Basically, what have they done that sounds like Revenge off of Dark Night of the Soul. I have an inkling I might really like this band.

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    :D

Oh yeah, to answer your Q:

I have 1993 "Transmissions", 1995s "Clouds Taste Metallic" and "Yoshimi".

I think theyre all good albums, but I listen to Yoshimi more than the other two. Give it a spin.

I unfortunately have not heard that song on teh sound track so it is hard for me to comment towards what sounds like that.

The Soft Bulletin though is a great album and easy on the ears.

  • I'm obviously going to say The Soft Bulletin (one of my top five albums of all time), but as an introduction that can be a bit tricky because no matter which way you go after that you will end up wishing it was more like that album.

I have all their stuff and the early albums are just so raw compared to where they're at now. I really think they peaked at The Soft Bulletin and even though Yoshimi was a strong followup, it still wasn't as good IMO.

I sorta agree. Their early stuff is VERY different from what the band has become. I don't really care for pre-Transmission albums. But the Soft Bulletin is an incredible album and I really like Yoshimi. Still, I wouldn't recommend starting at the beginning with the Flaming Lips... they were kinda unremarkable at first and I have a hard time believing it would sound anything like a song they've done in the past few years (haven't heard the song referenced).
  • I would say go to the crossroads of their career with Transmissions From the Satellite Heart or The Clouds Taste Metallic. It gives you a good mix of their punk roots and phsychedelic future.

I'm a fan of their entire catalogue, but I can see how people who are fans of the Soft Bulletin and onward wouldn't be.

Yeah, Soft Bulletin is the place to start.

After that, get Yoshimi, and also Priest Driven Ambulance for a good taste of early Lips (or Clouds Taste Metallic).
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

  • Personally here's the order I would go in if you're looking to listen to all of their albums...

    Soft Bulletin

    Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

    Transmissions from the Satellite Heart

    Clouds Taste Metallic

    At War with Mystics

    In A Priest Driven Ambulance

Hit to Death in the Future Head

Finally the Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid ( This is a 3 disc compilation contains the Flaming Lips EP, plus their first 3 albums)

Zaireeka - you could probably skip this but I'd suggest to poke around online and find a good mix of all 4 discs, it's really worth a listen, even just once
  • you forgot about the Mushroom Tapes

  • you forgot about the Mushroom Tapes

I guess you're right... but the songs on the mushroom tapes are kind of just earlier takes on tracks from Priest Driven Ambulance... there's a compilation you could pick up w/ both albums, the name escapes me right now, I believe there's a lot of bonus tracks too... you could listen to it along with In a Priest Driven Ambulance.
  • The Day They Shot the Hole in the Jesus Egg

That's the name... It's been a while since I've listened to the mushroom tapes. I have that compilation on my old PC hard drive... where ever that is lol.

Don't download the leak for Embyonic (new album out oct 6) :D

I really like that album, but if that was my first experience with the band i would probably never try anything else.

I really liked that song they played on colbert, album seems like it might be down my alley. I guess I should have mentioned that I have Transmissions from a Sattelite Heart and I thought it was just ok

has anyone gotten this in a store yet? best buy has 2 versions listed... one a 2cd-dvd combo, and the other looks to just be a cd. i thought it was a double album? i dont know how much i care about the dvd, but i definitely want the full cd and $7.99 seems way to cheap if their basic version is a double album. is the second disc just bsides or outtakes or something?

I know that the "double CD" was well under 80 minutes combined and could fit on one, so maybe they just did that as a budget-minded alternative because it was all new original songs on both discs so I don't know how they would decide what to leave off.
  • the New album deluxe comes in a giant furry space alien vagina- AMAZING! it also sounds a lot better than the past 3 records on the stream- that yoshi battles robots crap.

yoshi was awesome! i hope you're not including the soft bulletin in that category... must be the 4-disc zereeka or whatever.

you were right. the single album is the full album put on one disc. i think for the other set you get a cool box, the album split up, and the dvd. i opted for just the music. i'm not sure what to make of it yet. there were some pretty incredible moments on my first listen, but also a lot of tripped out space rock. it's an album so psychedelic pink floyd would be jealous. which is why i was surprised i didn't feel more into it last night.
