Just Breathe

Yes I understand that every life must end, aw huh,..
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh,..
I’m a lucky man to count on both hands
The ones I love,..

Some folks just have one,
Others they got none, aw huh,..

Stay with me,..
Let’s just breathe.

Practiced are my sins,
Never gonna let me win, aw huh,..
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh,..
Yeh, I don’t wanna hurt, there’s so much in this world
To make me bleed.

Stay with me,..
You’re all I see.

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see,..
No one knows this more than me.
As I come clean.

I wonder everyday
as I look upon your face, aw huh,..
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, aw huh,..
Nothing you would take,..
Everything you gave.

Did I say that I need you?
Oh, Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see,..
No one know this more than me.
As I come clean.

Nothing you would take,..
everything you gave.
Hold me till I die,..
Meet you on the other side.

this is the one song, from the get-go, first listen....that i utterly love, love, love from backspacer. just perfection! superb.....luminous....amazing...what lyrics.....*sighs*....what lyrics!

  • It was my first love on this album, too ... but I'm starting to get eyes for other songs, too. :)
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • This is truly a beautiful song.
I am reminded of the movie "Into the Wild".

absolutely, very much so....definitely sounds like an into the wild outtake. i am ok with that. this, unthought unknown, the end....even amongst the waves to a certain extent,i get that vibe a bit. thus why i also find backspacer a wee bit uneven, b/c i think it is quite split between the itw vibe and a ramones/punk vibe, but i digress from the greatness that is just breathe..... 8-)

i am too, but they all came, or are coming, more slowly. just breathe was WOW instantaneously, so i have to show it some love.

yeah the first listen for me was quite an impact...i had to pause when amongst the waves started

    to paraphrase bobby jones:

ed writing is something with which I am not familiar

  • This is a great song. The guitar is like track #6 for into the wild. A song with no lyrics. Eddie switched it up a bit and put great words to it. I always love that guitar part.
  • so beautiful..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

Exactly! This was definitely one of my faves from the start!

  • Stunning lyrics. Beautiful and haunting and just beautiful. I was hooked on this song on the first listen. really like amongst the waves too.
  • Is this Ed's first love song?
I feel like it is personal in nature & written to 1 person (i.e. his wife).

I can't think of any others. I'm pretty sure "You are..." is Matt's writing. Just a thought to throw out there.
Regardless, the song is beautiful, so heartfelt and real. Typical Eddie. I think adding string arrangements for this song and The End work great.

firstly, ed is not married....but sure, for his S.O. no doubt. ;)
did ed not write hail, hail? so certainly not his first....and i think there are other, less obvious, 'love songs' penned by ed. i do agree this is one of the more plainly obvious tho, absolutely...

i actually would prefer this song even more barebones a la into the wild, but really that's just being uber-picky. ;) the song is perfection.

  • Thanks for the response. I really felt that "Just Breathe" was just like his Into the Wild songs off the start, but then when the strings came in I appreciated the extra level.
Chacun son gout (To each their own).
I see they played Just Breathe & The End in Seattle. I'll see them at Austin City Limits, hopefully they'll play one or both.
  • So my wife is a casual PJ fan (and that is a stretch), in truth she likes a few songs, but music is not one of her passions. In fact, I have always suspected that she doesn't "get" my love for music and more specifically my love PJ's music. Tonight, I am going through show withdrawal after the past 2 shows (amazing, esp. night 2) and was playing the new disc. When Just Breath came on, I handed my wife the liner notes. By the end of the song she was in tears and simply said "beautiful". I feel like there was a breakthrough. Just felt like sharing.

I love everything about this song: the sound, the words, the emotional content. I think it is a perfect song. :)

Hmmmm, another Other Side reference. I'm not much younger than them, and the other side is still not a place to me. However, in this song and the other song with the Other Side reference, (Binaural?) it seems like a place.

Yippee! I was able to get my CD to work, but the artwork and setlist that comes up on my computer player are the Pearl Jam CD (ie. #8)

i know the obvious, and likely though to the 'other side' is always death.....but i oftentimes think of it as something magical. no matter what, i'll meet you on the other side, etc. i also think of the astronauts who flew/fly to the moon, and the 'flip side'...the other side...of the moon. b/c while on the 'dark side of the moon' communications are cut off until they reach the other side. of course, there is also the 'flip side' reference for record albums, and so on. my point? that 'other side'......even if death......can be seen as a positive. and sure, for the record, i really don't think of death 'positively' per se....but somehow, discuss the 'other side' and i oftentimes do. *whew!*

I think the other side could also be the collective consciousness. Or, maybe where people go when they sleep?

while on the 'dark side of the moon' communications are cut off until they reach the other side.
Now, i didn't even think of this. So the other side could be the ability to communicate again. If 2 people are in a disaster of some sort be it a natural disaster or man made, and they make it to the Other Side, then they are reunited. They have the ability to communicate again. It's like coming out of a tunnel.

justam....yes! the dream world! of course, there it is...no wonder i always think, *magical*.....! thus why i say, once again....like so many things, period, but most definitely ed's amazing lyrics, there are just OH so many ways to *see*....and i do think, especially depending on your own state of mind, positive ANd negative, can simultanously be present in a lot of the lyrics. and what can i say? i'm a dreamer, and so more often than not...i see the positive.

The same here. My soon-to-be-husband isn't that passionat about PJ as I am (but saw almost as much concerts). When I heard Just Breathe for the first time, I really wanted the song at our wedding ceremony. But my boyfriend thought of it more as a funeral song. Don't agree. In my opinion it's a great love song.
  • Marieke: It is a definitely a love song. Also, I think Unthought Known is an amazing love song. We played Fire and Ice (Ben Harper) at our wedding, getting my wife to have a PJ song in the wedding would have been a tough sell.
  • @Seattle1974: well, Just Breathe didn't make it. We agreed on Incubus (Are you in), Smashing Pumpkins (Today) and a Dutch singer :D
To get Pearl Jam on that list wouldn't be the best start of our marriage ;)

exactly,,i think the same about unthough known

    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
  • I see myself enjoying this song in a PJ concert 10 years from now with the same enthusiasm as for the likes of Betterman, Alive, etc. Brilliant :D

When Just Breathe hits the radio non PJ followers will think thats Pearl Jam ???
It really doesn't even sound that much like ED the way he hits the lyrics
was my favorite too at first
    its a beautiful song

I would also love to have played a PJ song in my wedding, but unfortunately to say that my wife isn't a big PJ fan is an euphemism... And for a wedding even the Last Kiss card couldn't win. We settled for Better Together (Jack Johnson) ;)
  • one of the greatest love songs ever written, especially coming from a man's perspective. ie, men are basically screw ups, and the line "practiced are my sins, never gonna let me win, aw huh" really hits home for me, a man with a wife and two kids whose spouse has tolerated my "sins" and stood by me at times when she had reason to bolt.

and eddie said the song is about the quiet time you spend with the one you love after the kids go to bed. i can relate to that so much too. that time is so short and meaningful.
