandro's

it's a little northwest of the city center but it's fucking tasty.

    i like Jim's too.

pat's and geno's suck. they are tourist traps. only go there if you want to say you were there.

tony lukes or jims on south street...and don't hesitate to try the hot roast pork at tony lukes. that is the best sandwich in the city.

and you will probably get a lot of recommendations from the locals to leave philly and try their favorite local place. ignore these recommendations. no need to leave philly, there are plenty of good places in the city.

Is it really that close to the Comcast center???

Im driving in from NY. So I will have a car. I plan on parking at the Comcast Center of course. Is it walking distance to Tony Luke's?? If not, is there any parking around Tony Luke's??

Ive been to Philly many times as I had a ex- girlfriend who went to UPENN, and parking in Philly was always a tough thing, especially the downtown area (South St.).

I def. want to gran some Tony Luke's either before or after the show on 10/31, just worried about the parking and getting around situation.

Avoid Pat and Genos. Everyone was telling me Jims, I was disappointed. I did like Tony Lukes, you gotta get it with provolone tho. Don't believe the whiz hype.

I assume by "Comcast Center" you mean the Spectrum area. FYI there's a separate building called the "Comcast Center" that's downtown, about three miles from the Spectrum.

But yeah, Tony Luke's is a decent walk from the Spectrum. Or, you could pull up to Tony Luke's before parking at the Spectrum.

Reading Terminal is a great place with lots of food options - especially DiNic's roast pork. However, cheese steaks there are just ok, I think. Also, it is at 12th & Filbert (near Arch). I have no idea what 51st & 12th is.

Tony Luke's does have ample parking, but it's a little too far for walking distance from the Spectrum. Cheesesteak at Tony Luke's is great - one of the best; roast pork is better.

Make sure you get real cheese (Provolone or American) on your steak. Don't ruin it with that orange plastic crap. Also, don't order it with Swiss, like John Kerry.

Does the Radisson Hotel make Cheese Steaks? Ya know, for that morning or night time snack rush! :P

    Thanks Gar.

Or, even better, veal parm. Takes them about 10-15 to make that, btw.

  • Dont waste your time with Pats and Genos. Check out this list, it was a contest done by Glen Macnow to find the best cheesesteak in town, we ate over 50 and he reviewed 45. Johns Roast Pork is by far the best steak in the city:

Thanks for the answers. I did mean the Spectrum, I thought it was renamed Comcast center. But after doing some google searches I saw I was calling it the wrong name.

Mapquest says its 2.3 miles between Luke's & the Spectrum. And if you are telling me there is ample parking by Luke's, then without a doubt I will be hitting Tony Luke's up either before or after the halloween show.

They are opened late im sure, right???

    Tony Luke's hours:
    Monday-Thursday: 6 AM - Midnight
    Friday and Saturday: 6AM - 2AM
Sunday: Closed (I swear I was just there on a Sunday last year, but that's what it says)

John's Roast Pork is supposed to be great; I haven't eaten there. Their hours are pretty limited though (I think until 3pm Mon-Sat).

  • Yeah Tony Luke's is definitely closed on Sundays. I forgot about the midnight closing during the week. I usually went on weekends.

John's is great, but you have to get there by noon or you'll be relegated to the backup rolls. It's also not the easiest place to find, particularly for an out of towner.
