I'm now indifferent. I hated it at first but my 2 year old daughter loves it so I listen to it constantly and it's grown to bearable status for me. I think that it's a pretty safe but forgettable tune though. I don't think that it's one of those ones that I'll discover 5 years from now after I let the album sit on the shelf and collect dust either.

  • As someone who loathed the fixer when I first heard it, I can relate to you. And I posted my feelings about it and got hammered for it. Which is fine. After more listens I have come to really enjoy it...however I really didn't come to like it until I heard the live versions of it. Sounds a lot better to me, particularly less poppy, when they play it live. Download the video for it, and I think you'll agree.
  • I think its okay....Im really looking forward to Just Breathe and The End......and the rest of the album....its going to be awesome!!

It's the bridge that rubs me the wrong way, especially the intro into the bridge.

But, the song comes off great live.

  • still a very good song. the bridge is actually my favorite part.

and dude, just listen to all the backspacer previews. don't you worry or get bugged about a thing. the rest of the album is all very different from that and it sounds pretty much flawless. yes, they are 30 second clips but i can see this being in my top 3 pj albums. can't wait

Absolutely, I've always wished more of the song was like the bridge, I love the lyrics in that part.

What part of the song is the bridge (minute, second) ? I'm not good with terminology of rock song structure.

It's catchy for sure and I felt the same way as you did when I first heard it. It's grown on me with each listen and now I really love it.
Initially I even felt the video was cheesy, but now that too has grown on me and it's all good.

It sounds like it should be on Avacado.

Life Wasted, WWS, Unemployable, The Fixer

I say replace The Fixer with Comatose.

+1 for the bridge being my favorite part, haha...

that said, I have no will power and have heard 30-60 second clips to just about every song and dare I say that The Fixer/Got Some are the two LEAST favorites from what I've heard so far!!!

I'm going nuts with Backspacer-itis, haha.

I'll have to agree, I haven't heard clips of every song but all the clips I have heard...well, it seems like The Fixer and Got Some are going to be the least greatest songs on the album which is saying a lot for Backspacer overall 'cuz I like them both tons!

the bridge kicks in at right about 1:30 into the song.

pj has never been poppier than they are on the fixer. Unemplyable comes close (both matt cameron songs interestingly).

AGREED! This is probably the worst 4 seconds in any Pearl Jam song ever. It sounds like some Walt Disney fairy tale bullshit.

Other than that, I was a supreme hater of this song and the video, and have recently listened / watched it again. I can't say I'm a fan, but I do not loathe this song anymore. I think hearing it live actually helped.
  • I've always had a weak spot for a really good, catchy pop-rock song. Something which, as much as i love almost everything PJ have put their name to, I have kinda missed in the catalogue. But now it's here and, as far as that type of songs go, it's really, really good. Not in my top-10 or anything like that, but I gotta say I really like it.

I realize though, that some people will view it as the boys straying too far of the path, but that's cool. PJ apparently has something for everyone :)

Its 'pop' in a Beatles kind of way though, not in a Nickelback kind of way so I'm down! Maybe they thought "Now we are going solo with this business we need to make some serious bank, what's going on around the time the album is out? The Beatles remasters? Beatles Rockband? I guess I could throw some 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs' on a couple of tracks..."

I enjoy Supersonic more, but I LOVE The Fixer!

Why do people freak out when the band seems happy? This is a great, catchy, uplifting pop/rock song that makes me sing along and feel good! The band seem to like it too, so I'm a happy camper.

There's nothing like a good old fashioned pop song every once in a while. It's not like the PJ catalogue is littered with them.

    Why should it bug anyone?

I can see people not liking a song for whatever their reason, but I don't understand why it should bug anyone.

The band has been around for almost 20 years now. If a more pop-centric single is going to make anyone self conscious about their street cred at this point in the game I just have to shake my head and smile.

i see what you're saying, but it's because pearl jam has never been like that. (for the vast majority of their career, anyway).

i'm not saying they can't go that route; they can if they want to...as you said they've been together almost 20 years, they can pretty much do whatever they want.

however, i just have never associated pearl jam with pop music. it's like, if i want to listen to pop music, i'll listen to pop music....the whole point of listening to pearl jam, particularly the more underrated less commercial albums is/was to get away from that.

It's a great live song, and fun to rock out too and sing...don't sweat over-analyzing it.

Haha, except I made a foolish typo with the word "too". I'm in school again, this is unacceptable!

Back on the whole Fixer subject...I'm going to throw out an opinion of mine that I think I might get some heated responses on but, whatever.

I've got a feeling that Backspacer will include a couple of songs that will have a total acoustic, pick-pattern, Into The Wild feel. One song like that, I wouldn't mind...but anymore than that kinda bothers me and here is why:

Backspacer is PJ album, so it would be well worth a full collaboration of Mike, Matt, Jeff, Stone and Ed. If Ed is writing more and more of his style of songs, he should just put out another solo album. It would be adored by all the Eddie obsessers and it may give him the freedom to do WHATEVER he pleases. Plus after Into The Wild, I think a lot of people have been very hungry for more Vedder style music. All I'm saying is that it would just bum me out a little to see that take up space on a PJ album....but hey, my opinion is only important to myself.

Just my thoughts. That being said, I think ITW was great and I'm not bashing on it.
