After reading only the first sentence of your post...I can honestly say you have lost it. I didn’t bother to read the whole post with any of your arguments. I just read the first snippet and I easily made the assessment that the post was going to suck and you are wrong. :D

    LOL!! i like it :-)

I'm all for the OP saying whatever he wants--he's just got to know that there's gonna be some backlash.

  • To each their own....

I myself (as everyone knows) am not a fan of the last 2 albums. I havent listened to either of them for a long long time. The music on those albums just doesnt do a damn thing for me.

And after the Chicago shows I also came to the conclusion....

That the last 2 albums dont really do a damn thing for the band either....

What did they play.....ONE Riot Act song????

    One or 2 Avocado songs????

That makes a Big Bold Beautiful statement as far as what the band thinks of those albums.....Right???
Actually they played 6 songs from Riot Act and Avocado over the two nights.. Given they now have nine albums to choose from, thats not that bad. 8-)

Up until/and including the Chicago Shows.....

At that point of The TOUR.....

    Songs played...

    TEN.....36
    VS.....29
    Vitalogy....26
    Avocado....21

RIOT ACT????? 7....thats right 7 times the entire tour they played a song off riot act......

    All that tells me is....

The band thinks riot act sucks monkey balls too.......hehehehehehehe

  • From what I have heard of the new album it sounds awesome! Can't wait to hear it in its entirety. There is always going to be people on here bitching about something. They can't please everyone. I personally also like Riot Act and self-titled...don't what all the fuss is about those 2 albums either.

I'm doing my best to not even pass judgment on the FULL songs we've heard - let alone snippets - until I hear it all ebb and flow from beginning to end of Backspacer. Based on the snippets, my theory is that this album will be more mellow than previous albums, and many will throw terms like 'washed up' and 'done' around. Thankfully, what others will inevitably say about this album cannot and will not sway me from my beliefs - be them positive or negative.

you've obviously listened to a lot of Fugazi. Brilliant commentary there.
  • Even if the new album is a duffer, it doesn't mean PJ have lost it! All great bands who last for a while make at least 1 poor album - Stones, Who, Weezer, Lennon, Metallica etc. I've only heard the single and Got Some live and I'm avoiding snippets, youtube, downloads etc and awaiting the new album with relish.

What the hell is Weezer doing on this list?

at the same time, to each his own right, if that's how the guy feels that is how he feels and he is entitled to it and not only is he entitled to it but as a paying 10c member he is entitled to come here and express how he feels about it in a thread he thinks anyone gives a shit about.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. That pretty much goes without saying.

The fact of the matter is the OP is passing judgment on an album/record/work of art/whatever you want to call it that ISN'T EVEN OUT YET. At this point, it's total speculation...which is why it strikes me as ridiculous for someone to assume it's going to be garbage, etc. At least listen to it a few times from beginning to end before you make that call.

Imagine if music critics reviewed albums by only listening to "snippets" of songs...it wouldn't be valid whatsoever.

I sort of have to agree. They have seemed to be taking steps back creatively over the last few years...but I guess every artist does after this long.

I´m not going to judge the album after hearing snippets

I´m not too worried....A "bad" PJ album will still sound better than a great album by any other band... :D

Whoa no need to get all defensive champ, if he is so narrow minded to judge the album based on snippets of songs what do you care?

I love how the OP says that as if Riot Act was some amazing experimental achievement.

And I can already tell that the new album is going to be better as well.

Seems to me like the Avocado lovers are going to love Backspacer while the Avocado haters won't. I loved Avocado and what I've heard of Backspacer so far, so...

not sure that I agree with you there. Avocado was about half political and fairly aggressive (although not as much as it was made out to be).

This record sounds quite different from that from what I've heard.

I liked where the band went with Avocado. I don't think I like where they've gone here, but like all of these posts state, that could likely change once I've actually heard the album ;)
  • While Riot Act is a VERY political album it does have worthy songs that could be played more.

LBC, Save You, I am Mine, GD, You Are (incredible live song).

But with the Backspace due I believe we'll see even less of Riot Act and Binaural. Which is a same, but they can only fit so many songs into a show.

Riot Act is a great Album which I just listen to 2 within 24 hours.
  • Let's not forget the time in which these last 2 albums were released 2003-2007.

THE BUSH YEARS, the worst President ever and the biggest misuse of power by a President in quite awhile.

Those records were needed and I love them for that reason, we needed it.

    Want a GREAT CD???

LET ED WRITE ALL THE SONGS AGAIN!!!!

This decline began slowly along time ago when Ed agreed to let the rest of the band get in on the song writing. If he hadn't, they probably would have broken up. Now, there are some great songs written by other band members for sure, but their very best are written by Ed.

Here's what really needs to happen... Ed needs to go off and do something like Tool's Maynard did with "A Perfect Circle"... Cut a record with a new crew and get your mo'jo back... Then return to PJ and write an EPIC album.

    That's my take...

I can honestly say that Pearl Jam have lost it. When I listen to these snippets, I hear aging, washed up, tired music that just tries too hard but ends up being stale. It really pains me to say that but it's true. What happened to the energy, the spirit? Where's the creative spark, so evident on all Pearl Jam albums up until Avocado?? It just really saddens me to see such a decline in their music. I can't imagine how this could be considered growth or any type of positive step forward musically, at all.

Maybe it's just too poppy, too bland, too predictable, or too simple for me but knowing what they've done before, they definitely could have done better with Backspacer. Look at Fugazi. Every album they did was a real progression of their sound, each one being different, and better, from the last, never recycled or forced. Pearl Jam had something similar going up until Avocado, then the quality just took a giant dive and the lyrics took a hit as well.

I'm still a fan of the band and everything (well, I guess of what they used to be)...just seems like they're not trying anymore, which is disappointing.

    All this from snippets?
Funny you mention lyrics, jeff says in the promo video he feels theres no better lyrics out there...
Its quite easy to forget this is a forum for PJ fans...all i read nowadays is negativity...
I cant wait for the album....THE WHOLE ALBUM

It would be different if the previews were 15 second clips (ala World Wide Suicide) but these are 30-59 seconds, which seem to be pretty good "snapshots" of the songs.

Of course Jeff is going to say there's no better lyrics out there, he's trying to sell a record!

I'm not saying that any of you are wrong for liking it, I'm just pointing out (from a musicians point of view) that it sounds weak and almost lifeless compared to what they've done in the past.

I'm not expecting them to make another Vitalogy or Yield at all, I just think they should have put some actual effort into making this album. The same could have been said for Avocado. It seems from that point, they completely started over in terms of musical progression (which was a bad idea) and Backspacer is a further "progression" of that, which is unfortunate. They could have done some cool things after Riot Act.

I don't see how any of you could say that the lyrics haven't declined. Take "The Fixer", for example and compare it to "Can't Keep" which is a great song both lyrically and musically. BIG drop off in quality.

THIS has gotta be the dumbest POST EVER on HERE. dear god what a clueless fuck your are.

Fugazi is an American post-hardcore and punk rock band, that formed in Washington, D.C. in 1987. The band's continual members were guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty. Fugazi are noted for their DIY ethical stance and manner of business practice. Fugazi has been on hiatus since 2002.

Fugazi's music was an intentional departure from that of the hardcore punk bands the members had played in previously. Fugazi incorporated funk and reggae beats, irregular stop-start song structures, and heavy riffs inspired by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Queen, bands that the punk community largely disdained.[11] Picciotto became the group's second guitarist when he realized MacKaye's typically chunky, low-end riffs and Lally's dub-influenced basslines allowed him to focus on high-pitched parts. In both vocal and guitar roles, Picciotto assumed the role of a foil to MacKaye; employing a Rickenbacker guitar for its scratchy single-coil sound in order to "cut through MacKaye's chunky chording like a laser beam."[7] Picciotto's assumption of guitar duties allowed all four members of the band to jam together and write songs that way, where previously they had played songs largely as MacKaye had arranged them.[12] When writing songs, the band often rearranges them with different structures and different singers.[9]
