Just Breathe climbing the ITunes charts

Okay, so I checked this morning and noted that Just Breathe has climbed to #14 on the ITunes rock charts, with two versions of The Fixer at #10 and #11. My question is: WHY is Just Breathe charting so high? I am not doubting that it deserves it, it's a wonderful song, but I'm wonder what has happened to raise awareness about this tune? Was it featured on television in some way I am not aware of?

If it keeps climbing like this, PJ may need to take notice and realize it might be the next single.

I thought there was a post earlier about it being on the radio somewhere. LA I think. That might explain it...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

My impression was that that was a one-time airing of side A of the album. I am not sure that can account for this.
  • Someone on my facebook page (who is not a pj fan) messaged me and said that they just heard "Just Breathe" and said they loved it enough to go buy the album.... pretty cool!
He who forgets, will be destined to remember...
  • Now at #9, Fixer at #1 again. Glad to see The Fixer going back to the top, but it's Just Breathe that's really surprising me. Is it just word of mouth that's driving the song? Poeole playing the album for friends who then go out and download this song? It's not die-hard fans that are downloading only individual tracks, after all.
  • Could be another sleeper ala "Last Kiss." People like sad songs.

Got Some or Amongst the Waves will be the next single (if any) though.
    So this life is sacrifice...

  • My friend who kinda lost interest in PJ after Yield (and a subpar Knoxville show didnt help either) texted me and said he loves Backspacer. Just Breathe was a highlight for him.

Yeah. Could happen. I know a few stations have added it. With the way things go "viral" nowadays, maybe it will spread?

I know this is a taboo term in the Pearl Jam fanbase, but I could see this being a "crossover" hit.

However, I think it's more likely that PJ will release just one more single and it will be moderately successful, though not as successful as The Fixer. That seems to be the well-established pattern with their post-Vitalogy releases. I'd love to be proven wrong on this, though.
  • how do you find this info out about itunes??

    should be number 1
  • I think its down to about 87 now.... actually that was top downloads.. not rock so dont know where it is this morning after all.
  • this song is spreading like wildfire via word of mouth. it is a song that anybody can love - PJ fans as well as the misguided (like my wife). she loves it, and really doesn't like 90% of PJ's songs. If it's promoted correctly, it could be a HUGE hit.

I heard Last Kiss this morning on my drive into work and I'm thinking to myself, hmm what was it about this song that made it such a huge hit... It's just such a simple tune and it isn't even PJ's song it's a cover. Then I just contemplated "hmm maybe it is because you can clearly hear every word that Eddie sings in this song" because that just isn't the case with most of the PJ songs and the same applies to "just breath" so with that correlation, I could see this one being as big as "Last Kiss", cuz it's a better song...

well, it's that and the subject matter of last kiss - people love a sappy love song that tells a story like that. people of all ages and demographics can "get it". same with just breathe, but yes, just breathe is way better
  • WOW, I just heard from a friend who was at last night's Seattle show that they played "Just Breath" there and brought out a string quartet to accompany the band (rumour is that Matt Cameron's wife may have been of the performers). This was only for the Seattle shows though... bummer.
  • i hate when a new album comes out and everyone jumps on a certain song declaring it the new Black.

So with that said, THIS IS THE NEW BLACK! its an amazing song.

Whenever I listen to a PJ album for the first time, there's always one song that stands out and that I remember and am humming to myself once the album ends. Just Breathe was the stand out song on Backspacer for me. I have a feeling it will be for a lot of the casual listeners too.

This song really is climbing the iTunes charts.....The Fixer is about #25 and Just Breathe is around #85. And we're talking top 100 songs on iTunes, not the rock charts.

To me it's just simply that good. Word of mouth is still the most powerful means of supporting a record. Everyone I have played this song for falls in love with it.

Just Breath doesn't seem a sad song to me... actually the opposite...
Ed is embracing his own mortality rather than fearing it... :P
Makes me ache, makes me shake...
...is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?
  • In the Canadian store, Just Breathe is #42 and The Fixer is at #57 on the singles charts.

And Backspacer is the #1 album.
  • I heard that they were playing it on the radio out this way (MA)
  • Wow it really is climbing....#6 on iTunes rock charts...that's pretty damn good for not being a single.
  • Just Breathe has now moved up to 66 on iTunes (all singles)!

Yeah. i think the band may really have something here. I wonder if they have someone looking at this kind of stuff for them?

I can't remember any non-singles from s/t behaving this way after release.
  • #79 right now out of the top 100 songs.
