Would Pearl Jam ever do a Super Bowl Halftime show?

I don't think it's a question of whether or not they are big enough, but would they actually oblige to do it? If you asked me 2 years ago if they would I would definitely say not a chance, but 2 things make me think they actually might 1)Tom Petty doing it (I just think they respect him enough) 2)the whole Verizon thing this summer

I'm thinking the Verizon thing might be a slippery slope into things such as Halftime shows

Tom Petty kinda appeals to the masses. I just don't think PJ has the popularity to ever be asked to perform. they're not justin timberlake.

either way, I wouldn't want to see 15 minute medley set from PJ at the Superbowl.

maybe, but only if the Bears make the Superbowl. Otherwise, Ed will never sing with fervor

i disagree with a few posts up. I think that there is enough popularity for PJ. The Superbowl definitely has gotten a few decent acts.

However, the political thing would be a deal-breaker both ways. Eddie would want the freedon to say whatever he wants on that world-wide stage, and the network/NFL would have none of it, and you know how Eddie is about being restricted in speaking his mind.

So no, I dont see it ever happening.

You are correct. There is no question that they are not big enough. They are not as big as U2, they are not as pop as Justin Timberlake, and they are not beloved like Tom Petty.

What songs would they play anyway? Alive, about a kid who found out his dad wasn't his real dad? Jeremy, a song about suicide? Black, a song about lost love? Better Man would be weird.

as much as i LOVE pearl jam...

they are nowhere NEAR popular enough anymore to do this...
you have to have super mass appeal to do this and they just dont cut it...

think when you tell people you are going to see pearl jam and they say "they are still a band?" i hear it all the time...

we have a huge devoted following, but not a mass appeal across all media...
which i think is kind of what they wanted all along and i'm quite ok with that :)
  • I really don't think Pearl Jam would be interested in doing that - they even turned down The Simpsons.

There's a huge PJ fanbase amongst sports writers and broadcasters...and I'm sure there's afew football fans who likes PJ as well... ;) so there is a chance.

But PJ prefers basketball over football anyways.

It's just something I couldn't see PJ doing -- or even wanting to do. I really can't picture it...

I got to disagree with this. I mean maybe for people like myself who grew up in the 90's they might be bigger but I think for the average person on the street Petty is way huger than PJ. I bet if you asked the average person watching the Superbowl what Pearl Jam songs they knew they would probably say Jeremy, and maybe Alive or Even Flow or Betterman. But Petty has a ton of hits that people across generations know. Not to mention the songs from the Travelling Willburys. If you look at his Greatest Hits album, most of the songs are instantly recognizable for a lot of people.
  • NO WAY! Super Bowl is too much of a POP scene half time show. Not to bring down tom petty or even paul mccartney, but i seriously doubt pearl jam would subject themselves to a show like that

Wrong. Also, Pearl Jam does not have any song that would pump up the crowd at the Super Bowl like American Girl or Free Fallin'. I would bet that if Pearl Jam played Alive that 65% or more of the crowd would not recognize the song.

I would bet that kids in high school these days are more familiar with Petty than Pearl Jam. The over 40 crowd easily would be more familiar with Petty. And those in between would be more familar with Petty. I think newborns would be more into PJ.

How I wish this was true... I have had so many people in the past ten years surprised when they find out Pearl Jam is still a band.
That has never happened with Petty...
Then again my circle of friends doesn't make it a scientific fact...

Are you insane? Outside of the crazy fanbase, most people don't even know Pearl Jam still exists. People view them as a 90s grunge fad.

yea I dont see them doing it, not anytime soon atleast. Very few people under 25 even know pearl jam is still a band and alot of them only know them from the grunge era and maybe radio friendly last kiss. Got to get more rock band and guitar hero songs!!! :) to appeal to the younger audience.
