great hit, caught crossing open ice in the trolley tracks and boom. pre -season or not, you dont skate there. phaneuf is laying it down early. good for him. the D-core that calgary is gonna skate with this is year is tremendous. look for more like this to come this season.
he left the ice and gave Okposo an elbow to the face. it's not clean, but i understand being blinded by fandom, so i wont kill you for it.
he didn't leave the ice... if you pause it at the contact, Phaneuf's feet are on the ice. Okposo's head was down and leaning forward from being shoved a little from behind right before that.
I agree that there was no need for the hit and classless to do that in a preseason game, but the hit was clean (maybe minus a little bit because Phaneuf should have realized that Okposo was in a bit of a defenseless position from being shoved).

clean hit.. keep your head up kid... and I didn't see Phaneuf run away from anyone
The argument isn't weather or not its a clean hit, its September, there is no need for that in preseason, its not like Phaneuf is a scrub trying to play his way on to the team by showing them he can deliver bone crunching open ice hits, we know he can. His spot is already secure. Also, he was clearly backing away from the foight and then refused to drop his gloves when Morency finally got his hands on him.

That's Phaneuf's game though. He's opportunistic and he never lets up on anyone who is in a vulnerable position. The day that he tries to square up someone who sees him coming or lets up on a guy who can't protect himself is the same day that I will give this scrub an ounce of respect.
Clean hit. If Dion doesn't go for the check there, he is not an NHL defencemen. And that is regardless of regular season, pre-season, or playoffs.
In minor hockey, I once laid a kid out cold at center ice after he had just received a pass from a defenceman and had been looking back for it. I didn't feel too good about him lying on the ice and the trainer waking him up with smelling salts, but in no way was it my fault. He made a conscious decision to skate blindly forward.
When you go to make a hit in any contact sport, you can't sit and wonder if the recipient knows you are coming. You can avoid hits to the back. You can avoid clipping (in football). You can avoid hitting the kicker. But you can't tell definitively, at a split-second notice if the person is looking up or down. Your job is to make the hit. Their job is to take it, and if they have been taught the game of hockey, then they have been taught the first rule is to keep your head up.
Okposa may as well have just as well walked across a busy street without looking both ways.
Telling Phaneuf to let up on a hit is like telling a trained guard dog to stop an intruder without biting...he probably wouldn't understand wtf you were talking about .... if he did, and followed your command, he'd be rendered useless.
Phaneuf is just warming his game up for regular season. He has to practice too....I saw nothing wrong with the hit...in fact, it was a thing of beauty. I do think it's unfortunate that this kid was vulnerable at the time...but that's not Phaneuf's fault.
I think Phaneuf should have dropped the gloves, but since that clown came off the bench, i don't think it is exactly a requirement.
This is coming from an Oilers fan who hates the Flames with a passion.
However, it was a clean hit. In those instances lets say 6/10 The Dion gets burnt and an instant 2 on 1 for a goal (check last year's high-lights) he does this time and time again. The most over-rated defenceman in the league.

Well said BRY. I after watching the hit a few times I agree with your assessment.
I think this head was down that far because he had just been shoved from behind and that put him in a vulnerable position.
I also agree that it was a clean hit and regardless of whether or not its preseason...everyone is competing for a job. For some people that job is MAKING the team...for others is advancing from say the 3rd line to the 2nd or 1st line...or for people like Dion its to KEEP yourself on the 1st line. To do this you gotta go hard EVERY SHIFT...and that means making the big hits when necessary.
I hope that Okposo is ok and is back playing soon.
As for Theo...I hope that he has a successful comeback and that not only does he stay sober, but I hope that he dealt with his demons. I dunno if you all know, but it was alleged that he was the other player molested by that douchebag, Pedophille coach that molested Sheldon Kennedy. I've heard that its true...and if so I hope that he's received the psychological treatment he needs and now has the tools to live a more full and happy life.

Dion's having trouble keeping himself on the first line? I guess that hit hurt Dion's chances to stay on the first line because he was scratched the next game. It definitely didn't have anything to do with the Flames being afraid of allowing Dion to face the music for his necessary big hit on a vulnerable player in a pre-season game.

That clown didn't come off for a line change, he came off for a fight. He's suspended for it.

i actually didnt realize you're from Vancouver ... it's all good cause now I hate the Flames too.

you've got more balls than Phaneuf.
Was hoping to see him make it.
