I'm not going to do a top five, but I can tell you that Pearl Jam wouldn't make it.

Not true. They are in several here.

That would be my list, if we're going by most influential. My personal top 5 would be PJ/Dead/Phish/Petty/Bruce.

If you're including single artists, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan....

I'm actually in favor of a law saying if you are American and don't like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, you should have your citizenship revoked. More importantly Bruce, though.

I like Bruce for the most part, but if anyone's citizenship is revoked, it should be his after the farce of a halftime show during the Super Bowl. I felt embarrassed to be watching it and I was embarrassed for him too.

    2) The Jimi Hendrix Experience... no doubt about that again.

    4) Nirvana... made my youth getting stronger....

    5) Pearl Jam .... made it all better... :D and still the keep on rocking in a free world....

But there are so many great American Rock Bands... CCR is also in between 1 and 3... make it 2.5

    Pearl Jam
    My Morning Jacket
    Black Crowes
    Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
after that, I don't know... Talking Heads, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Allmans, Skynyrd, The Band... hard to choose.

I personally don't consider the Jimi Hendrix Experience an American band, otherwise, I'd definitely put them up there.

10 years ago I'm sure I would have had Soundgarden and Alice in Chains in there. Probably Tool too. Fuck, I'm such a pussy now.
  • With Pearl Jam as a given, and being as New Kids on the Block are more pop than rock:

No see, I can't do this list either.

first of all, no offense, but if you were from the states you would know who wilco is. if you were a rock music junkie, even though you're not from the states, although i could be wrong, i would think you would know who wilco is. either way, maybe a list of the best american rock bands is something that would be better determined by americans. not that i mind your input or anything, just sayin....and the jimi hendrix experience was from england excluding hendrix himself. i guess throwing hendrix on there is like me throwing dylan on the list, so i can't really argue too much, but that's not exactly an american rock band.

i see guns n roses on a lot of lists, to me they had their time in the late 80's and early 90's, but were unable to keep it together. obviously they had some hits, wrote some great songs, but most of their music sounds dated to me. i find it hard to justify putting them on a top 5 list.

How bout Band of Gypsy's for Hendrix, then?

People always say that Hendrix didn't make it big til he when to England......Who cares? Who cares he made a name for himself in the states enough for somebody in England to be interested.

Led Zeppelin was big in the states before they were big in the UK. Are they American?
