Can we release PJ to be optimistic and positive?
It's hard to make a song about making things better without it sounding poppy
Although there is some dancing on graves and celebrating this wild ass lifetime
sometimes the sun comes out and it makes you happy no matter how pissed you are
I can see people not liking a song for whatever their reason, but I don't understand why it should bug anyone.
The band has been around for almost 20 years now. If a more pop-centric single is going to make anyone self conscious about their street cred at this point in the game I just have to shake my head and smile.
i see what you're saying, but it's because pearl jam has never been like that. (for the vast majority of their career, anyway).
i'm not saying they can't go that route; they can if they want to...as you said they've been together almost 20 years, they can pretty much do whatever they want.
however, i just have never associated pearl jam with pop music. it's like, if i want to listen to pop music, i'll listen to pop music....the whole point of listening to pearl jam, particularly the more underrated less commercial albums is/was to get away from that.
Depends on your definition of pop, I suppose. If "Elderly Woman..." and "Daughter" aren't pop songs, I don't know what they are. And those are just two examples. Hell, "Better Man" is probably one of the best pop songs of the past 20 years.
Watching that "Making of" featurette on iTunes and seeing how excited the band is about the album and the song got me more excited about the album and the song. To hear from them why it was written the way it was and how much they are enjoying was really refreshing. Same way I felt with the AOL Session for the last album.
Plus, it's a fucking great pop song.
I suggest you step out on your porch...run away my son...see it all...oh see the world // I wait on the porch...hoping someday I'll be let in

I've got a feeling that Backspacer will include a couple of songs that will have a total acoustic, pick-pattern, Into The Wild feel. One song like that, I wouldn't mind...but anymore than that kinda bothers me and here is why:
Backspacer is PJ album, so it would be well worth a full collaboration of Mike, Matt, Jeff, Stone and Ed. If Ed is writing more and more of his style of songs, he should just put out another solo album. It would be adored by all the Eddie obsessers and it may give him the freedom to do WHATEVER he pleases. Plus after Into The Wild, I think a lot of people have been very hungry for more Vedder style music. All I'm saying is that it would just bum me out a little to see that take up space on a PJ album....but hey, my opinion is only important to myself.
Just my thoughts. That being said, I think ITW was great and I'm not bashing on it.
I understand (and agree with) this criticism more then the "it's pop - they sold out" angle. The "Speed of Sound" demo and "Just Breathe" sound like outtakes from ITW and I thought the same thing. I dig Eddie's songs a lot, but what kills with this band is the collaboration. Both Riot Act and Pearl Jam blew me away because of the contributions made from everyone. Hoping that the new album has a similar feel once we hear the whole deal.

i fucking love the fixer i dont know whats wrong with you all. i think it's better than any song on avacado besides come back and inside job. got some on the other hand has the potential to be their best song in yearsss
It's the bridge that rubs me the wrong way, especially the intro into the bridge.
But, the song comes off great live.
really? funny, the bridge part is like my favorite part of the song.
What part of the song is the bridge (minute, second) ? I'm not good with terminology of rock song structure.
hmm, a bit of semantics here maybe but what everyone is calling "the bridge" is what I normally refer to as the middle eight. I consider bridges to be what links the verse to the chorus. In the case of The Fixer this would be when Ed sings "fight to get it back again..."
again, i DO like the song, but it's just...i dunno...
anyone hear me on this?
personally i am with you on this..
when i first heard it i HATED it...
but it has grown on me...
hell, i guess every band has to move on, i was just never into "poppy" music..
personally i hope i like the album, but will always love pj's hard rocking sound ala brain of j, animal etc etc.....

No, bridges are usually distinctly different from the verses and chorus.

Everything changes.. Even Pearl Jam.
Saw it live and loved it. Its happy. Fun. Good message. And people who don't like PJ like it so that's cool too.

...I think this is a good question...its not so obvious to everybody anyway.
About 90 seconds into the song, right after Ed sings:
"...I want to try to love again..."
The bridge part starts right here when he sings:
"why say your prayers I'll take your side.." or something like that ... THAT is the bridge baby!
...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!
