After listening to the Backspacer previews....

I can honestly say that Pearl Jam have lost it. When I listen to these snippets, I hear aging, washed up, tired music that just tries too hard but ends up being stale. It really pains me to say that but it's true. What happened to the energy, the spirit? Where's the creative spark, so evident on all Pearl Jam albums up until Avocado?? It just really saddens me to see such a decline in their music. I can't imagine how this could be considered growth or any type of positive step forward musically, at all.

Maybe it's just too poppy, too bland, too predictable, or too simple for me but knowing what they've done before, they definitely could have done better with Backspacer. Look at Fugazi. Every album they did was a real progression of their sound, each one being different, and better, from the last, never recycled or forced. Pearl Jam had something similar going up until Avocado, then the quality just took a giant dive and the lyrics took a hit as well.

I'm still a fan of the band and everything (well, I guess of what they used to be)...just seems like they're not trying anymore, which is disappointing.

I knew there would be posts like this. Not everyone is going to like this album. It doesn't matter what PJ come up, there will always be this sort of negativity.

I cannot agree to that! After listening to The Fixer and Got Some about 20 times I have to say that they sound great!!

...and they play the video in Austrian Television every day!!! I love it!!

    Original post = Bullshit!!!

  • Even if the new album is a duffer, it doesn't mean PJ have lost it! All great bands who last for a while make at least 1 poor album - Stones, Who, Weezer, Lennon, Metallica etc. I've only heard the single and Got Some live and I'm avoiding snippets, youtube, downloads etc and awaiting the new album with relish.

After reading only the first sentence of your post...I can honestly say you have lost it. I didn’t bother to read the whole post with any of your arguments. I just read the first snippet and I easily made the assessment that the post was going to suck and you are wrong. :D
  • I do remember people saying the same thing about No Code....which is one of the best albums in HISTORY!

Hey guess what.. THEY ARE AGING! Can't go backwards.

People have been saying this every album since Vs was released.

These are 30 second clips, man.. Someone here needs to get laid.

Personally, I've never been more excited about 30 second clips. They haven't had this much energy since Yield.

If I had a dollar for everyone who heard a new Pearl Jam song and thought it sucked, but came back a few weeks later and thought it was ok, and then came back a few years later and thought it was a classic, I'd be pretty damn rich.

Agreed they have the right...but, I just don't get the trash on this site. It is a FAN site. I come here to read live reviews, get ADHD about the new album, etc. etc. The fact that people come here to complain boggles me.

Well I guess not everyone is gonna be happy with this album, I definitely see progression, I dont want them stuck trying to produce more albums like No Code, or Yield, those were great then and still are, but its 9, 11, 13 years later, and the sound must change and grow together with the band, IMO I think that's what they've done, everyone will have their own opinion on this album, some good some bad, I just wish they'd at least wait for the album to come out rather than judging the songs based on 30 second clips :?

    I can't wait for this album!! :D

I agree, it seems that over the past few days writing a bad review gets you some kind of insult from another board member :?

I think this album is gonna be great, I love what I've heard so far, but I don't expect for everyone to feel the same way.

  • To each their own....

I myself (as everyone knows) am not a fan of the last 2 albums. I havent listened to either of them for a long long time. The music on those albums just doesnt do a damn thing for me.

And after the Chicago shows I also came to the conclusion....

That the last 2 albums dont really do a damn thing for the band either....

What did they play.....ONE Riot Act song????

    One or 2 Avocado songs????

That makes a Big Bold Beautiful statement as far as what the band thinks of those albums.....Right???
    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
  • Good...give me your tenclub number and any other stuff that you want to give up. This album is going to be very good...their sound is progressing and I'll be along for the ride until their done!

Actually they played 6 songs from Riot Act and Avocado over the two nights.. Given they now have nine albums to choose from, thats not that bad. 8-)
