I have to say if this is what he said I completely disagree with Eddie on this. The music industry is changing, rapidly. Whether or not the band likes it. Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead etc are all moving forward with new ideas on how to release their music and still make money. Pearl Jam has been great with that in the past with stuff like the ten club etc.
The sad truth is that people are going to take music for free if they can. It is going to eventually come to a head where bands are going to have to try something new. The re-issues are a start. They're going to make a bundle from them. Hiking up ticket prices is a great way to piss off your fan base like us who provide a great deal of their money and buy the merch and the music.
Come up with new ideas guys. PPV live concerts, or do something like idlewild and whoever pre-orders the album gets their name on the sleeve. These are revolutionary. They're just smart business and I think hiking up prices just because the music industry has changed means you aren't changing with it.

and I have often said that as long as people freely trade and download music, I will not begrudge the band for charging more for shows, especially since they continue to reject any corporate sponsorship
either that or you're gonna have to start accepting sponsorships, or start selling your music to Viagra. I'm not sure how we'll do it.
Indeed this is old, and I've been saying this for years the reason ticket prices are going up is because lots of people are stealing the music and not paying for it. As long as you bought the CD or LP, I think you have a clean conscience if you DL it too.
OH, and the song was ALIVE that Viagra approached PJ to use in a commercial. ...they're basically sponsored by Verizon now, and at times Bud Light, but hopefully not Viagra.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

That quote is a joke right? $70-80 a ticket is not necessarily cheap or on the low end of things. They're not outright fucking their fans by any means, but I would call that average or slightly above average.
I'm sure Ed can spring $9.50 for eggs. Merchandise is right. They made a killing off the super deluxe Tens not to mention the usual stuff sold around here and at the shows. Album sales are one tiny factor and they're even gonna make a killing off THAT now too with the $5 a pop at Target.

Exactly. I know this article is a couple years old, but EV complaining about not getting the money he deserves? Funny how people change from giving their money away to suddenly complaining their not getting their fair share. Whether having kids has anything to do with it, who knows. I have a child and I've had the same attitude about money as I've always had. It doesn't buy happiness.
The band's management could certainly be innovative in how they market the band. The current strategy is traditional and no wonder there's complaining about ticket price, merchandise and shipping price, stealing the music, etc. Come up with innovative strategies to compete with the likes of other bands, and money wouldn't be as much an issue as this article suggests. Just raising the price higher never makes the consumer happy. Incentives do.

I know. I don't have a problem with it though. Everything costs more than it did a couple of years ago, except maybe gas.
I bet they make more money of Backspacer than the previous couple of records though just because of the fact that they are self-releasing.
