  • When thinking of "Gonna See My Friend"...

I don't think its about drugs. If it is, I choose to believe that it would only mean pot, because MANY people still dabble in that relaxation from time to time. especially celebrities whose careers depend upon constant creativity. people can judge musicians all they want for smoking pot to help inspire ideas, but they don't know what it truly is like to be in their shoes, in the spotlight, under pressure from everyone.--or cigarettes.

I think "friend" could also refer to his lover/girlfriend/fiance/wife, because lets face it. Guys touring on the road don't get to see their significant other/spouse every night like many of us. sex can be like a drug or addiction to men is my guess. It sure seems like thats whats on most of y'all's minds half the time anyway, boys!! just my 2 cents anyway.

    I am the "friend";)
Seriously, i am not sure about what all you are saying but the issue about women, this can be the point. I've been told that people that has such a creative minds are impossible to have drug adictions for many years and look how these 5 people (EV) are. You know what i mean? keep fit 45 years old guys. This song can be anything and thats what EV is looking for when he makes music. Its just my point of view.

lol :D thank you, Vicky. this song CAN be about anything, just like many of their songs. That's why so many can relate to them.

and I hope you are the "friend", girl! ;) Us girls can dream, right?

Yeah..this is a no brainer to me...from a distance and up close, Eddie is clearly talking about his two prominent addictions, alcohol and cigarrettes. The guy drinks LIKE A FISH! Always has, and now maybe he may be having some desire to quit.
I hold the pain, release me!

I've always thought of Got Some as being about drugs - but as music being the drug. Pearl Jam's the drug dealer that keeps giving us fixes... Didn't Eddie say himself that growing up, music was like a drug to him?

Got some, I took as asking 'do you have the balls'. If you don't, then, well, I can lend you some support.

In real world terms I apply this to the new Obama presidency. He called some big plays in the election campaign and it is no time to back out. He has the support, so follow through.

Ok, so there are some pretty full on interpretations in this thread: Here is my 2 cents:

Firstly I am a big believer in music being whatever YOU interpret it as......As in, the songwriter has written his words down - whether they mean anything to him personally, is just that - PERSONAL.......what is more important, especially to a band like Pearl Jam, who are all about their fans - is how the fan base interprets them...what they mean to any individual at any one time...and that's all fluid - what a song means to you now, may not be what it means to you in 5 years time...because (to quote another song), 'people change, as does everything'........

to me, Got Some is about making a political statement , it's about rock and roll, and it's about sex......

Does no one else think that got some if you need it may be just a bit of a booty call???? Well, that's ok if no one else does, cause lyrics are always open to interpretation, and being able to put in any number of interpretations is what makes a good songwriter - to be able to write a song that could be about a specific thing, or could be about nothing, yet has so many people analysing it on so many levels is what makes an artist go from being good - to friggin' awesome.......

hope you all enjoyed my little rant... :)

All I can say is that someone has got something on their mind...

but yes the multi-layered interpretation of the lyrics is something that has sustained my interest in PJ for many many years. I always look forward to how my interpretation of a song evolves over time.

Hey, break totally given. There are no judgements here.

All I can say, as a bloke, it is a little hard to visualise Ed giving a 'booty call'

ok, fair enough, but as a girl....well, it's very easy to imagine Ed giving (or getting) a booty call...I mean who says he is singing in the first person? He could be describing what he thinks of someone, or he could simply be saying to someone else that hey - you don't need to ask - it's there for the taking...

I have been told on more than one occasion by more than one guy, that it's pretty much where they are coming from....you know, when a girl gets all hung up on something like...'well, don't want to ask cause what if he says no?'...well, I have it on fairly good authority that a guy will NEVER say no...so ...'got some, if you need it'.....no need to ask.... ;)

    good to know.....
  • The "friend" reminds me of the friend from Severed Hand...

I've no fear but for falling down
So look out below I'm falling now
Understand I just need my friend
    A way, a way, a way home.

    Just sayin.

    ^^^ Maybe. :geek:
In an interview, Ed said the song is about a drug intervention. It's written as if someone is going to get a fix, but it actually means the opposite. He's going to stop it.

What he's "sick of" is the addiction.

I read this song as an extension of "Save You."

I remember reading or hearing this too. ^^^
    &&&&&&&&&&&&&&
  • Both of these songs seem to be about drugs to be, especially Gonna See My Friend. What do you think? Severed Hand was obviously about drugs, so the band isn't that far removed from the drug scene.

In my opinion, I think its pretty lame for a 40-yr olds with kids and families to still be doing drugs.

    Discuss.

You'd say I'm a perfect idiot, but I never thought of DRUGS while listening to PJ... Blessed ignorance??? (not very good in English, haha)
I prefer thinking of a "friend" as it stays and of "some" ...enthusiasm??? to share, but they said I've always been rather stupid, so maybe "they"'re right?

Feel like a right piece in a wrong place.
  • "Got Some" has nothing to do with drugs at all. He is talking about the energy and willingness to get active in what is going on in the world. If you are apathetic and need some motivation or energy then he's "got some if you need it." He is also asking what your stand on the war is: "this situation, which side are you on?, are you pulling out, are you dropping bombs, have you heard of diplomatic resolve?" He is also saying hurry up and get active before we lose all of our freedom. "Turn it up, set if off before its gone. Lets everybody carry on carry on."
