For me its Johnny Guitar by a mile

Its not because its not "Pearl Jam" enough or anything. I just really don't think its that great of a song, I understand what Ed was trying to do with the vocals but I just don't think it works very well. The rest of Backspacer is fucking amazing.

Johnny Guitar is an awesome track! One of my favorites on the new record.

There really isn't a bad song, but "Speed of Sound" is just ok.

Speed Of Sound because of the full band thing doesn't do it for me, then Gonna See My Friend - not digging it as an opener. Mostly because of track listing though - the album should have went 1. Got Some 2. Supersonic 3. The Fixer 4. Gonna See My Friend 5. Just Breathe 6. Amongst The Waves 7. Unthought Known 8. Johnny Guitar 9. Speed Of Sound 10. Force of Nature 11. The End. If you have an ipod, listen to it in that order. The album seems to jump out a little more, and doesn't kill Supersonic like so many people do - that song kicks balls.

Johnny Guitar's boss, man. Very Costello-ish, and I like that. If there is only one song on this album that shows this band trying something totally different, it's that song. And that's one of the main things I look for in their albums - not just the same rehashed stuff, but instead mixing it up.

  • Speed of Sound.... demo is far better.
  • I like Johnny Guitar.

Least favorites are Fixer, Force of Nature, and Speed of Sound. Love the rest.
  • I my first run-through of the album I was all ready to say Supersonic, until I hit about the 1:20 mark, THEN the breakdown hit. My god. I almost got up and danced.

Now I don't know what's least favorite. Too soon to tell.

I'm sure I'll catch some heat for this and I can't pinpoint it but for some reason JG hits a White Stripes chord with me. I've only listened to the song twice (streaming on myspace) but it was there both times. Am I way off with this?

I am going to give this order a shot while I listen on my way to work tonight, looks like I could agree to this.

  • Speed of Sound has the worst lyrics on the album.

"It's hard to remember anything moving at the Speed of Sound". I knew the lyrics would be contrived based on the album title when I read them 2 months ago. I always wondered how Ed could sign on to the closing lyrics of Inside Job now (Let me run into the rain..)..... because he thinks they were good! :D

But all in all I am relieved by Backspacer, it's really only SOS and the Fixer that are mediocre or boring. The ballads are not my favorite, but Unthought,GSMF,Got Some,Johnny Guitar and the rest are really good songs that I look forward to seeing live.
  • least fav is prolly The Fixer.

I'm tellin ya. Comes out with a lot more force, and doesn't mess with the momentum of going up and then down, then middle, then down again. Good stuff. HEY ,BRENDAN! TAKE NOTE! ;)

I don't know - as it's been referenced. I whole-heartedly agree with the Costello comparison.

You say "wow" to that as if not liking Unthought Known makes me weird or something. It's a boring Love Boat Captain rewrite.

The rest of the album Matt Cameron absolutely kicks ass.

"Unthought Known" is easily one of the best songs on the album.

I have a feeling this will be a live staple that will get you when you see it at a show. It does have a slight LBC tinge to it, but only the best of that mixed with some Light Years with a more urgent pace.
