There is something kinda disturbing that nowadays, when their is a slow song or what not, most people, dont put lighters in the air, they put up their cell phones
disturbing is a strong word. Maybe all these cell phones in the air is a sign of the times?
It is pretty silly to see a bunch of phones held up in the same row thou.
It’s an extension of the ‘me’ society in my opinion.

More like its because people don't have lighters because they don't smoke? Phones to kids are like air, like an extension of their arm and brain. Its just one of those things you either roll with or become a geezer about. And actually seeing tons of phones lit up during a slow song looks pretty cool.

I completely agree with the OP, but.........................
.....in Seattle, I was behind a short girl who had to use her phone like a periscope. Otherwise, she never would have even glimpsed the band.
See, that's when you offer to put her on your shoulders. Sure, it will annoy the people behind, but at least you get to tell all your friends you spent the whole show with a cute girl's legs wrapped around you.
I'm not sure my wife (sitting in a side section) would have gone for that. I can hear it now....."hon, I was just trying to help out a fellow fan."

I will add that at Springsteen shows, on the front floor "pit" area, they have very tight security regarding cameras... you might get a quick picture but I have seen people and their cameras ejected from the area for filming.
Yes that's extreme. But maybe that's a reflection of how annoying it must be for the artist/band to look out at so many cameras?
It's not like you can capture the whole stage when making your videos anyways, if you are watching & zeroing in on one person on stage - guess who, usually - you can't even watch what's going on with Matt, Stone, Jeff and Mike. Seeing Pearl Jam is a "whole band" experience, I love love love Eddie but I go to watch the entire show - not just thru a viewfinder.
I went to the Seattle I and Portland shows last week, and just have to vent a bit about what has become my concert pet peeve....
The video takers.
The constant holding up of the camera, watching the entire concert thru the little viewer in the back.
I know, I know - we all want to see a picture or several from the show. Yes, I have taken some pictures at concerts!
But what happens to your actual experience of being at the show and just watching it?
Are we to the point where we can't just watch the show live and have the actual memories without video "proof" of the concert? Does everyone have to have their video for utube or facebook?
So this is the part where I offer up that it may just be a generational difference, hmm? Do I just need to get over the camera screen lights that are freakin' everywhere??
I caught myself taking too many pictures at the last shows I was at. I agree that it is distracting, but at the same time I find myself not wanting to miss that "shot". So from now on I'm thinking of taking a few shots in the beginning and then at the end when the lights are on for the last song. Taking pics are distracting those around and as I have found to myself. I'm not able to enjoy the songs as I worry about getting the perfect action shot. So hopefully my new line of thinking will work and I'll be able to enjoy the show more and not bother those around me. Live and learn...
This reminds me of when I went to see Green Day this summer. This lady next to me was taking pictures through out the whole concert. She was there with her kid so i guess she wasn't really interested in the concert. But it was kind of annoying, she was doing all kinds of contortions so she can get the pics.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
Slightly off topic... Why do girls need to bring their camera's everywhere? Can't we just go to the bar WITHOUT having documentation of it?
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
This really pisses me off...it has got noticeably worse in the past year it seems. At SBE I had some huge guys smelly arm pit in my face while he held his phone up..
oh, I'm a big fan of getting a couple choice pics and vids, especially if I'm up really close and don't have to bug anyone to get the shot.
I have a couple of nice shots from Mansfield, MA last summer that are of my favorite pics I've ever taken - from front row. I was jealous of the people in the pit who were using mega digital SLRs with huge lenses - why can't I be that chick?!
I would be so sad if I couldn't bring my camera in!!
I'll be real conscious of my neighbors, I promise!
As for texting & god-forbid talking on cell phones - come on, people, just stop that now, please!
i had someone walk up next to me during daughter with her cameraphone, and asked me and others around me to not sing too loud while she was recording.
:?: :?: :?:
of course i didn't shut up, and a friend of mine told me i should have sung off key, just cuz
Ok, I am pro-camera/phone at concerts (as long as they don't obstruct anyone else and they aren't bothering you, who freaking cares).......however, that lady deserved a throat punch!
The band provide you with decent, SLR-taken pics and official bootlegs, is that not enough?
People forget that they should be there for themselves for the experience, not so that everyone else can know they were there, which is the motivation behind the need to bring cameras to everything nowadays. My Facebook profile's gotta look cool man!
Give me a break. I cringe everytime I watch another person take a photo on a crappy point and shoot camera, review the terrible photo and try again. And the laughable use of flash.

not to mention, it was daughter. really? it's not like it was no way or or if they had played some rare ass song or they all of the sudden dropped their instruments and started cabbage patching. everybody had to be quiet for DAUGHTER? i just shot a look at her like 'bitch please' lol
they all of the sudden dropped their instruments and started cabbage patching.
this would be the only time i would allow cameras! :ugeek:
wouldn't it be AWESOME? a girl can dream lol
random pic here and there i can see, but the constant viewing thru a camera escapes me. i'm too much of a spaz during the show to take a decent pic anyway
Doesn't anybody jam out anymore??? How the hell can you hold a camera while you're jamming?? I have my priorities and taking in the music in its entirety is one of them. I even miss the encore shot which is usually considered apropos in most venues. All that money to go home and watch it on tv instead of joining in with everyone else. I don't understand it!

Its going to get worse before it gets better. The day will come when people will hold their cell phones in the air with a virtual lighter application running.
My husband predicted they'd start making cell phones with that someday!
I believe the application is already available on the iPhone if I'm not mistaken.
I remember saying to my girlfriend at the first encore break in Seattle 2 "What ever happened to holding up lighters for an encore?" as I surveyed the thousands of lit up lcd screens all around me. Bring back the lighters I say! Lighters are way more rock and roll! I was the only one with a lighter lit and I thought I might get jumped by security so I put it out. Did we all forget about the power of the flame?????

This doesn't make you old, it makes you sane. I went to a Brand New show and ended up stuck behind a guy videotaping the whole thing... I guess he needed to capture the "memory" of a show he didn't actually see because he spent the whole damn thing standing stock still and looking through a viewfinder. I see that around here too... people with 500 pictures from one show... like it's more important to accumulate STUFF like more photos, videos, and bootlegs, to show off to your friends than it is to accumulate memories of being at a great show.
BINGO!! Myspace, Facebook, Twitter or whatever other social networking site that's out there are to blame for this annoying trend we're seeing now at concerts. Every time I go to a show nowadays all I see are these kids taking picture after picture all throughout the show or standing there filming every second of the concert without regard to those around them whose view they might be obstructing which is really troubling to me.
And this is coming from someone who does "get it" when it comes to being chill about these things at shows as I have been known to bring my camera to a show from time to time to snap a couple pics of my favorite musician or to capture that "special moment" on video so I do feel I understand where folks are coming from. But seriously??? all throughout the show do you need to be taking pictures...and that many?? I didn't pay my hard earned money to watch an entire PJ concert through your fucking iPhone/Blackberry/Digital camera view finder for crying out loud so get a clue folks, lol!!
When I see this happen at shows I wonder to myself if we live in a day and age where it has become socially acceptable to live our lives in these virtual environments rather than in the real world (and I'm not referring to the MTV reality TV show btw!).
i don't see anything wrong with calling someone so they can hear. you don't have to hold the phone up since chances are it'll be pretty fucking loud anyways. i was front row at a powderfinger gig years ago and wanted to ring my friends in oz during a certain song. i held my phone down low, trying to hide it from view but bernie saw it, came over, picked up my phone, yelled HELLOOO or something into the phone, then gave it back to me with a big grin. so, apparently he was okay with it.
I agree, The Facebook generation is killing everything that is pure and true. What happened to going out to coffee to talk to someone. Now I go out to meals with people to watch them text the whole time. I talk to kids these days that have no personalities because they never develop them sitting in front of computers all day. Ya, leave you camera at home and take in the show...... smoke a j and get lost in the moment.

Seriously, one or two songs, ok, and a few pictures, fine.
But people behind you are tying to see...put your camera down. Its illegal anyway.
