top 5 american rock bands of all time

i was just thinking about who are considered the greatest bands of rock, and it dawned on me that most of them are british, (the classics anyway). so yeah, i can make a list like this one and it's actually pretty legit. obviously peoples opinions will vary, but there is no beatles or stones that you a forced to throw on it. anyway, here's my list, and yes i'm going to include dylan even though he's not a band, just because he's the best ever.

1. bob dylan
2. grateful dead
3. pearl jam
4. wilco
5. my morning jacket

my morning jacket is really the only reach on here in my opinion, but if you've ever seen their live show you may be convinced.

some honorable mentions, springsteen & e street, ccr, jefferson airplane, velvet underground (american?), sonic youth, who else?, i'm drawing a blank. it's tougher than you would think, that british invasion really took the u.s. by storm. there's a lot of great newer bands, but it'd be a stretch to put them on a top 5 list.

although i cheated and listed dylan, i'm trying to keep this to bands.

  • good list (not a dead fan really but they gotta be there)

    some others to add...

    REM
    Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
    Aerosmith (not a fan)
Lynard Skynard (again not a fan)
    The Eagles (meh)
    Beach Boys
  • great thread. A head scratcher because as you said most of the ones on the top of the list The Beatles, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, The Who and so on are British.

I dont know. Do you think america has had fewer HUGE bands on the scale of the bands I just mentioned than Britain or other locales?
  • Any attempt at a list like this that does not include R.E.M. cannot be taken seriously. I don't mean that as I slight, I'm assuming they just didn't come to mind when you came up with this. And I love Wilco with a passion that most will never feel for anything in their lives, but it's a tad premature to include them. Same obviously goes for MMJ. Way too early.

I know they have sucked for the last two decades, but I think Aerosmith has to be included as well. Hell, I'd even put Cheap Trick in over Grateful Dead.

My list off the top of my head probably goes:

    R.E.M.
    Pearl Jam
    Aerosmith
    Metallica
    Cheap Trick

although i'm not really a big fan of any of them, those are good ones that need to be mentioned. can't believe i didn't think of any of them. especially petty, beach boys, and rem.

i understand what you are saying, and yeah, might be too early for mmj, but not for wilco. you include pearl jam, but wilco came out only 3 years after them. wilco has released 7 albums not including the mermaid avenue discs. that stretch from being there - a ghost is born is one of the greatest runs of classic albums any band has put out. i'd say they deserve to be included.......can't believe i forgot about metallica too?! although again, i'm not really a fan of them.

You know, that's a great question, why haven't they? I know that's a whole new thread.

    1. Pearl Jam - Could have been as big as U2 if they had gone full scale promotion and not shied away videos etc.d

    2. Aerosmith

    3. Nirvana

    4. Doors

    5. Tom Petty

    Really no particular order.

    1. Michael Franti & Spearhead

    2. Pearl Jam

    3. Van Halen

    4. The Eagles

    5. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals

Honorable Mention....Rgage Against the Machine, Green Day, Megadeth, Metallica, Living Colour, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Doors, Smashing Pumpkins

  • 1. The Doors - Nobody comes close for me, even of the British bands.
    2. The Grateful Dead - Not all of their material is listenable, but when they're on, they are very, very good.
    3. Pearl Jam - Longevity and an incredible string of hits in their early career give them the nod over other artists from the same era.
    4. Wilco - Band of this decade, for sure. The fact that they have made great albums from 1996-2009 gives them a legitimate spot on this list.
    5. Talking Heads - Tried to throw a bit of a curveball here, but they are a great band with an extensive catalogue.

Obviously there are lots of honourable mentions. I didn't include Bob Dylan because it said "rock band" and I tried to stick to that. Metallica had a great stretch in the 80s but made a joke of themselves in the 20 years after ...And Justice For All. I wouldn't hold it against anyone for including AIC, Nirvana, or Soundgarden.

Yes I really think the Doors have to be included here.

I agree i think the brits dominated the 60's and 70's but the rest has been on our side of the pond :)

Right now, without fervently studying my collection and sweating over this, here's my list:

    The Doors
    Pearl Jam
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
    Wilco
    R.E.M.

There are a lot of bands or artists I think of as more a solo artist than a band that would be part of the list if the definition was different, ie. Elvis, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, possibly John Mellencamp, hell probably Sinatra. For whatever reason there are so many great British "bands", but not as many great "artists", with American music it's more the other way around. As in the very best, not just great.

Better get it soon. The initial run is limited and they may not include both albums in the future. The green vinyl is neato.
