Yes.
I don't see the greathess of ATW, Unthought known or Force Of Nature (my loss ofc).
But, Just Breathe, Got Some, Gonna See My Friends and even Supersonic (already a B-side I know) has potential. The three rockers are catchy and easy to listen to.
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"
I think Force of Nature should be the next single. I have a feeling it will be either Got Some or Amongst the Waves.

Reality check......"Got Some" fits "PERFECTLY" into Alt Rock Radio.....
Some of you that post here have no idea what will work on radio. "Got Some" would easily be a Top 3 hit on Alt Rock Radio. If they promote it properly it will thrive. Casual, YOUNGER FANs would eat this song up!!!
Just Breathe has great crossover potential but it would die quickly on Alt Rock Radio. This song would have to be positioned differently across different radio formats to do well. I still think it has potential though.
Amongst The Waves is a sleeper and could be a GREAT third single, as this song would bring back casual fans of TEN with Eddie's singing.
Force of Nature would do nothing on radio and wouldn't even hit Top 10......catchy tune but nothing oustanding and its sounds like it should have been released in the 90's.
I think Force of Nature should be the next single. I have a feeling it will be either Got Some or Amongst the Waves.
I doubt it'll be force of nature, they aren't even playing that live yet..
I dint say it would be, I said it should be.

Does it make sense releasing records for a few college kids on alt-rock FM? The band has put all its eggs in the self-releasing basket, why would they bring out singles that are not intended to sell as many records as possible?
If it comes down to a simple business decision - and the band is a business - then keeping the thing going and growing is about making a profit. Stone said that the great thing about self-releasing is making more money off each unit sold - but they have to sink in their own capital up front to get the money back later. So, selling a product you've paid for in advance means you have to go after the largest market and the widest possible demographic. With record label backing and a guaranteed royalties cheque and multi-album contract already signed they could do what the fuck they liked. Being self-sufficient is different, there is a good reason this record doesn't sound like Steve Reich or something.
I agree that Got Some is great and is catchy and adored by the fans but, if I were a businessman looking at it as solely though those eyes, i'd say that a single which reaches alt-rock and mainstream (and MTV and every other vaguely interest party out there) is a better way to go. Personally, I'd say ATW, Just Breathe or maybe maybe FON fall into that category.
I'd like to see them make huge with Backspacer because - from a selfish fans point of view - it gives them more scope in the future to self-release and do so with less commercial material and do whatever they want to do. But this record is critical... if Backspacer didn't sell and nobody was interested, they'd make a big fucking loss and be left with two choices: sink more money into the hole and try again or go to a record label cap in hand.
Or choice three: Call it a day.
I really enjoy the album and the accessibility of it. All the early signs you hear about sales and sell out concerts and so on are great but they may need a radio friendly unit shifter to keep the momentum and I just don't feel Got Some is it (even if it is one of the best fucking songs they ever wrote!).
Mind you, what the hell do I know? These guys are the best band in the world cos they never do what I wrote above...
Got Some would fade quicker than the Fixer and quicker than Life Wasted from the last album. I don't see where it fits in radio today.
The fact that a number of fans think this would be a good single shows just how out of touch with modern mainstream music most fans are. Got Some would get played no more than once on radio.
It's odd that despite the fact that one song on the album has spontaneously been charting on itunes, none of the fans think it would make a good single.
i really hope its not ATW. i;ve decided that song is one step away from christian rock, with awful surfing metaphors. i tried. i really did. but its a pale imitation of classic PJ songs.
i prefer a pale imitation of classic pj songs to a pathetic imitation of mediocre punk songs

nah. i like their mediocre punk songs. well, i like them enough anyway.
I don't get how people see Force of Nature as a single. The only possibilities that I see are Got Some AND ATW
I kind of agree, Force of Nature is solid. Also, call me crazy, but Supersonic would work as a single. It kicks you in the junk, and has that great bridge. It's better than anything Weezer or Green Day has put out in years. Still, Got Some is the song I listen to over and over and seems the most radio friendly. Just Breathe is just a little too wedding songy for me.
Change don't come at once, it's a wave, building before it breaks.
I can't believe so many people are suggesting Just Breathe as the next single. What radio format does that fit in? Not one that plays Pearl Jam. Not saying it's a bad song...but it has to be something like Got Some or Amongst The Waves.
Pearl Jam has always been an album band, not a single band...with the powerful exception of Ten.
I don't even listen to the radio, but I suppose Sirius and alt rock charts do matter, and so does some exposure on video. KOL is doing pretty well with videos these days. So its going to have to be something creatively done on several levels, and they seem to be doing pretty cool things with the release of this album.
Why not release two singles at once? Its not normal, but its possible. The point is to get out that Backspacer is an album you want to own, not a single you want to hear on the radio. I suggest this:
Supersonic and Got Some need to be out in the market now. There both upbeat and rock, and punk which I think is a great impression of this album on a whole, and that's the point...sell the album. People who want to hear sing-a-long rock, with a fast edge and some good guitar bridges and solos will get a clear picture of this album.
Then follow that up witlh Just Breath, its a great crossover yes and its needs to be released following a few rock release songs, then eyes get opened that there are several good songs here and all are very listenable. Just Breath would blow the doors open on album sales I think at this point.
And if you can release other songs after that, Amongst the Wave is a great choice. The slow build and the chorus on this song is good for a late single.
As for a 2 videos, I would suggest Got Some and Amongst the Waves. I think Amongst the Waves has really good potential for a video.
All this is IMHO because I really don't have a clue.

Supersonic is great, it would be a nice single. However, isn't it a bit silly releasing a single that was the B-side of the first single from the album?

i don't know if it's silly or not, i mean, if people who otherwise wouldn't get to hear it, do get to hear it b/c it's released as a single, then why not? it probably won't happen for the reason you state, but i don't think it would be silly.

I live out in the sticks, with lousy radio reception. This is one station I can pick up: www.wnti.org They play a pretty broad variety of music, from singer-songwriter stuff to eclectic early 70's music, to the "Daily Dose of Dead." I have heard songs from ITW on there, I heard PJ's version of "Love, Reign O'er Me" on there, I have heard other PJ songs. I bet they would play "Just Breathe."

I'm guessing you're all in world famous bands since you seem to know more than Pearl Jam about what's best for the band.

exactly it just doesn't have that 'feel' to it, I'd like to see amongst the waves, but it will likely be Just Breathe as the next single..
I don't understand how people can see FoN or those songs as singles?
Just Breathe has proved that it works. And the punky Sum41-esque rockers could work very well. So Supersonic or Got Some!
