Shouldn't be too difficult to find a new stadium for gigs once Giants Stadium closes, don't you think?

When we found the things we loved,
They were crushed and dying in the dirt.
We tried to pick up the pieces,
And get away without getting hurt,
But they caught us at the state line,
And burned our cars in one last fight,
And left us running burned and blind,
    Chasing something in the night.

If you are going on the 3rd, meet me in the parking lot, we will be tailgaiting.
If it was on a weekend and the only area show, I think they would sell it out.

yep, last night.....a colleague of mine was there and was just telling me about it this morning. she loved the show, said she had a great time. :)

that said, no, i do not think pearl jam could sell out giants stadium. i also think it does not matter in the least. also, i hate giants stadium, so i hope they never play there in any case.

oh, i forgot giants stadium is closing down, hahaha...don't care much about sports so pay little attention to such things. eh well then, never have to worry about pj there! ;)

It depends on the long-term success of Backspacer. As of right now, they have a number 1 record. If this last of few weeks, the buzz will grow and more people(new customers) will be turned on to Pearl Jam.

Could PJ sell-out Giants Stadium? Reason I ask is because U2 is in town now and has 3 concerts sold-out. I don't think PJ could do it. They've shied away from marketing themselves for too long whereas U2 has had an iPod tie-in and now BlackBerry.

I think if they were into marketing themselves and doing everything possible to appeal to the pop kids like U2, they could have done it. The funny thing about that statement "appealing to the pop kids" is that I remember years and years ago Bono saying in an interview that they didn't care if the pop kids liked them or not... I guess he changed his mind...

What does everyone else think? Could PJ sell-out Giants Stadium? If yes, could they do it for 3 straight nights?

"Pop kids" are not what allows U2 to sell out stadiums. For one thing, teenagers and most twentysomethings would be hard-pressed to afford a ticket for U2, not to mention the fact that U2's music is pretty squarely targeted at adults. Every U2 tour is a spectacle. When you add that to 30 years of great music, you're going to be a big draw at the box office.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.
  • Depends...how much notice are they going to give?

If they do it like the tours of 2006, 2008, & 2009...no way.
    hippiemom = goodness
  • however they could sell out the Linc in Philly...
  • I went to the U2 show last night, they said it was a record setting night for the stadium with 80K.

hmm, i dunno. Pearl Jam did play to some 60,000 down at Bonnaroo, but that's a little different that being the headliner of a football stadium

anybody have attendance figures for Penn State? That's probally the closet comparison for a pass US PJ show.

U2 smashed the house record tonight at Giants Stadium. The previous attendance record was held by Pope John Paul II after his visit to the stadium in 1995.

With gig goers in excess of 84472 it was a fantastic night at Giants. Speaking from the stage at the end of the night Bono said, "News just in. We've broken every record for attendance in this stadium - including the Pope. Sorry Bruce - we know its your birthday and all". Before adding later, "I know they're knocking this place down...we probably won't be here again before the wrecking ball but it was a magic place for us as well as the Giants"

  • No. The max people they could probably draw for a show would be 35-40k, probably a ballpark size, and it would need to be a special venue in a major metro area that they've drawn well from historically: Philly, Chicago, Boston, NYC. Seattle. While they can sell out multiple nights of shows at those venues, how many of those people are seeing mulitple shows. No way they could get stadium size for just one night, they're just not that mainstream popular enough anymore. But that's nothing to cry about because the acts that could sell out a football stadium lie on one hand, maybe a hand and a half.
