PEARLS BEFORE SWINE: JAM LOOKS TO BOW #1
Target/Indie/iTunes Exclusive Should Sell Around 200k, Three Days Grace Debuts

September 23, 2009

Never mind the fact McKenzie Phillips slept with her dad, Papa John.

The real story is the new Pearl Jam album, on its own Monkeywrench label, but using a distribution coalition that includes Target, iTunes, Verizon mobile wireless, Harmonix/MTV’s Rock Band and CIMS indie retailers, which will sell around 200k of Backspacer, giving them the edge to bow at #1 on next week’s HITS album chart.

That’s based on one-day sales information from our own secret cabal of retail spies who moonlight undercover for children’s protective services in their spare time. Wonder what they think of “California Dreaming” now.

awesome. i assume it will only stay there one week.
  • They would have been #1 with S/T if they didn't decide to go against Tool.

I think they'll break 200k easy. will be interesting

Does this mean that they sold 200k in one day!? If this is the case, would they not be on track for outselling s/t because it (self titled) was released on a Tuesday and sales are supposedly from Monday to Sunday? I would think Backspacer would push more than 270k (as self titled did) if given a normal release date. Is this correct?

No, they're expected to sell 200k based on first day sales.

Self titled sold around 275k in its first week.
10,000 days crushed it and sold more than 600k.

Pearl Jam On Track To Top Billboard 200
    September 23, 2009 - Retail

    By Keith Caulfield, L.A.

Pearl Jam is on course to nab its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in 13 years. Industry prognosticators suggest the band's new "Backspacer," released on Sunday (Sept. 20), could sell anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week's end. That sales figure should easily place it ahead of the competition on next week's Billboard 200 chart.

The new album -- its first not with a major label -- is sold exclusively in the United States through Target, iTunes, Pearl Jam's Web site and independent retailers.

The group's last studio release, 2006's self-titled J Records set, bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 279,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan in its first week. The band last graced the No. 1 slot way back in 1996, when "No Code" became its third chart-topper when it debuted in the penthouse.

Since "No Code," the group has notched three No. 2 albums ("Yield," "Binaural" and "Pearl Jam") and a No. 5 set with "Riot Act" in 2002.

Other albums looking to enter high on the Billboard 200 chart next week include Three Days Grace's "Life Stars Now," Five Finger Death Punch's "War is the Answer," David Gray's "Draw the Line" and Mika's "The Boy Who Knew Too Much."

Next week's Billboard 200 album chart will be revealed on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Things look good in Europe too btw.

Yeah, Backspacer is currently the 4th best seller on amazon.co.uk, and number 5 on play.com's top sellers list. Pretty good going.
  • and a No. 5 set with "Riot Act" in 2002.

brings a tear to my eye :/

But nice that it's selling. Anyone know how it's doing in Sweden?
